Three things cannot be long hidden, the sun, the moon, and the truth. |

Not at all. However, I'd do anything for a Wasteland-style MMO (or Fallout perhaps)...so maybe I'll look at Fallen Earth or something. But, really, I like medieval fantasty-type settings. I'd not mind a different take on things instead of the usual small evolution on Tolkien's bad guys and all, but still don't mind the general settings themselves. My favourite fantasy setting to date is still the original Asheron's Call. Ningen wa, ningen da. |

Not tired of Medieval Fanatsy MMOs. Give me more power crystals anytime. And as long as I can play an human, elf or something in between, I am good to go. |

Medieval Fantasy? I'm a bit tired of the old tolkien based fantasy lore around, but a good game overall can make me forget how the MMORPG lacks originality for that part.
Now about medieval, is there a noticeable medieval MMO out there now? Medieval to me is just like Mount & Blade did, even not being MMO, it was inspired in the Middle Ages, without magic, monsters or any races rather than humans, equipment does not make your character godlike and so on. |

Tired of fantasy games in general. I would love to see a good sandbox medieval game. Along the lines of Roma Victor... just not based around ROME. Although that is a good concept and totally different...
I would also love to see a sci-fi game set in a completely different setting.... space is great, ships are great, but what about a sci-fi underwater MMO? Or one that doesnt envolve anything close to a human in it?
Perhaps bring back some classic stand alone games into a MMO style game... XCOM UFO Defence Online..... that would be different and cool. Or perhaps god forbid EA, gives up its rights to Multiplayer Battletech (MPBT) and lets someone actually produce that into a MMO. How about a Wild West MMO, or even a Roaring 20s MMO.
There is so much more than the oh so tired fantasy elves and magic worlds out there. So much crap, so little quality. |

Something new would be nice. Where the f**** is white wolf? Good lord. And we need a virtual world MMO, stephenson snow crash, or Tron I don't care just pick one. We need a spy MMO, if agency doesn't work out someone else make one. A pirate MMO. I know its been tried a few times, try again.

I am a fan of science-fiction. But I am not tired of medieval fantasy. I am tired of generic fantasy, medieval or sci-fi. Too much artist draw generic fantasy. Only a few games have done a step outside the common cliches. Vanguard did, with the tiger-people, and somewhat with the wold (dog?) people. Everything in morrowind whas original. AION has some originality, but most things are generic. Almost all games are a bunch of the same 3 cliches, and this is boring. Go read good science-ficiton / fantasy literature, there are zillions of settings to explore. And If you have zero imagination. Get flash gordon, a medieval venus (mars?) with dinosaurs. Get some really cool (and not generic) steampunk: 1880 Space. Or a "Aliens" mmo, where you can play a alien drone, and infect people.
I know generic work better (hence: Oblivium more popular than Morrowind) so any game that give a alien setting has to give a giganteous "generic" area for these people, but something original has to given, to let people feel in a different world.

I am quite amused so many people in this thread assume that mediveal times had elves, dwarves, magic, and dragons.

Originally posted by Adamantine You are wrong here. We are talking about a setting we nickname "medieval", has nothing to do with something real. The "fantasy medieval" *crap* is really old. The Quixote was written to mock then!. That was 1607, for you.

I don't want to live in the past, I want the future. The past is boring, whether or not you include fantasy elements or not. I no more want to play medieval games than I want to play games about the Civil War or WWII. Been there, done that. Try something new and original. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

I only like medieval fantasy when come to (mmo)rpg games.
It is past but is a fantasy past wich never hapened , is just in our imaginations so is nothing similar with WW2 wich i dont like as a theme in a game personaly. |

I'm not at all tired of fantasy. In fact, games that aren't fantasy rarely get more than a passing glance from me. Although I did play Eve for a few months, it was the only exception. Gimme elves.....lotsa elves! lol, the more the better! |

But most fantasy MMOs are just thinly-veiled ripoffs of Tolkein anyhow, if you've read Tolkein, everything feels really familiar no matter what think veneer you put over it. It's not that much different to have a different take on WWII (which I agree, is a boring theme for a game IMO) or to have a different take on LOTR and all the generic fantasy novels that have come after, trying to copy his formula and his success. Give me something actually original. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

Yeah brilliant. We've had ratmen, catmen, wolfmen, lizardmen and various other forms of wildlife stuffed into a humanoid body. Lets just do the rounds and work our way through the complete list. Why bother being original. Its even worse when its sci-fi games because the "aliens" tend to get based on animals that come from planet Earth which never makes much sense. What difference would it make anyway? Mantis, spider, ant, worm, centipede, duck, shrew, seagull or badger. They all play pretty much the same way. You will still be equipping the same plate armour as everyone else and whacking each other with the same weapons. |

6 pages and I'm surprised to see no one mention this. The ultimate setting for a sandbox game, including player run economy, politics, religion, etc. would be a low fantasy in the style of A Song of Ice and Fire. Whatcha think?
