We are looking at nothing as this is probably the stupidest analogy ever to come accross mankind. |

It is already legal in quite a few MMOs. And straightly speaking, against company policy is not exactly "illegal". No one is going to jail for gold buying. |

Originally posted by rello If your time is more valuable than money, then go find something else to do. MMOs, like it or not, require time. That's part of the hobby. If you don't like it, you need to find a different hobby. It's no better to say "I want to play professional sports but I don't like all the training and the practice so I'm going to use steroids (or other enhancing drugs) so I don't have to actually do anything, I can just get to the good stuff." Unfortunately, real life doesn't work that way. You do realize that all steroids do is reduce the time you have to rest between working out right? So in reality its allowing your body to train and practice MORE. Unfortunately you post without knowing the facts. You do realize that this is an analogy, right? Stop getting hung up in the irrelevant details and actually debate what it means. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

If you don't get the analogy between those things you should think more. But then, you could read the mentioned article about steroids and see that they are not as deadly as the press makes them seem, heck, even drugs when not overabused are not that deadly, instead the why not do it resides into more than being bad for your health. And sorry, I can't think of illegal gold sales without associating with F2P item malls in the sense that they are merely a legalized real-gold sink into "asteroids" for your character. Yes, they can be compared and pretty much are the same - while in sports it reduces the time you have to train, increases your physical limits or resistance, it pretty much does the relative same in RPGs: reduces the time you have to spend, increases your gameplay limits (would you have be able to farm for that big item otherwise? would you have been able to reach that level or rule in pvp without the big xp enhancers, attribute enchances and upgrade enhancers?). IMO, when MMORPGs let more and more people buy gold, and when they put their F2P lies with their cash shops, they are merely abusing their idiot mechanics that fail to remove what makes farming boring or unnecessary and let people sink their money when their MMO fails. If you HAVE TO BUY gold in a MMO, it fails for you, fact. Go play in some single-player RPG environment where you can cheat freely, the MMO part of the genre has to constantly fight against things that give edges to other players - gold farming, power leveling, hacking, item malls and so on. Don't start the "RPGs are uneven because you must spend time" BS - that is part of the character persistency and development mechanic of RPGs, and that merely exists to make people interested in playing - why should you keep killing virtual monsters on a not-so-great graphical and sound environment? Because you want to evolve in that game - gain experience, develop skills, gain acess to higher level maps and monsters, and go further in the storyline. Time versus how you play should be the only valid measurements for your evolution games, or did people forget the objective of games is to have... fun? Probably, because they are too focused spending all their RL money power leveling characters and buying gold to afford everything in their games, simply because they do not enjoy the RPG part of games - RPGs are not for you then, there are certainly a lot of more competitive genres around: RTS, TCG, FPS, etc. |

Frankly I think steriods should be legal in sports. At this time in profesional sports, whats the point really. Players take it and get by even with the testing, especially in the NFL. Level the playing field imho. As to buying gold, I do it and dont have any problems with it. Farming for hours to get gold the good 'ol way, is time I do not have. |

What hasn't been addressed is the growing use of steroids in MMORPG players. With games adding more twitch elements to game play, you really need to work on your clicking ability, and often players turn to steroids.

Who the hell are you, and why should I care? |

Originally posted by EricDanie The difference is that in one, the item malls are a legitimate part of the game, designed and run by the company that wrote and operates the MMO and in the other, it's not. F2P item malls are typically necessary to play the game at all, there are a lot of things that, no matter how long you play or how hard you try, you cannot get for free. That's not true of a P2P MMO. In one, such malls are a part of the rules and a part of the game. In the other, they are against the rules and a means of cheating in the game. You can't point to a different game with different rules and demand those rules apply elsewhere. If you want to play that game with those rules so badly, go ahead. Just don't try to do it in a game where it simply doesn't apply. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

Illegal (per the rules of most games) and unfair shortcut? Check. Sacrificing the health of the game for short term benefit? Check. Putting yourself at risk (hacks, viruses etc.) for the same short term benefit? Check.
Yep, I'd say the analogy works. |

I voted it is similar to steroids... but I also think there should be a seperate baseball league where steroid use is considered acceptable. Give them somewhere to be ridiculous, give them fields twice as big and pay them half as much. Either way everyone wins. |

You are kinda off in your analogy. Steroids are used in sports to give the player(s) and edge over other players. A great many MMOs out today are primarily PvE, so the edge you are trying to obtain is not over another player but rather the actual game itself. |

Originally posted by Meltdown Unfortunately, that's really pretty stupid, it's like having a baseball league where the players can shoot up PCP and carry spiked baseball bats to stop others from tagging them out. At that point, it stops being baseball and starts being a melee. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |
