What is the thing that prevents creative growth, intelligent discussion and just a general apathy for future evolution in any kind've medium? Yes, that's right, rabid fanboism.

Not only does it inhibit all the points listed above, it also means that the god awful publishers like EA and SOE can do whatever the hell they like, as they know that enough people will buy the game no matter the circumstances. This breeds laziness in developers, and a lack of need for revolution of the genre will lead to a stagnation of it.

We've seen it already, but it seems that this period is STARTING to be over, as we can see from certain games developers making ridiculously unfavourable decisions in an attempt to grab a bit more money before the game shuts down. Maybe, just maybe, we'll see a return to UO-esque gamestyle, but only time will tell.

IF the games that don't deserve to survive, do so, we'll see the genre slowly stagnate and a distinct lack of ideas entered into the genre.

( You know what the funniest thing about this genre is? The fact that the developers could get hundreds and hundreds of wonderful ideas from MUDs or roguelikes, but are too stupid or lazy to do so. )

Your right, however eventually people will only settle for better experiances.  When was the last time a crappy RTS sold a huge number of copies post launch?  When was the last time a crappy FPS sold out at the shops?  I can't think of any and its a good indication of what time does to a genre.  While there are still crappy RTS's and FPS, many people expect more from the genre and the devs have had to deliver.

The MMO genre is still young and needs more time before the devs start churning out the quality products because the market is filled with crappy games that fill all the gaps we currently have.

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

It's silly, saying something mildly negative, even touching on something that -might- be wrong with the game or -might- use improvement gets shot down.

"Hello, I think area X could use some better quests...."

"GO BACK TO WoW IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT1111"

Sigh....this is ridiculous on fan forums. I kinda like the general forum because no one goes ballistic on you here with a few exceptions.

People keep buying from the same companies and leave the game a day later and then complain. Will keep happening. Bit sad.

Everyone is a fanboi.  Your either a fanboi of a game, a fanboi of hating the game, or a fanboi of making fun of the supposed fanbois.

It's not that simple.

People are genuinly scared that their MMO will fail and will do anything to make sure it doesn't since they are ready to put a lot of time (or already have) in the game and don't want it destroyed. Even if the game is bad.

As long as there are people (and I use the term loosely) who flame and bash games with insults and demands, there will be plenty of folks to balance it out with over-protective and exagerated defense.  I honestly don't think either is more damaging to the industry than the other.

Yeah, it's a subtle one; if you post on forums you're a fanboi.

Do you know why the disgruntled masses have such a rabid hatred of "fanboism" .. ?

Forums are largely a haven of the miserable; home to those vocal minorities that the genre has left behind. You'll find them all here; the sandbox, FFA PvP, hardcore goons who all seem to share the laughable belief that whining on forums will reverse the course that the genre is heading in and bring back what they consider the golden age of MMOgaming.

Fanbois make them nervous; if there are people out there who are happily playing MMOGs then that threatens their world view that the entire genre is in the crapper. It's just so much more comforting to closet themselves away on a forum amongst other disgruntled ex-MMO players and delude themselves into thinking that they are actually the majority.

Bastioni, is obvious that you are a WoW player.    Tell me it, If I am wrong.

In my experience, wen a guy say what you comment, about 66% of the ocassions is the right reply, since the other guy is asking why something don't work like wow.

You're wrong,I used to play Everquest and now Guild Wars, which makes it even more fun for me when I mention something about a game and people immediatly think I play WoW and am out to "destroy" their game.

"Go back to WoW"..is what everyone gets who suggests something nowadays. It's not just me, every game forum which is competing with WoW is like this now.

I don't even play WoW but constantly people tell other people "go back to WoW", like it's some kind of 'cool' insult or something.

I must say that the general forum here is nice though, it's not like this here (except for game specific sections), but on fan forums everyone does it.

Yes, because a game isn't good unless every single feature is completely different than anything even remotely resembling the way it works in WoW, which is more popular than any 3 MMO's out there, combined.

Absolutely agree, developers sorround themselves in a cloud of fanbots that make them believe everything is OH SO GREAT, then when they face the reality they hit a brick wall. Simply put, the MMO industry in general is behaving in a very stupid way.

I don't think that fanbots make anyone nervous. What they do though is create a hostile environment on a medium used to share opinions and hold discussions.

See the biggest problem is that they jump down the throat of anyone who dares to even slightly hint at anything negative about their 'worshiped' game. This happens on the other (hater) side of the fence as well.

I have no problems with people hating or loving the game. What I do have a problem with is people insulting others for having different opinions.

Your contention is that people with positive outlooks are the hostile element?

Talk about living in a fantasy world; it's like an MMO of the mind and you're the only one playing.

Fanbois insult haters, haters insult fanbois. That's just the way it is.

Both parties are to blame, but villainising the fanbois is especially stupid since we're so massively outnumbered by the haters.

"fanboys" don't -just- lash out at others, they have a motivation most of the time.

Many seem to be ex-WoW players who have some sort of score to settle with WoW and can't seem to get over the fact that the game is still running.

The responses aren't just defending their product, most are generic anti-WoW bannering, completely unrelated to the game in question.
