im wondering, would it be fantasy based or space based, or even RL based, or a mix of it all?

to which limits could they push it?  10 million players in the same seamless world, on one single server?

gigantic player empires to rise and fall?

how would you imagine this one super mmo to be like?

 

im personally thinking of a space based mmo, with aspects of "eve online" and "infinity, the quest for earth", with each of the more than 10.000  planets looking unique and being interacteable.  each planet with their unique flora, fauna, mobs and quests....

gigantic space objects with their very own adventures and so on and so on

The sci fy setting is probably the best.

Each world could be a small mmo by itself. some world would be PVP, other PVE.

Some world would have magic, deities, other might not.

One would be kidding themselves if they thought it would be anything less than WOW with ingame ads.

It would be a super mmess.  No one would be able to make any decisions about anything.  Too many cooks spoil the broth.

It'd probably be a sort of God-sim based on parallel dimensions and time travel.

Imagine .. you're "Bob" and you're walking around a huge facility that is filled with portals/doorways.

Step through one, and you're in Azeroth, taking control of a pink-haired gnome warrior.
Step through a different one, and you're on Tattooine, embodying an astromech droid.

The game-world would basically be a lobby that allowed access to different game-worlds.

Each developer would be charged with creating and maintaining a single game-world, and the player would gain achievements from each game-world that contributed to their "overall" character development.

A mess.  Too many cooks in the kitchen.  Anyone in business knows what comes of too many people making decisions.

Would be a complete and utter mess. Consider:

 

Suppose a single MMO developer decided to introduce a new class "Uber-Jedi-Master" that was completely broken. Then instead of just having one broken game, this "Uber-Jedi-Master" would start showing up in every other game as well - so they'd all be ruined.

 

Similarly if a new unbalanced item was introduced.

 

And such things would happen - if people could freely travel between areas, then I'd suspect many would want to go to the area with the best loot. So the competition between developers would stop being "Who can make the best game" and start being "Who can make an area that gives away the most stuff". Result - rampant item inflation, and a ruined game.

But i tell you what would happen ...meltdown, wouldnt take too long till they fight each other to get a bigger part of the cake ...specialy if the title is a success.

If anyone here ever played the RPG Planescape Torment or the D&D Planescape campaign I think that would make an awesome MMO. Imagine the game centered around a massive Sigil and doors to all the alternate planes of existance. All the opposing factions, man the possibilities would be limitless. Expansions would just be adding a new plane of existance with new doors somewhere in Sigil.

lets just assume there would be proper contracts being signed, where every involved party would get the appropriate part of the cake, and lets also assume they would do it organized.

Absolutely.

Eventually after being unable to make a decision on how or what "perfect" is,  they would do what they do now: Pick a formula that works and not innovate.

When that happens, it won't matter what the setting is.

There would only be one option worse than this: Allowing the public to vote on which features they want in a game.

In that case, our fate would lie in the hands of 4chan. God Help Us All.
