This is the natural order of things on mmorpg.com.

In the end, all the high ratings in the world matter for nought, its subscription numbers that matter and I doubt a single MMORPG developer out there is gunning for anything under 500K subs in their business plan.

So by that mark alone, to be truely successful, games should reach and maintain 500K +

Not saying games with less don't continue to run,  and run well, but from strictly a marketing perspective, 500K is the magic number.

Regardless, we seem to be hearing much better reports now that the game has been launched in the US, not quite sure why, perhaps Acclaim isn't making such a screw up as everyone feared.

Many people are posting on these forums that they enjoy the game and seem to outnumber the naysayers.

We'll find out in the coming months whether the game has legs or not.

I guess 95% of all MMOG's are failures according to that standard. Only a few have ever broken 500k for any meaningful period of time.

And what does popularity mean to us anyway? If popularity is so important then I guess we should all be listening to Micheal Bolton and driving a Toyota Camry. Thanks, but no thanks. I'm perfectly happy with my niche Subaru WRX and listening to Tool.

AFAIK, the game was planned to be niche from the start and that is good. A niche can be quite large still, see EVE.

Creating multiple accounts to hype, nothing like it.

This game makes paint dry faster because it'd prefer dieing to being that bored.

I'm fairly amazed to see it's #1 ranked right now too.

It's not a bad game, it certainly has a better combat mechanic, but I figured the first impression was bad enough that it'd have turned off a lot more people.  You can't even get into the real merit of the game until you hit level 10-20, and it's a long grind on the way there.

In any case, the rating is premature.  We've only a little over 100 votes in right now, which isn't bad, but #2 (Atlantica Online) has over 700 and something highly unusually monolithic like World of Warcraft has over 8000.

Also, people tend to have a less favorable feeling about a game after that "new game vibe" wears off, so opening week rating will probably be a bit higher than the actual average.

In the meanwhile, anyone who says the game sucks will just have to rate it down or else get laughed off the board until the rating is lower than #1.

In regards to people lowering or boosting ratings on the site.

This probably wouldn't work..

It'd be nice if you had to have proof of playing a game before you rate it on this site..

Not sure how it would work.

I'm thinkin that when you want to rate a certain game, you send a request for that game to MMMORPG.com..

MMORPG.com will then send you an e-mail, requesting a screenshot of your character , which must be at least half way to max level for that game.

MMORPG.com would keep a database of the characters names, as to not get duplicate screenshots from people trying to gimp the ratings.

Finally, we might actually start to get accurate ratings..

Just a random thought. Not really serious.

They actually have some kind of security in place right now.  You have to have a rank of at least 5/100 in order to rank a game.  That's a fairly good countermeasure in that anyone who would rank a game just to flame it wouldn't go through the effort to earn the rank needed to do it.  Those kind of folk tend to have rather low attenton spans ;)

Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody the power, the other to crave it.

To get to that rank you only need like two posts on your first day to get.

Apparently not, as I've insufficient rank to make a vote and I've been posting quite a bit today and have 324 posts under my belt from earlier.

I probably have to wait 24 hours for the posts to go through.  By that time, many impulse rankers will have forgotten this site exists.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but I am saying it's a lot better than nothing against spastic little downvoters.  It's the ones that register specifically to skew voting results that you need to look out for, and they're pretty much thwarted unless they're willing to wait 24 hours and make several quality posts.

Almost all new games spike up the first month or two. Think of it as the new game honeymoon.   It will be coming down in the next few weeks after the glow is gone then you will have a better view of how it sits.

Well, it's obviously not working well enough.

It's a fact that Atlantica's rating is boosted.

This also doesn't address the problem of people just going to a game and rating it low because they didn't like it for 5 minutes/don't play it.

I'm boycotting 10-pigger MMOs.

TCoS is an epic game...but it is still new and has its lil bugs. TCoS is what Darkfall should have been IMO....I have played both and TCoS combat is better and overall skill is takes to succeed is more. I play on a PvP server and 1 skilled person can take 2 or 3 newbs. Very fun content with alot of quests. Arena coming to game next patch with pvp sets etc. End game instance in game atm and more are coming.......Only game i have ever played where i said in zone chat when i started i wanted to try pvp....within 2 seconds a gm summoned me and taught me pvp.

Well, personally it isn't my top game but it is different and fresh. It is good for the genre if new thinking is rewarded insted of just copying other peoples work.

Gratz TcoS.

You might not like Atlantica Online, but actually the rating isn't boosted.  I can tell along at least two tangents.

First, it only has 700 votes, which isn't enough for a good boosting.

Second, because even the professional reviewers seem to really like Atlantica Online.  In fact, they seem to have even ranked it higher than the players.

So, along these two tangents of evidence, it should be pretty clear you're confusing fact with opinion.

This also doesn't address the problem of people just going to a game and rating it low because they didn't like it for 5 minutes/don't play it.

Maybe, but outside of programming the computer to read minds, how are you going to fix that? Some would argue this isn't even a problem: in an opinion poll, the 5 minute impression counts.

Anywho, Chronicles of Spellborn is down to 8.4 now, that's a more reasonable rating. It's still performing pretty well.

I think that the fact that TCoS has weathered the fanboy mark down attack that we were all expecting and retained it's 8.4 (on par with LotR and Atlantica) is great news!

Everyone expected it to drop, there were several posts prediciting it in fact from supporters of the game, and for exactly the same reason that we have seen the tone of this forum change so drastically since live launch. This game, waived aside before as a 'nothing' because it didnt have much pre-launch hype (the sheeple don't like game's with no pre-launch hype...) is suddenly in their face and they don't like it. It now threatens their favourite little mmo.

This game isnt for everyone, even SiL said that, and it is a niche game for people that are looking for something different. Tbh, I honestly wouldnt care if it dropped right off the rating meter...

It might let us get back to the nice community here we had before it started becoming known to the recognised trolls.

The trolls are out in a flock for sure. But i will tell you I have been arguing with people for 2-3 months or more about this game. I really don't mind anyone saying they don't like it. The style or gameplay is not for everyone. No problem at all. My problem is their poorly thought out reasoning. They did not like the 2 minute tutoriial or there were not enough bears to kill in 5 mins after you start the game. I played wow and i remember not having enough of those srougy wolves in the starting area either.>>But I kept playing.

If you don't like it because that is your opinion you will get no argument from me. It is the reasons that get me and I been arguing for awhile.
