While this is still a rumor, The Cut Scene is reporting that sources are telling them that Cryptic Studios is developing a new MMOG based on the Neverwinter Nights IP.

I can see it now...This game plagued with "good" dark elves called "Drizit, Drizzit, Drizzd, Druzzt, Drazzt, Drisd...etc etc etc" all holding two sabers

I would love to see Neverwinter Nights On Line. I was really upset when BIO didn't get D&D online. I believe that Bioware as whole would be a very successful online game company. I am sure that SWTOR is going to do well.

Cryptic Studios? As in Champions Online and Star Trek Online? If true, it's going to be a very, very long wait.

Then there is their "Unnamed MMO" getting cancelled/delayed yet again. And just who is bank rolling all this. Atari does not have a lot of money, according to reports I'm seeing. It's even mentioned in the article linked.

Another thing to look at is Champions will be poaching CoH players, Star Trek is going to poach Star Wars players(generic sci-fi players actually*), and now NWN is going to try to poach DDO players?

If true, some body is making some very bad decisions.

*Even if Star Trek could get SW fans from Galaxies, they will never get them from (or loose them to) SW:TOR.

Well cryptic does have a brand new engine that alows for fast develpment of new games.
It would only cost them a year, at most two to make it. They got all the basic resorces and knowlidge needed.

It would also be a smart move, CO aply's to ex-cox and modern theme players,  Startrek will aply to sci-fi fans  ( not the sw fans, those usaly dislike ST and would rather play CO ) and the a fantasy game to cover all mayor markets.

Drop in a 3 for 1 monthly prize and you have the same as blizzard has , One engine, million(s) of players.

There is no doubt in my mind that all those games would atleast get a stable 350k sub/piece.
Thats the power of  building your own engine.

All said, I doubt cryptic is making it, They would simply say so.  deu to there posible fast develp time they need to hype it sooner then when building a new Engine for it.
Whit the current financial market and the open cost of there curent engine its not likely why would already be making a new one.

Bioware no longer wants to work with the D&D IP. It was far too restrictive for them in what they were allowed to do story wise (No real evil paths ect.), which was why they stopped making NWN and let Obsidian Entertainment do it instead.

To "combat" the D&D Franchise they created the DragonAge universe from the bottom up, and if I read it correctly then their dice system is ment to be used by computers, not people so it's not a hazzle to createa MMOG.

And personally I think that after SW:TOR is released we could very likely see a DragonAge MMO in the works if it is not already. It's shaping up to be an IP we can identify with and will be well known from Q4 onwards.

IF...this is true

and

IF...they are using 3.0 or 3.5 rulesets

and

IF...it is a wide open world to explore and not made like DDO

then

I'll give it a play. The last thing they need to do, in my opinion, is get cutesy and "innovative" with it. D&D by itself is a time tested winner, though 4.0 from what I have read isn't doing so well, which doesn't surprise me. Second Edition and 3.x did do well, and there's no real point in changing it up for the sake of change. We don't need an ambitious head honcho on this looking to innovate and "make a name" for himself/herself. Just someone with enough smarts to know everything needed to make the the meal is already in the fridge. You just have to cook it.

Unless they are developing 4 MMOs concurrently, then this is a lie.

I know what their 3rd project is, and it isnt this :(

I am probably sounding like a "pessimist," but NWN 2 was the BIGGEST disappointment in my gaming LIFE; and I have been buying, and playing, and reading about and exploring games for a very (very) long time.

I am sorry.  No.  I am not sorry.  What is there to draw ME in?  More story? Another MMORPG?  NWN 1 was excellent because of player-tools to DEVELOP their own worlds, stories, NPCs, dungeons, and so forth.

We need more intuitive and user-friendly TOOLS - not another MMORPG.

I'd be excited if it was Bioware, heck I might even be excited if it was Obsidian, but Cryptic? O.o

Paint me skeptical. Not saying their games aren't very good, but I'm having a hard time picturing Cryptic writing a story matching up to Bioware's NWN or even anything strictly fantasy and epic... :/

They could pull in writers from Wizards for help. The bonus thing is that FR has plenty of lore already written. Well, the pre 4.0 anyway.

Personally, I'm not really a "follow the sotry" type player, which is another reason the Bioware "story, story, story" mantra for TOR doesn't interest me. If Crytpic can give visual representation to the FR, put in all the people, places and conflict that is in FR, and just let me roam the world, doing quests and exploring the world, I'd be happy. Let me buy a small home in a large city, small hamlet or in pre-determines areas out in the world, all the better.

I like NWN2 I'd love to see it as a F2P. I hope it won't take as long as Baldurs Gate 3. Sigh! Bet WOC killed that too.

If this is true, and done right it could be amazing.  I would hope they keep the user-created content aspect that the other NWNs have.  Player-created dungeons, quests, etc.   Having a true sandbox-style world which D&D deserves would be great too.  It would be difficult to pull off though.

Please don't tease me like this. I've been waiting for a real D&D MMO, since I started playing EQ in 2000.

NWN was fun way back but I agree with NWN2 being a big dissapointment. The game is painful to play as I get sick and tired of having to endlessly open chests every few feet... also the railroading doesnt help its cause either.

As for the D&D comments, I've play tested 4.0 for the past couple weeks. Its fantastic at what it was meant to do. It really works well with counters/miniatures. In fact it is designed specifically with that in mind. Personally I think it crushes 3.0 and 3.5 wich I thought were horrible for the most part. The 4.0 rule set is really rock solid, brilliant game design. Those interested in game design would do well to play it as it borrows directly from mmorpgs in many respects.

I bet it brings in a lot of new players over time.

wow am i one of the only people who liked NWN2? The story was extremely captivating, and the game itself i thought was immersive. The first time i got it, i played it for a week straight, getting up playing, eating, sleeping, and getting up to play again it was so addictive. I wasnt a big fan of NWN1 though. I got tired of the "exit from the gate to the west, east ,north, south" .... for the 5th time.... It stopped being immersive, and got repetetive.

As for NWN online, i'm not getting my hopes up. It would take a great visionary studio to turn the NWN world into something great, and worthy of the franchise, and i dont think cryptic is that studio. As far as i know, the only experience they have is with COH/COV. And i didnt really like that, or the look of Champions online. Also the fact that they are developing 3-4 MMORPGs at the same time, makes me think that the release date would probably be after 2020.

Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online
Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2

I thought it was confirmed yesterday- 6/9/09

Anyways, this is awesome news for me.  I played a ton of never winter nights.  It eventually led to my interest in mmorpgs.  Neverwinter nights was a very impressive game with an even more impressive modding community.  Another mmo on my list to look forward to.

Sorry, but the last thing we need is another fantasy MMO. When will the market reach saturation? They are gonna kill this genre thru sheer greed. Ah well, so is the way of the world.

My hope is in all the new sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, horror, etc...MMO's in development. At this point there isn't a single fantasy IP that would get me interested.
