Old news. In addition, why would they use the term "pushback" when there hasn't been a release date published? Nobody has pushed anything back. Any specific release date is speculation at this point. They'll release GW2 info propably as soon as Aion finally releases in North America and Europe. Atleast that's what I'd do if I were working in NCSoft.

I agree entierly with the baby :(.  This was suppose to be in beta at the end of last year, let alone any sort of 2-3 year push back.

But why would they want to take away people from the money maker AION to play guild wars. That is silly.  If AION didn't do so well in korea, or flops in the us/eu, we might see GW2 get moved ahead again.

I wouldn't trust anything that is being said outside Anet's GW's or NCSoft's websites or without a signature from the dev team. There has been so much false information flowing about GW2 that I wonder if someone's doing this on purpose.

and I, for one, am more than happy to wait for a quality game than a rushed piece of s**t.

I WANT them to take their time! I want a well sculpted world, solid game mechanics, and skills balance for both PvE and PvP.

I'm sure a lot of the additional dev time is being spent on a new rendering engine. I know the plan was to modify the original, but in today's market new technology is needed to compete.

However...

I'd love to hear something about the game like what classes we can expect to see, and maybe how PvP will be changed. :)

The main reason for the pushback (It *is* a pushback, as was already mentioned, Anet originally planned for a late 2k9 beta) Is that they announced it way too soon.

The original GW spent two years in development before even being announced, and then a little over a year before release. With the GW 2 announcement, Anet had to justify not working on a 4th campaign for GW and releasing a haphazard expansion, EotN. Basically Anet broke form by announcing the game before development even started.

Assuming development on GW2 started in late 2k7 after release of EotN, Anet seems to be on track with a ~3 year development cycle, and the plans for an early beta were just unwarranted optimism.

Tinfoil Hat Zone:

I also suspect that NCSoft is holding back on GW2 announcements to give Aion a better chance in the US market. This may or may not be an unnecessary delay, but if anything gives Anet more time for polish.

Where exactly areany of you getting this info that the game has been "pushed back"

there was NEVER an official statement that we should have had a beta by now, in fact, the official line is: "We will show you when we have something to show you"

not to mention the fat that that Joystiq link story is from Febuary this year... a LOT more has been said since then

There are at least 6 months old threads about this.

Strain don't believe in releasing something too early. He is probably the only one in the MMO market that thinks so, well possibly Kaplan too. GW 2 will come once it is good enough and not ridden by buggs and that is the right way to go. If Mythic and Funcom thought the same they would have a million subs each by now, or at least a lot more.

MMOs takes a lot of time making and releasing anything that is not finnished is just shooting yourself in the foot.

To quote Custer "What could possibly go wrong?".

Arenanet will not leave anything to luck so we will just have to wait until the game is good enough to release.

Up until maybe the 4th q of 2k8 the "upcoming changes and features" section of the official wiki billed late 2k8/early 2k9 as the start of beta. It wasn't really that much of a stretch to believe it either, GW is known to have had an comparatively early open beta period.

Jeff Strain himself gave a speech during the 2008 Game Developers Conference in which he painted the early beta of GW as the primary factor of the game's very stable release and expressed an intention to do the same for GW2.

Also, Anet's community manager made an april 2k8 statement that she played the game, implying that GW2 is already at some level of completion.

Between the complete lack of info coming out from Anet, and the complete silence on the virtues of open beta, I'm inclined to take business as the primary factor over polish or design.

You can't compare the development of Guild Wars with Guild Wars 2, considering they're very different in fundamental aspects, the latter most likely has far more content that needs to be developed (considering new races have been added) and ANet still have to continue developing for the original whilst working on the sequel.

Common sense ain't that common anymore.

While I'm waiting for this game, it's hard to be patient with so little in the way of updates.  A quick little 5 minute note posted every week or two giving a simple outline of progress, upcoming work, sticking points, or whatever would go a long way towards making the wait more bearable.  The plain lack of information or updates on when it's going to come out is terrible, and it's hard to remain patient in light of that.  It'll be ready when it's ready isn't very enticing.

There's nothing else out there that's really standing out as well as GW2 to me.  A brief update from time to time would really be appreciated.  Heck, look at Warhammer...the game absolutely rocked the release sales due to (imo) the frequent dev blog/video blogs released on a regular basis.  Despite the fact that it's Failhammer now, the anticipation and hype built by just a few minutes per week by 1-2 people was tremendous.

I think that's exactly what they're trying to avoid - hyping it up, getting a lot of immediate sales and then a sudden drop. A big steady stream is far better.

I also personally think it's a great way of hyping the game - make people want updates and not assume they'll get them.

I absolutely agree. I too would like to hear something about where they are in the development cycle, but can understand why ArenaNet would avoid strong arm marketing.  I've had enough BS hype so this time I'll try and be patient. :)

www.massively.com/2009/04/27/massivelys-interview-with-guild-wars-cm-regina-buenaobra-part-2/

Anything you can tell us about Guild Wars 2? How is development progressing?
Guild Wars 2 is going to be a much bigger game than the original Guild Wars. Our development team is twice as large as the dev team for Guild Wars, so we're putting a lot of development resources into it. We have regular company-wide play sessions in Guild Wars 2, and it's a blast to play with everyone. The development team also does regular playtesting every day. I can say that it's an absolutely gorgeous game and I'm always astounded at how great our artists are at bringing a world to life.

We're not ready to share more just now, but stay tuned for more information later this year. Keep in mind that unlike most development teams, we've been very open about our decision to start development on Guild Wars 2 right from the very beginning. We've also been building almost everything in Guild Wars 2 from the ground up. A lot of games start development in total secrecy before fans even hear a whisper about it. Our fans have been clamouring for news and updates, and we know it feels like a long time for them. When Guild Wars 2 is released, they'll see that it was worth the wait.

I mentioned this before but I firmly believe there won't be any information given out on GW2 until Aion has been released in North America and Europe. Once that happens I'm willing to bet that you'll start seeing a lot of stuff come out on this game.

There was much discussion about this early last year, and yes, I agree that Arenanet will not put out  a game unpolished. I have the greatest respect for them and the quality they produced with Guildwars.  Of course , I too, am very much looking forward to Guildwars2, and I have the upmost confidence they will do a good job with this. YES, I KNOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR QUALITY,  but you can;t blame a girl for getting excited and a bit impatient!! I want the goodies now!  This is the only game I am truly looking forward to at the moment, the rest are just " meh".

I am sure it will be worth the wait, but this anticipation is killing me!
