I read somewhere that you will basically have to go into PVP free-for-all areas to level in this game. Meaning gankfest city. I've had one too many bad experiences with free-for-all PVP servers and forced PVP in games, I prefer the option to PVP when/if I feel like, not when/if the game devs say I have to in order to progress a character.
So was this misinformation or is this a forced PVP game? |

You will have to PvP unless you want to level up to 50 grinding mobs in the non-pvp zone aka the zone you should leave at lvl 20 And even then you'll need to PvP in order to gain Abyss Points for decent gear, unless you want to spend millions of gold on gear And even then ... what the point playing a PvP game then? I didn't know it was supposed to be a forced PVP game, hence the quesiton.
But yeah I'll be skipping this one then. Oh well. |

Join or make a guild so you have friends, nothing more satisfying than PK-ing an ass hat with your friends,or comming to the aid of a lower level player being ganked, who knows you could even start a anti-gank guild that hunts gankers or even accepts contracts for killing gankers. IMO the possibilites of killing gankers would give me hours of fun |

You can get to max level without setting foot in the abyss. However since it's a PvPvE game, it's obvious there will be better rewards, better drops, more action, better xp per kill etc., not to mention that it will be much more fun levelling in the abyss, as the players who take more risks are going to be better rewarded. Also you get abyss points as well, higher ranks, better gear. You can switch from PvPvE to other PvE zones whenever you want. In other words you have the option to PvP whenever you feel like it. It's not forced. If you do this however, you will be missing out on like 80% of the game.
This isn't the game for you if you're looking for PvE with a bit of PvP thrown in. |

However, that said, I can now answer the question raised in other threads, could this game have more subs than WOW? Maybe in the East, but defintiely not in the West. Many Western gamers will pass on this title if most of the the best rewards can't be earned equally from the PVE side of the game.

Oh noes you might have to fight against skilled players as opposed to stupid AI that can always be beat with the same pattern. It amazes me why people are so paranoid about any form of PvP. Judging by what people have said on this thread so far you can pick when you want to PvP by going into the zone anyways, so it's not like you're going to spawn in your home town and get slammed. |

Don't you think calling it "Forced PVP" is a bit harsh? Yes, you MAY have to go into areas where you MAY get attacked by an opposing player, but it's not like they're requiring you to go into battlegrounds and spend hours on end doing nothing but pvp. Why be afraid of a little danger? I think it just adds to the excitement, adding a sense of peril to the game. |

As for "dealing with people like me"... how astounding you can make a judgement on my personality based on several short sentences in reference to a question about a game!
In any case- I've had enough of the PVP loot grind in WoW and now am not particularly interested in doing it again any time soon. It's not a quesiton of "omg afraid to PVP!" it's more a matter of "not really in the mood for a PVP-centric game". It's not for everyone, and if the "best" way to enjoy this game is through PVP, then it's not for me. If the only "real" way to gain reasonable progress in a game is by PVP, then ...to me... it is a forced-PVP scenario. That's just how I see it. I'm not in the mood for big guilds and PK'ing madness right now, and that's just how it is. This game won't appeal to everyone, and to expect it will is a bit unrealistic.
I wanted to know if what I had read was true, I asked, and since it was... I'm probably going to skip this game and look for something more suited to what I feel like doing in an MMO right now. I'd like to find a really nice sandbox MMO but they are very limited at this point in time.
Thank you for those who were civil and mature. |

The fact that its "forced" makes it that much more attractive to me :D. I like the concept that you are going to have to fight other players for things and not just the "PvE-till-endgame-then-pvp" crap you see in most MMOs. BTW is there a tentative release date for the NA version of this game >.>" |

Not a fan of ffa pvp even in certain areas. If I wanted to worry about some genetic reject trying to take me out I would have went back into the military. I have not even remotely enjoyed pvp in any form since DAoC which despite having some flaws is probably the best mmo I have ever played. |

in the new version 1.2 in korea, they added a ton of quests for lvls 45+ so you aren't forced to pvp. When we get the game, we "should" get this version sooner or later. |

Aion is a war between 3 factions (albeit one is an NPC faction). It's not FFA. It's got DaoC influences, you get points for kills, advance in ranks, and buy gear thanks to them. It's kind of hard to maintain a high rank, as the higher you get the more AP you lose on death (as there will be more and more players that have lower rankings compared to you). The fortresses you control give you buffs, new NPCs become available etc.
I think DaoC veterans will kind of like this game. Actually it's MUCH more of a DaoC 2 than WAR will ever be. |

I'm curious. Why would someone with a Ph.D even argue on a bulletin board about a computer game? It begs the question on whether you even have one or deserved receiving it. If stupidity has such an affect on you, then perhaps you shouldn't even be playing games as many people would consider it a stupid waste of time, especially in the Ph.D community. |

It's a game. Your participation in it is absolutely voluntary. PvP is a main features of the endgame. If you don't like the features of a game, don't play. If that approach doesn't sit wewll with you, here's some future post topics for you:
Twister - Players are forced to step on circles? Monopoly - So players are forced to go clockwise around the board? DAOC - So we're forced to use only Midgard races in Midgard? |
