Those are registerd accounts not active players, F2P games tend to have allot of registerd accounts because its easy to do. if wow counted its registerd accounts rather than Active paying accounts the number will be closer to 30-40 million. If maple story had 75 million accounts i think it will have a little more than 5 servers |

Nope Maple story is talking about players. And 5 servers? haha, have you seen in how many countries maple story is available? But of course, ask an american, there's nothing outside of the US Seriously, if you only take China alone, that's already more than enough to overflow anything. (and I am not even talking about the mmos they have there we don't know about).
edit: yeah I was a little off, Maple story is more than 50 million players and 92 million accounts at the last count..... when you are reaching those numbers it isn't really a difference, is it?

ehhh, you dont understand, MS probably has a MAX of 2million active players world wide, not 75 million....there is not even 75 million mmorpg players for MS to have 75 million people actually playing it. |

Did you read my edit? more than 50 million players and 92 million accounts at the last count. Max 2 million worldwide? Come on. So the 2 million worldwide users have spent 30 million USD on the >US only< cash shop in 2008? And it''s a free 2 play game, most players don't purchase anything. Have you been to countries like China or Korea? Have you ever seen how the mmo culture is in those countries? Have you ever seen an mmo launch in those countries, the huge marketing campains with painted buses driving all over the main cities etc...? 2 million worldwide.... even for Korea it's nothing, don't even talk about China.
edit: and don't forget that in many Asian, South amercian (yes maple has brazilian servers), etc... countries there are more people with computers that can't play 3D games than people who can, so 2D games like maple story are the only mmos they can play.
But anyway, back to your main point.... I think that even if we agree to disagree on the numbers, we can agree that we have enough evidence of wow's small market share, even if it is the most successful western mmo (..... oh... wow also has servers in Asia

SgtFrog, seriously, don't you think that an mmo like Perfectworld (>THE< Chinese WoW), with servers all over Asia, South America, Europe and the US, can have 5x more active players than wow? Perfectworld beeing a free to play mmo vs pay to play? The numbers are in front of your eyes, you just need to open them. These numbers aren't surprising. If someone told an mmo, beeing free to play AND Chinese, had more than 5x the wow numbers, I would believe it. Actually, I am surprised it's only 5x more.

Short answer, Yes.
Do you think people are donkies who just happen to play WoW cos it sux? How can so many people be wrong? I have played WoW, and I find stuff in that game that I have never seen in another MMORPG. I think that is why.
So the nazis where right? wow is populer because of hype and its IP and for most people its there first mmorpg so they dont know any better...
This is a ridiculous argument. Like it or not, WoW is the most popular MMORPG because it is hands down the most polished, complete product on the market. It also has far more content and features than any other MMORPG. Whether or not you like it, these facts are not in dispute. |

Free to play sucks, at least if they do offer an item mall with the usual overpowered options you will expect to find in this endless real money sink. However a model similar to Guild Wars would be nice as it is Pay for New Content. Although there is no reason why they can't charge people for expansions AND charge monthly fees, it would be like shooting their own knees when they can just squeeze people's pocket for both, although EVE and GW don't do that. And even if you play ONE HOUR PER WEEK, it will be hard to find another entertainment option for the same 15 bucks. |

You see, actually >my< eyes are open, since I have been to those countries. Instead of making thoughts and having "ideas" out of thin air I have witnessed the situation myself. But of course the random mmorpg forum posters and armchair specialists who have never seen anything else outside of wow know better. Even without going there, simple logic shows the numbers reported by the media all over are real. And the cash shop sales numbers only confirm this. As you said above, you believe that the 30 million USD sales for 2008 for the US (not taking into account the other countries) are in line with 2 million players world wide, knowing most f2p players never purchase anything. The truth is, what is surprising is that a free to play game (with servers all over the world including huge countries like Brazil, China, etc... - and even more so for a 2D game knowing the popularity of low end computers in those countries) only has 5x more players than a pay to play game. - from this perspective wow is doing very well. Nothing more needs to be said. But anyway, there is no need to argue about this as we all know that for the american Joe there is nothing outside of the US Just look at the cybercafes and internet shops they have around every corner in Korea, China, Thailand, etc... you will start to see how huge the gaming industry is overthere.

Just wanted to point out that even though your correct on the popular/polish and complete comments about WoW compared to the MMO market the remarks about most content and features is wrong, you will find that an old MMO called Everquest 1 holds that title with it's amazing 15 expansions of content.
