SEATTLE, Washington - April 24, 2009 - NCsoft®, the world's premier publisher and developer of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), and ArenaNet®, a wholly owned subsidiary of NCsoft and the acclaimed developer of Guild Wars®, today announced that on the cusp of its fourth anniversary, the Guild Wars franchise has exceeded six million units sold. Guild Wars is the award-winning and genre-defining series that is one of the most popular and successful online role-playing games in the industry.

To commemorate these milestones, ArenaNet has just released a major content update, including new quest content and extra storage options. Additional in-game birthday festivities will be available starting on April 28th, the official anniversary of the game.

Make a WORLD,
Not a Game.

Gratz and I'm still amazed that people would pay to play what is basically an offline (ie HEAVILY instanced) NOT Massively mutiplayer game.

If anything this demonstrates the value of a rich, deep, immersive, game world vs the kill-me-kill-you PvP toys offered by other vendors.

Go Go GW.

Uh, what?  They pay for the game and get the online play for free.  It's no different than any other single-player game out there.  There's no month fee.  Your comment makes no sense.

Uh, pay to play?

This isn't WoW, if that's what you're thinking!

We only buy the game (like WoW) but there's no MONTHLY FEES (unlike WoW and others)

so um you forget that not only is it PvP but PvE as well and it Vastly Differs WoW.

better read up on your games, before you post.

Thanks.

I've been playing Super Mario Galaxy lately, which is an offline, single player game.  I haven't figured out how to chat with guildies or group with other actual people as I commonly did in Guild Wars.  Nor have I figured out how to PvP against other actual players the way I could in Guild Wars.  Am I just missing something, or is Guild Wars a lot more online and multiplayer than your average offline single player game?  You seem to think it's not the latter.

It's not a true mmo, altough it's great.  Being all instanced =/= true mmo.

I work to play. I play to relax. ^_^ Go Blue Mage!

While it is true, this game isn't an MMO like FFXI or WoW, it isn't the only heavy instanced MMO to exist out there.  It is, imo, the best example of this kind of MMO (the other one that comes to my mind atm is Phantasy Star Universe).  I also think even amongst real MMO, this game is one of the better games.  It is the only one, that I know of, that gives your character (player characters) a voice.  Not only that, but the voice acting is pretty good.

i guess the six million copies sold makes it the 2 nd most  popular mmo after warcaft ? that no meagre achievment . i ve always ment to play it but never seam to have the time . the one thing i did nt like in it and its a small thing was that i could nt jump .

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers.

But AoC is all instanced and they class that as a 'true mmo'....0.o

But GW beats that hands down. Probibly one of the most fun I have had was a couple years pounding away at GW. Got the last expansion...just haven't had time to go threw it yet. Lets just hope GW2 is just as much fun!

You pay for the game once and play it online free with other ppl or your buddies (or alone if you like) in cooperative missions and quests and pvp plus regular updates/fixe, special events, clans/guilds, chat...  that is ONLINE game to me! So stop your whining.  It is an MMO .. it is just a different type of MMO that works!

Kill 1 in peace time and you are a murderer, kill 100 in war time and you are an hero!

They forgot to mention what they have done to people who bought gw when it was released and for some reason stopped playing until they forgot their passwords, and that they cannot retrieve them now because the system aint working for ages, forcing people to buy gw again if they want to play a game they already payed for and played.

Actually would be nice if the company hosting GW were investigated and prossecuted due to this.. its highly illegal, probably is breaking lots of market laws aswel.
