So I don't have a lot of time to play MMOs anymore but I read about them a decent amount and try to at least try trials when they come out so I have a good grasp of the market. Well, last night I downloaded and played The Chronicles of Spellborn for a little while. By little while I mean I am almost level 4 :).

What I noticed in the game is that I could dodge attacks, jump from attack, aim with my bow, and it seemed like watching other people PvP was pretty fun. Also, the tutorial well done and I could climb ladders. So my question is this, I downloaded and was able to play the game with no problem and seemed to have "skilled" PvP and a polished intro into the game. Also, the world looked pretty (though my character not so much)... oh yes the question: Why is DF much different than that game, besides full loot? (I'll be honest, I don't know barely anything about TCoS and haven't played it much yet)

we are probably about in the same boat as far as TCoS, just a couple hours. Only a couple hours into DF as well, so here is what little info I can give you:

  • TCoS has a much more polished cartoony look.
  • Questing seems much more prevalent in TCoS
  • About equally unique combat systems, very different from each other.
  • DF has no "build your own combos"
  • DF isn't level or experience based. Skills only, you get better with practice.
  • Its hard to find a PvP spot in TCoS, exact opposite in DF.
  • DF user interface is less intuitive and looks clunky in comparision.
  • No PEP in DF (which I think is a fantastic Idea and would be a good addition to DF or any mmo)
  • DF community is more closed and aggresive.
  • Belonging to a guild seems almost essential in DF, TCoS looks/sounds fairly soloable.
  • DF is a "Indie" (sandbox) game, TCoS was/is much more heavily funded.
  • Support for DF is weak, Support for TCoS is Akklaim... also weak. (um if your in US)

I have them both installed and ready to play but I always seems to log into DF, more rewarding to me. But thats just an opinion.

Pretty good answer, thanks. What about PvP though? Is the PvP meaningful in TCoS? Are you fighting a battle against something or is it just possible to PvP? Well I guess more importantly, what is the point of TCoS overall? PvE? PvP? Raiding? RvR?

I dont have enough information to answer that accurately sorry. I think that TCoS only has PvP at minimal key areas and I am fairly certain there is no progression linked to it.

I woud like to add that there are pvp servers for tcos where there are more then enough mid/high level area's where you can slaughter each other. There are also mosh pits at some towns where people can fight against each other in little  arena's. There is also a arena district where you can do some pvp in a large arena. The next patch adds some serious pvp content. You can read more about it here http://www.tcos.com/en/news,id272,patch_1_0_4_scroll_keys_courage.html

I played TCoS and found it to be a very fun MMO. There is something with realtime combat that make it stand out from almost any other "themepark" game. But i have only time for one MMO right now. So i choose DF for the big wars going on. If i didnt have DF i would play TCoS. So if you want PvP, get DF. And if you want PvE, get TCoS.

Daarco forgets one thing, the TCoS makers promised heavy House vs House combat post-release, when people start fighting for other shards out in the Deadspell Sea.

Ohh! I didnt know about that. It sounds awesome.

Do you know if the shard ships will be involved in PvP later on?

Why ask OTHERS....?

Just download it and try it for yourself. It's free to get and free to play in the starter area. You'll buy it though, because once you get higher level and have a taste of PvP you'll be addicted!

Some key words I wrote:

"...last night I downloaded and played The Chronicles of Spellborn..."

"...noticed in the game is that I could..."

"...I could climb ladders..."

Those are what you call statements that indicate I was playing the game. My question was how does it compare to DF, a game I definitely cannot and will not play until a trial surfaces. Which further reminds me, if TCoS offers a trial to get you addicted, why won't DF even let me buy it?

TCOS was very cartoony to me, I tried the trial. Frankly I also didnt like the combat system as well. Guess I will forever be stuck in DAOC type mindset.

Of course DF dosnt have a trial etc so I cant comment on that game. I have not suscribed to it.

As simple as I can put it.

DF: EVE  in it's earlier days but with more 'to do'

TCoS:  Kinda a cross between Guild Wars and DAoC, but with a much better and 'human' combat system.

Both can end up really good games, but it's the case of Sandbox vs Level Based really. As TCoS is free to download (client is compltely free, all you have to pay is the sub past Fame 7) and easier to get hold of atm try that until theres a trail (if there ever is) of DF

Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!

I also thought about this! But I seemed to have been drawn to the combat in TCoS rather than DF. I think that the pvp rewards and penalties in DF are cool and feel that its the only thing lacking in the PvP of TCoS.

Once they flesh out House vs House combat and include a way to take control of shards and use shardships, I can see this game having some very interesting situations.

Did you really mean to type that? are you mad?

Even back when Eve started there were tons of different play options.

In DF all you ever see are small teams roaming around killing newbs solo and macro gathering.

Why do you feel the need to insult Eve?

This is a false statement. Both games were developed by indie companies and not heavily funded, and that is where the similarities end.

Everyone knows about Darkfall's tragic history so I won't bother to reiterate. TCoS was developed by a very small Dutch company, developed in less time then DF was, and released "pre Acclaim" with alot more polish then most games. It was later picked up for distribution by Frogster Interactive, Mindscape and Acclaim Games. They recognized potential and ran with it.

I had fun in both games, but if I was going to continue paying for a game, TCoS would be my choice. I prefer the environmental graphics, open world, and open FFA full loot of DF, but the TCoS combat system is far more superior and alot more exciting the higher level you become. The skill deck system is truely innovative. Easy to learn and hard to master. What I didn't like about TCoS was the cartoony graphics, and the feeling at early levels (pre 20) of slow progression. The combat felt a bit slow at first but in later levels, after experimenting with different skill deck combinations, I understand now why. Now it feels too fast as I pay attention to my skill deck and PVP player positioning   ;)
