I've tried all the big MMOs in the last 4-6 months. After playing LOTRO for 2 years (mainly because I was in a great guild) I got bored and decided to try a new MMO. I bought WAR, bored after 2 weeks....Then I bought AoC, bored after 3 weeks... My girlfriend and I decided to try WoW again. We played WoW for about 1 year in the past and left for LOTRO when it launched. Everyone enjoys differnent games but for us WoW is by far the most fun. The graphics arnt top notch but great graphics dont make a great game in my eyes. From my experience MMO companys are concentrating too much on graphics these days rather then making a MMO packed with awesome content. IMO WoW is the best MMO out right now and will continue to be for along time (I havent played EQ2 in awhile so I'm not too sure how it is now). WoW is loaded with endless content. All the other MMOs I've tried just dont seem as polished and fun as WoW....I know the WoW haters will hate me for this but WoW owns all folks...whether you all wanna beleive it or not. LOL! WoW wouldnt have 10+ million subscribers otherwise. Its simply a great game which new MMORPGs coming out try to match. No company will outdue WoW in a long long time unless a company grows some balls and takes some risks (launches a totally different MMO with a new approach to MMORPGs) Companys need to stop focusing so much on graphics as well. Most of us want a well polished MMO with great content. Games like AoC and Darkfall simply dont have the content to keep gamers interested. The graphics are great but the game itself gets old in no time. Whats everyones thoughts??

I disagree with your saying that WoW has endless content, at least in a rational sense. I actually quit WoW because I ran out of things to do. Aside from that, I agree to an extent. WoW is a very simple game. If you want extreme depth, it won't work out for you. It's very solo oriented, if you want group content, it won't work out for you. If you want strong pvp it also will, most likely, not work out for you. If you want to play and just have fun, do some interesting quests and read some pretty decent lore WoW works well. It's just not made for people who consider themselves hardcore. Before this expansion ends there will be tons of end game content, it will just all be too easy for my taste. |

Any mmo with an Actual Endgame can't have endless content. I currently play Eve and that game has endless content. It's not for everyone though and even though WoW has an endgame it doesn't mean its bad, It just means it's not my game tbh.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom |

I agree with the original poster, I left WOW last july just as my guild split up during the burning crusade and I tried most mmo's, EQ2, EVE online, AOC, Star wars galaxies (epic fail) and Warhammer. I played WAR the most (for 3 months) and got to level 30 but i felt there was something missing. I just didnt get the same excitment as I did from WOW. I do agree however that most of the player base in WOW is a bit childish sometimes but sensible adults do still play it, its just finding them thats the problem. I finally went back to WOW one month into WOTLK and I dont regret it one bit. WOW is a big part of my life and i love every second of it :) |

Can even say that some casuals don't even like it that much either. |

WoW does not have endless content i actually quit because there was nothing left to do in the end game besides a few raids that take 2 hours to clear lol |

I play EQ2 and there are a lot of people who have resubbed or just started to play because they enjoy the challenge, and are sick of WoW with its free gear give away. Its still gonna be up there til some other mmo decides, HEY lets give shit away too! but well just have better graphics, and BAM WoW 2.0.
Eh, it is what it is =]. PS - All mammals have nipples. Get over it already.

I place it 2nd behind EQ2. WoW has no real character development once you hit the level cap - and no real development as you level, its just a static line of going up levels. EQ2 has the achievement system on top of leveling that adds far more depth to the gameplay. Its spell system adds another layer of character development. As character development is what I play mmorpgs for I have to rate EQ2 higher. WoW is a nice game, I had some fun with it for a good while but there is nothing other than loot to aim for.

Its been said before, it will be said again. Most popular does not equal best. True for movies, music, cars, women , fast food and yes, even MMORPG's.

I'm looking for QUALITY. Games like AoC and DArkfall are lacking in QUALITY not innovation. Make a polished quality game, and you will get subscribers. LoTRO is proof of that. It's not innovative, but it's a quality game when compared to many of the latest releases, which is why it has enough subs to keep it going. I don't want an MMO FPS or MMO RTS hybrid, or any other "innovation". Give me a straight up MMORPG, and spend the time to polish it so there's no game breaking bugs, there's plenty of content, the classes or skills are at least roughly balanced, it looks good as far as artwork and animation, and I'll play it.

Originally posted by Ethian My thoughts... well, tbh it pisses me off when people say this, open your eyes and stop being so niaive. Companies don't launch MMO's "to try to compete with WoW". They launch what they hope is a cool MMO and to make some money. Years ago all the original MMO's came out. For eg. EQ, Asheron's Call and DAoC which is still my personal favourite. All were successful, some still still are going strong, you don't NEED 11.5mill subs to be "successful" as much as some of you small minded fools seem convinced of. You're the ones banding it around like it's your own personal ePeen. Look at how well EVE has done, a real slow burner, 6 years old this week and stronger than ever. Do you think they give a shit about WoW. Of course they don't. They're making a ton of money, creating, running and playing a game they love. Is WoW a great game and polished to the hilt, for sure, but it's just a fluke really. Is any MMO ever going to get those kind of subs again, not a hope in hell. As new MMO's come along of course they're not going to complete with WoW. $115mill a month buys alot of polish. A MMO from a standing start is never going to be on the same level. Nobody seems to realise this when they're making they're sweeping statements. Open you eyes... |

WoW is Elvis, all hail the king! Kyle, Kyle, Kyle, it's not best becasue it's popular, it's popular because it's best. The side effects of it's popularity are that it's looked down upon by self proclaimed elititst. That is the degree in which comparisson with TV and music works. Truly awful products never make it in the long run and WoW has made it in the longest of runs (speaking of played, reviewed and imortalised on TV, machinima and the hopefuly incoming live action movie). You have the same effect in every entertainment form available. The more someone invests in his hobby the more he requires from it to get the same high like the first time, it just works like that. I'm at the same place with movies, but I'm still unspoiled enough with games to be able to enjoy games just for fun, not for some deeper, life afirming expirience. Only way anyone can factually try to prove WoWs inferiority is by listing features WoW doesen't have. The problem with that is that you can do that with game that competes with WoW for same or similar audience. It's just that other games have much more missing or unfunctional features.
Taste is something else, you can't qualify taste, what you can qualify is subscribtion numbers, review scores, number of years that playerbase is growing, impact on the competition, cultural references and social sphere penetration rate. Try comparing any other game by those terms and see what you get, becasue everything else is just taste. Only taste anyone ever really cares for is their own, so taste is cheap.

WoW is a great product but just to be fair it belongs to a product category where things are not following the pattern of binomial distribution but rather big gets bigger/winner takes it all. Carl Lewis running is along a binomial distribution curve and hence the difference between number 1 and number 2 is very very small. A piece of software/technology that increases in value the more people that use it belongs to the second category - compare to Operating Systems (Microsoft), video standards (first VHS later DVD), torrent sites (Pirate Bay), search sites (Google) and finally MMOs (WoW). This just means that being big is a value in itself that at times lead to that inferior products actually win (VHS over Betamax is one example, Microsoft Windows over Apple OS is another). For the record - WoW is the most polished and complete product out there in my opinion. However, like Pheace stated age is starting to catch up and I would be surprised if not something happened to its overall popularity near-term. If WoW then follows the overall trend for 'winner takes it all' products changes can come fast once they arrive. |
