Hey all, I'm looking around for a nice MMO that's "different" from the rest and obviously this led me to EVE Online. I've heard lots of comments about the game (everything from you need a space manual to learn to play it, to best space sandbox game ever) :) I'm curious if its too late to start playing EVE as a new player? Since its a sandbox style, I figure it doesn't really have an end game, so starting off fresh would hopefully still have a healthy community, even though its a good few years old? To be honest, I know next to nothing about the game, so Im really looking for some tips on how it works. Im going to download the trial regardless, but if I go in with some expectations on what Im doing that may go in a long way for me subbing or not. I admit I tried to give it a shot a few years ago but my PC couldn't handle it (I had a craptastic laptop) and I found the game to be somewhat confusing and slow starting. Still to be fair I don't think I gave it a real shot.
If anyone has any tips or suggestions I'd love to hear! Cheers

Short answer. No it's not too later to start. As far as tips go for now I will only say READ EVERYTHING you can find and learn. Then figure out what it is you want to do in game and then read more on what you need to do to specialize in that early on. More long winded answers will follow along with the usual parade of trolls telling you that that game sucks and to avoid it. Either way, I hope you enjoy the game and have fun. |

The flames/troll posts don't bother me.. after all, I am an Ex-WoW player (Among almost EVERY other MMO that's been released in 10 years). So Im kinda used to that.
EvE to me seems like a very neat thing to try, I am just hopeful that it really peaks my interest. I've read that it doesn't have servers and actually uses one huge cluster to keep everyone in the same world? Is that accurate (or semi?)
Do you have any links you can share to get me started? I assume the specializations are more or less classes or things you do with your ships? IE if you want to be a miner, or a pirate, etc?
Thanks again for the replies, looking forward to giving this a go! P.S Hows the new Xpac and can you give me a quick 2 sentence summary on what it added please? |

There isnt a linear progression in Eve like other MMOs. That means there isn't a race track for you to follow and ultimately, a players "viability" to whatever pursuit you choose is limited only by your imagination. Eve is the only game of its kind so toss aside all preconcieved notions of MMOs as they can't be applied to this masterpeice of gaming. The only thing I regret so far is not learning that little bit of truth sooner. |

I love it! Sounds awesome
Hopefully Ill enjoy it and start getting into it, thus far its looking very promising. Ive also read they give free updates with EVE, including xpac's... this game could last 20 years at that rate.
Im glad it isn't too late for me to get involved... maybe I just have Star Trek fever after watching that new completely awesome movie :p Either way Im gonna give it a spin
Appreciate all the replies guys! |

Eve wouldn't really work with optional paid expansions since all the content needs to be available to everyone for it to be anything close to fair (say what you like about imbalances in the game, you have to concede that all content is available to anyone with the will and numbers to work for it). That being said, the recent expansion added wormhole mechanics to the game (essentially around 2500 new systems to find and exploit through exploration) and Modular Tech 3 cruisers as the big features. Other changes have come to how Falcons and Stealth Bombers work as well as the Black Ops ships and a host of other changes. Really much of what goes on now that isn't OOOOH SHINY! is to do with balance issues. Any other info can quite easily be found on the EVE forums should you care to look :) |

Just add a bit to the above post - EvE expansions don't work like other MMOs. In most MMOs, expansions expand the game vertically and when one comes out almost everything that preceeds it immediately becomes worthless. EvE expansions expand the game laterally, and new content exists alongside old content. Wormholes and the revamped exploration system are new and shiny but everything else is still as worthwhile as when it was new as well. |

