Its sounding more and more like Sony paid Square-Enix a buttload of money so they can announce it on their system at E3, but it'll more than likely get a 360 release at launch as well or within 6 months after!  Either way I don't care as I'll be playing it on PC as that is the true MMO gamers machine!!!

Nothing wrong with that. Matter of fact, Sony NEEDS a top line game like these Final Fantasy game to help with PS3 sales. I myself own a PS3 and see this as a good thing. This will bring more players to the system I love.

Hmmm... I wonder what SE would say if we brought this to their attention.

More than likely they know and its all part of their plans.  Not much has been revealed or shown yet, and the Square-Enix Press Conference is creeping up really soon!

When is the press conference?  Do you know a good site to get coverage from?

They showed it during the Sony press conference not sure if Suare had one but it all took place at E3 which is over now.

It's funny. Everyone thinks XI is going to die now because of next MMO. I guess EQ is dead because of EQ2 right?

Blah, blah, blah, there is no reason to play XI now and all that garbage. I'll be playing both. I guess the multiple times they kept saying that the next MMO is meant to co-exist with XI meant nothing.

Whatever though, just keep on going with the "there is no reason to go back to XI now". You didn't beat anything. Saying you beat an MMO is like saying you learned all knowledge, there is always something new to learn.

The bad part is I am going to be playing 3. I'll be in FFXI, FFXIV (which I have now dubbed Final Fantasy 11 V) , and SWTOR. The EQ/EQ2 parallel was what I was using in talking to my LS yesterday. Same world, differnt universe, differnt (albeit interchangable) player sets. Then today I find out FF11V is in a different world but meh. I just wonder where this new world is in comparison to Ivalice and Vana'deil (which I am convinced are on the same planet)

EDIT^6: And the Agency still peaked my interest >.>

Just to clarify, SE stated a while ago that this new MMO is not going to kill FFXI (somehow) back when the teaser was launched in 2006 for the game code named Rapture.  They're probably going to do something like make FFXI F2P for those with POL accounts linked with FFXIV or lower the monthly subscription to attract new users.

I'm inclined to think it's not going to kill off FFXI for one key reason:

1. They're developing XIV with a different target audience in mind, specifically the more casual group - a decidedly different one than those playing FFXI.

Even with the changes they've made lately to make the game more "accessible", FFXI is still far from being a "casual MMO".  It's still quite demanding time and effort wise for a large portion of the content. You still need groups for a significant amount of the content as well. It would be a stretch to call FFXI in any way "casual", even in its current state.

In other words, it won't be competing for the same players as FFXI... which is smart on their part, assuming their goal is earn more subscribers overall and not merely shift their current subscribers from one game to another.

So, while I'm sure there will be some overlap between the two (I'll likely play both, if not simultaneously, then at least alternately), there will be people who stick with FFXI, either because they prefer its style of gameplay and/or simply because they're so attached to their characters that they couldn't just "give them up".

There's a somewhat "fringe" contingent I'm noticing who, frankly, need a bit of perspective, to put it mildly.

Just one example: A friend of mine on Vent last night was talking about a friend of his who wants to cancel his FFXI account because he's "tired of MMOs doing this to him.. he spends all his time building up a character only to have it made pointless because a new MMO comes out".

Another person said to me in-game "I've played FFXI since it came out. I can't believe SE is doing this to me'.

It's a strange sort of "victim complex" that I've seen from others about XIV... and, indeed, about other MMOs as well (EQ1 players felt that way about EQ2; AC1 players felt that way about AC2 - some are still bitter to this day about it).

To those people, all I can say is... No one, and nothing is "doing anything to you". It's a company putting out a new title so they can get more customers. In the case of a MMO like FFXI which, even going strong now *is* aging and won't have those numbers forever, SE is smart in creating something new to bring new players in to add to, if not replace, those they may lose over time in FFXI. It's called "smart business". If you don't want to play FFXIV... then don't play it. But FFS... get over yourselves.

Thought I'd mention that in a update FFXIV WILL NOT be using POL for it service.

To be honest I am so glad that they are coming out with this game. I have seen several people say that they hated FFXI. I understand that its not for everyone. But in comparison to the New Gen of games that have been coming out for the last year or so have not even compared to the amount of fun, experience and friends that I have made to FFXI. I have played other MMO's only yearning for the same experience that I had with FFXI. My friends that I made on that game loyal and great people, made the game experience even more fun that previous. I have heard some amazing things about games but FFXI brought people together. Yes FFXi did have its faults gilserrers, whining people and typical issues.... But those were overshadowed by the people I have met. I have every intention on playing this game and I cannot wait. Thank you Square!!!

This is the best news ever. I'll be there fore sure. My question is.. i remember playing FFXI when it was released here in North America. But at that time it had been released for a year in Japan(?) or some Asian country. Is this game and/or will it be released in Asia before here? When it says 2010 i hope they mean north america and not just japan or something.

Plus I was a tarutaru but I didn't see one in the trailer... unless i missed it?? I'll cry if i can't be the cute little things ^^

As far as I remember, in the E3 interview .. the FFIV team has stated that they will go for global release which is awsome :)

Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy?
Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!

I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised by the announcement for FFXIV.  I've been without an MMORPG for almost a year now, and recently I've thought I really wanted to play FFXI again.  I did the 15 day trial only to realize I don't want to play FFXI but I want to play an online final fantasy thats unique and better!

I guess I am getting my wish!  Looking forward to it!  This time I won't have to be impatient and Import the game either :)

No I wont go back.  In my eyes I beat the game, spent years playing, thousands of hours, and my friends are gone and moved on.  We will all meet again in FF14 though.  It will be a glorious day.

ic0n Azumanga Daioh signature ftw.

Best case senario is they will lower the price for FFXI (possibly to a $1 for the content id?) or make it F2P with paid episodic updates (ala Guild Wars). I had to log on last night just to stop people from killing themselves b/c a whole lot of people just came to the realization that everything they did in FFXI was for nothing. Not entirly true, but for a game that it has been their life for 3, 4, 5 years this news came as a gut check.

"ic0n Azumanga Daioh signature ftw." -- and thank you

I reupped to FFXI tonight... Content ID's look to currently be 1.00 each.... I saw 12.95 base with 1 character, 13.95 2 characters, 14.95 3 characters, etc.

I don't know if there will be carry over from FFXI to FFXIV but I don't know that FFXIV will release until after FF XIII, which by the way still has a December 2010 release date... So we could be waiting a long time for FFXIV
