Managing Editor Jon Wood is back with another countdown. This week, Wood looks at five 80s cartoons that he believes would make great MMOs. Click on to read his list, then let us know what else should have made the cut on our forums. Anyone who grew up in the 1980s grew up watching many of the same, 30 minute toy commercials known as Saturday morning cartoons. Those same children, in all likelihood, grew up in households where video games had become more a part of daily life. Consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis together with the emergence of more games for the personal computer which was becoming more and more popular in homes made gamers of many of them. It seems only natural then that these two childhood memories, cartoons and video games, come together in this list of 80s cartoon IPs that, should a development studio CEO get nostalgic, would make for interesting MMORPGs. Ok he picked a good set of cartoons that would make good mmo's and i do agree with most of what he wrote about them too. Definitely would like to see a RoboTech mmo. Currently playing: |

A Transformer's MMO centered around the war before the comics would be incredible. A mass Transformer PVP game. Transformers on Earth would just be an awkward MMO... |

I'm thinking maybe Dungeons and Dragon.... no wait, nm. How about, Superfiriends...no, wait, nm, DC Onlines got that one covered.... Looks like you took all the good ones, perhaps Voltran might have been another possibility.

They have to make a Smurf MMO. 1. The curse word filter would just substitute the word "Smurf", no matter what was typed: "You smurfing piece of smurf! I'm going to smurfing pwn your smurf and feed your smurfs to the smurfing smurf-smurfs!" 2. Only one smurfette per server limits the whole males-playing-females debate. Cyber-smurfing would be limited. Well... probably. 3. The devs only have to schedule one raid a week, involving pure pwnage of Gargamel and Azrael. The rest of the time you would just be eating mushrooms (or was it living in them) and making fun of the other smurfs. 4. You can finally meet all the smurfs they never allowed on camera: Stoner Smurf, Douchebag Smurf, Spanky Smurf, etc.
I know, the true joy of this game is if you could play one of the humans and walk around smushing the smurfs. It would be smurftastic. |

Silverhawks, how come no one but me remembers the silverhawks? I agree with all of them but carebears. oh and mask was an awsome show, not so good on the mmo idea cause it would be a lot like twisted metal. |

There is a fan made Robotech MMO that has been in developement for years. Mot much has been done with it forever though. Second to Star Wars Robotech is my favorite lore. It's just a question of what era would the MMO best work since the story spans so many years? www.robotechmmo.com/ |

Well, a Transformers MMO, the wars right after the Autobots and the Decepticons escaped their captors (the Quintessons) would be a perfect time to create the universe because of the early history and the openess of the lore at that time period. If you read really deep into the Transformers universe, they even had Robot gods and stuff...how awesome is that? MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit. |

Thundercats would be awesome, but could get stale if Cat was the only major PC race (I know they had some allies here and there, but still...) I wholeheartedly disagree with the article's assertion that TMNT wouldn't make for a good MMO. In fact, it could make for a superb MMO. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_&_Other_Strangeness TMNT was already a tabletop game. I don't know how successful it was or wasn't, but the key to its fun was that it didn't limit you to turtles as PCs. You had a large array of animals you could mutate, all with unique characteristics. Could be a lot of fun :) |
