I am very concerned about this from the E3 Q&A:

Q: What influence have games like World of WarCraft have on the development of FFXIV?
A: As with WoW, we want to aim a bit for the casual user. However, we don't want to make a copy of WoW. We believe we will have things that are unique and will stand out from that game.

From my persective FFXI was very rewarding because it was not dumbed down. So I guess I am asking:

Do you want FFXIV to be aimed at the casual user the same way that WoW is?

Yes
No

Personally I'd like the idea of being about to jump in an out of the game quickly. As FFXI is right now you honestly can't jump on for a half hour if that is all you have time for (and I think they can lose player base with that fact). Truly you need 2-3 hours minimum you can sit down and play FFXI for a full filling experience. I also hate the fact that you need to be married to the game in order to play endgame. There have been linkshell I have been kicked out of because I wasn't camping a king at noon or at 4 am. Not very cool when you consider I work.

I like how they said "aim A BIT for the casual user.", all of the wannabe "hardcore" gamers have to overreact and immediately start with the whining and crying.  You'd think they'd be "hardcore" enough to hold back on the tears a bit, wouldn't you?

The fact is, the majority of us have lives, and we can't sit down and dedicate 4 hours a night to a stupid game.

Since you can log in and do your thing for 30 min and log out, giving nothing to the world of the game as a whole.

I dont see how you think WoW is not a game for the cassual player. Does it have content for hardcore players? Well it depends what u call Hardcore. It does have end game but not nearly as hardcore as FFXI.

They don't just want to make a game for the 500k playing F11, they want to make a game to capture a wider audience.

Making another F11 would not help them in pursuit of that goal, and it would only serve to please FF11 fans. So it probably will be "dumbed down", whatever that exactly entails in your book, seeing as you don't say.

As for that answer, pretty sure most WoW clones said the same thing, "we won't be the same, we will be different in XYZ ways".

I guess you'd have to be "hardcore" to put up with time consuming end game like in FF11.

Besides, most end game fights boil down to zerg, tank and spank, or kite in FF11...what a challenge those are.

You know there was statistic, only 8% of the entire playerbase of WoW had done Black Temple back during Burning Crusade, so there must be something "hardcore" about it.

I think (hope) I may be reading to much into it also. But I want to know now. And voice my opinion now. now now now!, lol.

I just dont want to spend 1 to 2 years getting hyped over a game that doesnt meet my expectations. If its not going to be as challenging as FFXI then I just want to go quietly on my way, now. But I really really hope that it is.

Very true, but it does say "a bit". I am just hoping that "a bit" means an average of 50-75 days to max level. Not 7 days.

Well the quote makes it sound like SE instantly equated it with casual. Are they wrong?

I just wrote about this in my latest blog entry, and I am getting flamed there for it.

I think the beauty of FFXI was the challenge of the game.   It did not treat you with kid gloves the same way WoW does.  A high level accomplished character in FFXI was always a good player at his class, and most of the bad players didn't make it past the dunes, let alone Maat.  In WoW it was so easy to level up that even a moron was able to reach the higher tiers of the game.

By the same token, it wouldn't make much sense for them to make another MMO that would directly compete against FFXI.  This makes me think they will be going more for the WoW crowd.  I think Mythic saw that releasing 2 MMOs that have the same exact target audience does not make for good financial sense.

Good point. I didnt want to inject too much into the poll post. I just wanted people to have a chance to answer the question based on exactly what was said. Dumbed down to me means lots of things. Its basically making anything easier. The main thing I usually look at is time to max level, just for a quick reference on how rewarding a game will be for me.

I am hoping that they are creative enough to capture a wider audience without taking too much challenge away from the game.

I'll keep this to the point :D

Challenge does not equal time sink. Accessibility does not equal dumbed down.

Pointless time sinks are a thing of the past, EQ and Ryzom are that way>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It's not because something is accessible that you are forced to use those options, like teleports.

We still don't have a clear idea of the character progression system we know it's not level based. So I think it may be a good idea to forget what we know about FFXI and WoW in terms of leveling and just wait and see.

You say you don't want to waste your time being hyped for a game for a year or 2, I'm sorry but that's not a guarantee you ever get when you wait for a game's release. It's always a bet and right now we just don't have enough info to give concrete answers. It's your choice if you want to hang out until we know more or go do something else for a while. :P

I am going to say yes, because when I played FFXI (it was during high school) I had all the free time in the world to sit there for hours. Its not like that anymore. I have a job, university, etc etc. So, I would like to be able to log on during the day (when there are no big events planned) and be able to get at least a little bit done. Of course, I would like some elements to take a decent amount of time, which is why they could be planned in advance.

This is the sole reason I'm playing WoW right now over FFXI. I'd be playing FFXI if I could, though. Dammit life, always getting in the way.

Even though the it doesnt matter at this point since the game is almost done, but i dont want it to be the main focus. Im sure the casual gamer isnt the main focus of this game either, but it might be a big chunk still, and im ok with that.