Originally posted by x_rast_x Your description of the expansion packs is amazing and will be using it from now on. EVE, for me, is a game where you get back what you put into it. I started playing EVE Online with 2 other friends back in December. As of now we 3 are working on level 3 missions and hoping to get into level 4s sometime within the next 2 months. It is hard, lawless, and there are alot of little things you will need to pay attention to. There is no "fair"... there is only what you can do, and what you can't do. Near February, I was running a level 2 carrier mission into a 0.3 security area (which I had done about 5 other times) and I decided this time I would take my cruiser as I didn't want to go back for my cheap frigate. I got blown up and pod-killed at a gate by someone in a frigate and his friend in a battlecruiser. I was angry, upset, and was trying to find a way to put the "asshole" into the top 10 most wanted characters on EVE... Luckily, I had a clone and with my friends' help I was back in the same ship I lost within a few days. I used the same name on the ship but added a "II" (two) to the end of it to remind myself what the game was like. If I had been playing solo I imagine I probably would have quit the game right then and there... I realized how easy it was to recover from any mistake so long as you made preparations for failure. Even if all you have is an adequate clone so you don't lose skill points, it doesn't take very long to get back up to where you were... I'd still plan on reserve ship/equipment/money. Don't risk it unless you are willing to lose it. My first taste of PvP was when some jerk tried to "flip" my friend's can while he was mining. The guy was TRYING to start a fight... so when my friend took back his ore, the jerk was attackable by our Corp, and our friend was attackable by his Corp. A member from OUR Corp jumps in to help my friend in a hurricane. I start firing on the drake, click ok on the warning message that pops up, not really reading it... Then Concord jumps in a kicks my ass completely removing my first Fully Fitted Drake. 90 Million ISK gone. This time I wasn't upset, I was trying to figure out what I did wrong... The two "jerks" were in a fleet. My friends/Corp mates were not. My friend was attackable by the "jerk's" Corp, and the "jerk" was attackable by us... but in the ensuing battle, apparently the drake was legally defending his corp mate, had not attacked the miner, and since I was not in a fleet... I was firing on an innocent individual. The battle proved to be a stalemate between the Drake/Logistics ship/Hurricane/Mining Barge... and I was the only loser. I got Concor'dokken because I didn't see that slim rule... and was hasty to PvP. Well... I hope my experience helps you, it is harsh, but when you get it right... it is very nice. Level 4's, Wormholes, and even PvP is fairly easy for my friend's and I... but it might not be the same for a solo person... so I recommend getting friends into it, joining a Corp and PARTICIPATING/VOLUNTEERING... but just be active in anything/everything. TRY IT... and be prepared to lose it. It really helps. |

OP asked for some good links, here's a few I like: EVE WiKI of course, Battleclinics' new player guide is always a favorite: www.battleclinic.com/forum/index.php/topic,3510.msg14690.html A decent fighting guide to get you started www.eve-academy.eu/kainscionofbalance/FightingGuide.html While its not my style, some folks enjoy mining and this will teach you everything you need to know www.envimon.com/francis/eve/completeminersguide_v2.2.pdf and finally, look up EVE University and see about joining them. They exist to help new players get into the game and EVE is a far more fun experience with a team of friends to work with.

I started back in 2008 with my character, though my toon says it's about a year old, it has roughly 6mill Sp and ~2 months of playtime give or take. So im still very new to the game, just resubbed today actually and im having a blast again mining ombre like there is no tomorrow.
Butl like many other has stated before, it is never too late to get into Eve. Its fun and addictive, it takes some brains to get through, but you reek in more rewarding stuff than in most other games. And if anyone wouldbe interested in playing eve, just toss me a pm and i'll hook you up with a longer trial than those 14-days~ Cheers

I'd love to be able to meet some people in game, its much nicer than starting off from the start Also to Klayo, I'd love to team up and get started. My game download is 90% done (minus patches and what not) so when I get started I'll let you know where I end up (if you feel like joining) :) Thank you for the links Kyleran - I will most certainly check them out. As a new player, is it more advisable to be a miner type player or a fighter? I'm more of a "lover" as the above poster mentioned lol :p I think I'd enjoy making money/doing small missions with fights being an afterthought (but still accessable for some PVP fun) :) any suggestions on which route to go guys?
Thanks again all for the great posts!

I tried it for my first time about a month ago and ended up subbing for a month. Give it a shot. ----------------------------- |

yay! Got the trial, and game has installed!
So I'm ready to roll!
I plan to go through the tutorial, but before I start....
Any suggestions on faction? If I should first go after a battle type ship or mining type ship? I'll likely suck at PVP starting out, so Im thinking mining/money is the way to start out?
Any other suggestions or will the tutorial basically fill me in? Thanks again for everyone who has helped, really appreciated the feedback! |
