The actual game world is the only thing in the game that somewhat respectable, but everything else (NPC, building, characters, animation, spell effects, sound, Ai, movement, UI, etc... are all done in someones basement. Though, the OP really shoul've used Hexen II instead of DOOM as a comparison, because that claim actually holds merit.
The point is, most MMORPG Developers want to bring something new and add to the community at large, not take from it. For a game released in 2009, Darkfall is a complete joke and looks like some amature project some college kids were working on. Here: Project Offset (more early development) <-- That was 3 years ago with two people. This is a game engine that 2 college students have been working on ...! ( for the last 3-4 years)... and just recently started adding more people to their Dev Team, since they know have funding for the game. Look at the first video I linked. All that was created by 2 people and makes use of Modern technology... not this outdated crap Aventurine wants to push off on us. In which Aventurine has had more than 5 years to develop and millions at their disposal, plus a team of 30... So, how can Aventurien or any of you claim that Darkfall is anything but a joke ...?
Yet, here we have 2 young men, developing a game (and game engine) over the last 3-4 years, $200k and until recently, self funded, giving you a soon to be released game that looks like THIS. How can you make excuses for Aventurine. It doesn't matter that these guys aren't from Greece.... they are still an indi company. Though, just 7 months ago they got huge backing. To see what a real developer does with in influx of cash, look at their latestest developments/trailers. HERE & HERE. That is the quality of stuff us veteran gamers consider worthy of the words "Revolutionary" or "quality".
The point is, even if Darkfall had 50% of the quality Project Offset has, it would be respectable. But it doesn't. Matter of fact almost nothing in Darkfall works as intendeed... it's still a beta project at the core levels. I am not talking about animations or tweaks, I am talking about the fundmental mechanics. Such as no real skill tree... it's an EXP tree. it's fake! Darkfall does NOT have a true skill based system, but instead it about exp and when you reach a certain level of exp, you are granted additional spells or abilities. (ie: @ 20 skill points, 40 skills point, 60 skill points, etc... or whatever they have changed it to now) It is not like swiming, block, backstabbing, dodge, dual wielding, safe fall, etc in EQ or UO. Where every time you see a skill increase in your skill.. it actually makes your character a little better at those abilities... In Darkfall those are just experience indicators of that skill and you will not receive any benefit until your EXP reaches a certain level, THEN you receive a benefit.... it's the same for all aspects of Darkfall's skill system and it's pethetic. That is not a pure skill system and just another way Aventurine cut corners when making this game. So that brings a us all back to Tasos Flambouras and why so many people see this game as a flop. Because it a cheap product, with an incompetent lead Dev and fanbois who don't even know the first thing about video games, let alone past games that were better than Darkfall 5 years earlier. You remove Combat from Darkfall, what do you have..? NOTHING! You have a game world that you can just roam around and look at.... not the same for Vanguard, EQ, Ryzom, LOTR, etc. So you must look specifically at Darkfalls combat as the whole game. RMB and sieging is basically DFo in a nutshell. You can have global, regional or Clan politics in ANY game, so that doesn't count. So break down Darkfall from a logical standpoint you have Combat (ranged, melee & healing) and you have sieging. Now compare those mechanics to other similar games and you can easly establish where Aventurine failed, and why it's a laughing stock. |

And the winner is.... What has Darkfall been DOING for the past 8 years? No, I'm not asking the next person to post a list of things that they were doing, obviously they wern't doing enough. 2 Kids in college beat out a small greek team, that just speaks for itself. Thinking of trying TERA? Check out my guild on Basilisk Crag! We're actively recruiting! www.proxytera.enjin.com/ |

Yeah, matter of fact... last year, INTEL bought them, gave them a long vacation (they needed a rest) and now McGrath and the Stringer brothers (lead developers) have hired a complete Development Team. This game, along with the new Unreal Engine will use CPU based physics and just blow anything else out of the water. If the game itself doesn't rock your world, understand the game engine will be licensable, like the Unreal Engine. Which makes developing a game all about content and shortens the development cycle. Next year, there wil be a bunch of cheap games trying to showing people with gadgetry from these new engines.. pass on them. There are some major games in development, Mortal Online will touch on some of these new technologies I beleive, but show-casing technology and actually hving it do soemthing in game are two different things. |

It's unbeliavable some people take this seriously, for every game you can make a "Doom" comparison. Doom is sacred. There's a legend that was the Chuck Norris game, until they implemented death in Doom. OP could even make a blog about it, picking up random games and taking screenshots on shitty monitors on the worst graphical options possible. And don't spare any game or you will be making favoritisms like our legendary friend Ed does.

Don't insult the legend. Doom is the God of video games. |

Do you really just leave your settings at max? Also considering that DF claims itself to be about "Large Scale PvP clan fights". Wouldn't that suggest that most of the time, people are are already running it in low/med settings, only switching when alone, or to do vanity shots. If I'm wrong by all means, please do show us a video with you and around 50+ people in it, with high settings, and the FPS showing, to verify it's at a playable rate. |

Hell, we've seen the low rez ones and even then it is not a playable FPS rate. PC's warp all over the place and you could never hope to aim and hit one, just swing widly and hope you don't tag a friendly. Like I said earlier about the posted shots, I can create anything static in numerous programs I own to "prove" how good my world looks but in reality it is total BS. That was the same lie that was blatantly practiced by Deceit-n-Lie's developer Farcelan. They published numerous Photoshopped pictures from the game and others that were totally not in game. Go to the Deceit-n-Lie forums and take a look at the first sticiked thread. It was full of fake photos. I have seen the same with Dork-n-Fail. What I have seen in game is nothing like what I see posted as "actual game shots".
