I havn't seen a game on the market which would ever challenge WoW's population, that was untill now. I belive that SWTOR will be the next big game 2010. To be honest it's about time somethik epic should be developed. Iv'e been let down with AoC , WaR & TR let's hope that SWTOR won't go down the same road. |

So Jimmy... You've been let down by WAR, AoC, and TR and now you are predicting TOR will be the next big thing? Forgive me if I don't put $50 on TOR, you don't have a real good history of picking winners.

People said the same exact thing about Dark and Light, Darkfall, AoC, WAR, and a host of other games... yeah... You are wrong. |

2010? think more like 2013-15, and it's only if you're an optimist |

Actually he's not wrong in principle. All the games mentioned had the potential to become great hits (apart from Darkfall, who in his right mind would expect it to have the universal acceptance of WoW). None of them managed to realise that potential, due to various reasons. Here comes yet another game with good potential to become a majorly accepted title. Until however the potential is actually realised, it's dangerous to speculate. If nothing else, you prepare yourself for a disappointment by overhyping this game. So we yet again have another threat comparing a non-released game with WoW. I wonder when people will get bored of these threads. They seem to keep popping each time a game is getting close to beta phase and sometimes (like now) much earlier. |

Unfortunately, I know exactly what is going to kill WoW.
A meteor, or nuclear exchange, or a polar shift, or the second coming (or third or seventh) of someone's messiah.
I would have added alien invasion but I have a sneaking suspicion that the invading aliens would become horribly addicted to WoW. I'm not especially certain said messiah wouldn't.
WoW is like rabies, it'll never just....go away. But maybe if we trapped and humanely euthanized enough WoW addicts, we could bring the scourge to a managable level. To beat Blizzard, you have to understand Blizzard, and even the folks making GuildWars (who came from Blizzard) have not been able to repeat the magic. Hopefully at BlizzCon in August we'll find out more of their new MMOG. Unfortunately, SW:TOR will always have SW:G baggage to deal with because after all, LucasArts is involved in both. Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware "Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product." |

I myself am waiting patiently for this game to come out, don't care when they decide to release it as long as they make sure it's polished nicely with no bugs. Although playing Voyage Century Online for 2 years off and on a person can get use to the bugs lol. |

To beat Blizzard you have to understand Blizzard. That's a good one. And I thought it was their multimilion marketing campaign, but obviously not. REALITY CHECK |

I didn't miss it, I left it out intentionally. For one thing, it is unlikely that blizzard would shoot themselves in the foot and damage their golden egg laying retarded child. Aside from that, I'm fairly certain that even blizzard couldn't make a WoW killer. Wow was a child of timing and opportunity. All blizzard did was manage to ride the lightning long enough to keep the game from burning out immediately. Wow is pretty much just a big carnival game, throw something at something else and you win a shiny whatnot. Now all they have to do is make sure there is an ample supply of shiny whatnots.

Hehe, but seriously now, there IS a new Daddy in town, and it's called Aion. With it's 3,5 million subscribers and only released in march, it is the fastest growing mmorpg ever and while Lineage and Lineage II lost subs because of Aion, I am sure WoW will too. So look no further for your WoW killer, if it's not Aion ( even if it is only in Asia ), then we will have to wait a looong time before someone else gets a shot at it. And no, lol, it won't be SWTOR :p

I'd say Aion has a chance to dethrone WoW, it has gotten 3,5 million subs in 3 months and Lineage I + II only lost like 500k subs together, so I am guessing there are also alot of subs comming from WoW and other mmorpg's, and some new players too ofc. It took WoW a year or something to get those numbers.

Either way, Blizzard will release a new mmorpg, and I am guessing it will be a sandbox sci-fi one, this way they can cover the whole mmorpg market :p But I am sure alot of WoW players will play this game, even if it is sandbox and sci-fi, because the Blizzard name on it will be too hard to resist. So together with Aion, the new Blizzard mmo will surely dethrone WoW.

I seriously doubt we are going to see a big budget sandbox MMO in the next 10 years. |

I guess you are still peddling that same worn out theory that other developers are just not smart enough to spend money on advertising, because after all it guarantees absolute 100% success. Games don't need to be good, all they need is marketing and it is undeniable that they will get millions of players to subscriber for years and years. Look how awesome that turned out for Age of Conan and Warhammer.
It is just a shame that so many mmo companies don't have the braintrust that is your special insight fueling their development efforts. If they only knew the key to success was marketing... As the guiness guys say "BRILLIANT!"

Of course it might, it will take a WOW -like game to dethrone WOW, AION has a good chance.
But SWTOR, no, the fanbase is smaller than people realize, especially among the younger folks
