I will still search and fight the good fight until I find the game to own all games. |
So about a year or so ago, I heard that Ryzom was a really great game. I downloaded it, installed it, walked in, and walked back out. At the time I just wasn't ready for a "sandbox" and I didn't really like the look of the game.
While I was at work, I read the "comic book" Noob Guide that the devs made for the game and by the end of it was pretty revved up to try it when I got home. I was dead tired, due to lack of sleep from the night before, but I ended up staying awake, playing this game until 1:30 this morning. It is REALLY addictive. I found myself wanting to go to bed, but wanting to get those few more Fighting Skill Points that I needed to use my brand new 2H more (I didn't get them by the way, I still need 5 I really dig the way the game is set up, the skillsets available, the editing options for the skills you get. You can actually, truly, design your fighting skills the way you want to. I also love the way with the crafting, you just take random useful mats that you gather naturally, and throw things together to see what you get...no set recipes, I think that's genius! The one thing I still do not like is the graphics...it's hard going form, LotRo, EvE, Aion, and AoC, to Ryzom. Any of you that have played the game know what I'm talking about. If the devs issued a graphical update, this game would actually give Aion a run for its money for my loyalty, but as it stands, if the game keeps the upward momentum it currently has with me, this will be a great distraction from the (hopefully) 4 months I have to wait before Aion hits US shores and my waiting C:\ drive.
PS: By the way! I'm a group player, I pretty much hate soloing, so if anyone wants to try the game out, or is already doing so and wants to partner up, let me know here, or hit me up in game. My IG name is Matsuro. Currently Playing: Aion |

The graphics in game are actually very good on the main land. The mobs, cities and game world are extremely well done. If you decide to start playing in the matis home city area (Yrk) its amazing atm. I logged in last night and it was snowing god it looked amazing. I will agree that the matis character models are a bit funny looking (Im a Fyros so I hate those pretty metrosexual bastards anyway......). I would also like to remind you, on the mainland the quests no longer give you skill xp. instead they give dappers (money) and fame. Raising fame with a city lets you select a faction if you choose to pvp and raising fame with tribes makes the guards of that area protect you (its awesome to have a tribe less then 100 feet away to run to if you get in trouble while adventuring).
GL and I hope you Enjoy Ryzom as much as I do. Playing: EvE, Ryzom |

If you look at the graphics/art design as being more stylized, more artistic as opposed to trying to be realistic that might help. Think highly stylized for the sake of being stylized. |

In the past year or two, I have really grown in my thinking when it comes to MMO's, I believe. Instead of comparing MMO's, and expecting one to be like another, I have started simply accepting a game for what it is and seeing if I like it. So although I am having a hard time dealing with the graphics, my eyes did start to adjust late last night and only was irritated when I looked at a tree trunk and noticed it looked like one in WoW on low graphics. It, atm, is not enough to turn me away from the game, because the depth and content is certainly there.
...if this game doesn't work, then we'll continue Fate's Great Journey! Next Stop: Mabinogi! Currently Playing: Aion |

That really is the best way to approach any game. Or any thing for that matter. Recently I loaded up Diablo. Very old. I remember thinking the graphics were so amazing. Now, not so much. But I take it for what it is. Just like watching an old Caryt Grant movie. It might be in Black and White but it doesn't mean it's not good. Just different. |

I was looking into this game the other day because of this thread. I didn't look too hard though, since the colors were a bit annoying, so forgive my ignorance on this, but when I went to download it said free trial. I couldn't, however find anything that talked about subscriptions, or any indication on if this was a free to play or pay to play game. Could any of you gentlemen let me know please? |

after a 3 weeks free trial the game is pay to play if you want to continue playing. I've been playing Ryzom since october 13th 2004, and never regretted a single payment. Of course i'm just a hardcore fan ;) |

Same thing happened to me, just tried the game again after all these years. Graphics look down right beautiful on my pc setup. I had to go into the config file and dope it up though lol. With all settings uber high I notice just how clean and beautiful things run! As for the game itself, VERY engrossing! |

yeah, there's a reason the ingame sliders don't go that high though, if i turn up my graphics too much i start seeing trees in low quality (long distance version) rather than the high quality, short distance version. But Ryzom's graphics are by no means dated if you have a pc that can handle some decent graphics. They're not the best around anymore, but they're good allright. |

Ok, please take a look at these. Taken with high settings and on a good PC.
And then tell me please, if this does in fact "look like WoW".
Ok, it´s a comic-style world. Frech-Comic to be precise, but it´s about 6 years old. It released before WoW even. To realy compare it to todays newest inventions in graphics is simply not fair and not possible. It was developed long before Vista was announced and DX9 was just around the corner. ;) So, for these circumstances it´s amazing whait the graphic engine can do.
CU SaM (Fanboy and proud of it) Ryzom, we dare to be different.
Do you dare to adapt? |
