Yes it is WoW's fault. Why? In order to satisfy every Joe Schmoe they've dumbed it down so much it doesnt represent any challenge whatsoever. All it has become is a massive timesink, gear grind and nothing else. All you have to do is stand in line, give it time and of course sub money and you can be sure to achieve everything devs had prepared for you. If you want a challenge play EVE Online. Don't jump straight in though. Do your research first. Learn who you want to play, how to distribute stats, the lingo, etc. It's pretty unforgiving and hard to play it and it takes months to master it. It's also a massive timesink especially if you join the corporation (guild). Recently i've come across Chronicles of Spellborn which present something halfway between hardcore/casual gaming. It's got a very innovative skillbase combat system that takes a while to get used to, but once you learn how to construct skill decks you can challenge players even 5 levels above you in PvP and win. The downside is theres a lot of questing, although not holding your hand, bullcrap WoW style. You have to read and pay attention to directions and some of the quests are really funny. Also the game due to poor promo is still pretty empty (at least in EU). If youre a US player game is still in beta there but its free till lvl 7.9 and client is free so get downloading, if youre EU its pretty much the same but with the latest client and you can sub easily if you like it. If you want fun straight away with good PvP go WAR. But i warn you it looks and feels like WoW. Funny thing WoW is based on WARhammer's IP but WAR the game is a WoW lookalike with tad better graphics. Well, at least in WAR orcs are orks (with the K you see ;-) not some talking, green batty boys... On the negatives WAR isnt a seamless world, just a constant battle in different zones. Theres no downtime, just battles and missions. Since server mergers in EU my server is pretty busy all the time now so at least theres someone to fight with/against. If you hate questing, like siegeing, FFA PvP with loot, taking cities and pretty hard crafting play Lineage 2. Warning tho: no fun till you hit late 60's. And its an Asian grind fest so be prepared for two weeks of killing mobs to reach the level. On the plus side, its got a seamless world, looks ok if you like androgynous looking avatars. I'm not going to recommend AoC as i myself find the UI completely useless and game breaking. I agree it's the best looking game ever and worth checking out just for that, if you have the rig to take it. Game play is WoW linear, no seamless world, zoning and instancing galore, PvP is hard due to dumbass UI which is really a WoW style clicky but confounded with combinations of dir keys to unlock them. I'm myself waiting for Fallen Earth and it's the only MMO on the horizon that's got some potential

Keep your eyes on Jumpgate Evolution for PvP with a Joy-stick or mouse (I hear both are viable, just cannot play a space sim without a J-stick) and SWTOR for some good PvE.
Both have some really good ideas and differences from your standard MMO fare. I am sure there are others coming down the pipe but, I think these 2 are going to have a closer release date than others. Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them. |

For a true gamer there is never a lack of games to play. If MMO is getting stale then move on to single player or co-op like another poster suggested. Go back to an older title. Right now I'm back to good ol Diablo 2. It's one of those games i play for a month or two then quit for a year or two then return and play for a month again. This has been the perfect time to return for me since i have gotten cold over MMO's. If not that i have the choice of BF2 Dungeon Keeper 1+2 Kotor 1+2 ..some Civ 4 ..All games with good replay value. Not like CoD4 which i completed in 2 days never to return to again but that's another story. |

WoW is by far one of the worse mmorpg's on the market regardless of how big their subsriber base is. Yes there are that many stupid people out there and you can't fix stupid. I knew that game blew when it was just in beta testing which I was unfortunate enough to experience. If you want a good opinion I'll give you mine, whenever I speak people should stop and listen. 1. There are many more game genres than stupid mmorpg's to be played, i.e. singleplayer/co-op rpg's, FPS online/singleplayer, action and so on..... 2. MMORPG's are not the only game genre people need to play, you're not a true gamer if you do anyways. 3. Until companies stop developing cookie cutter mmorpg's copying off of everything else it's always gonna be a stale market. People are burned out on them it's either level/skilled based, kill/quest grind, PvP - script or non-script, (basically cheat or no cheat), idiotic/annoying community base, pets/mounts etc. etc. 4. AoC had great potential but still not only fell to the same ole sh!t but one of the most linear mmorpg's I have ever played. 5. My advice to you is stay away from this genre until a company can actually produce a product that has at least 1 unique attribute that other titles do not have. That or a whole new concept to this genre otherwise no matter what is spewing out of these game companies it's all the same crap wrapped up in a different color. 6. Some titles that you should research up on: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Fallen Earth, Earthrise and Star Trek Online These titles look promising but how may times have we heard that from the developer's mouth? I would keep a close eye on SW:TOR it looks the most promising and every true gamer knows Bioware's top notch reputation, for those that don't....take a bow you're a true FTARD.
you remind me of that guy on youtube talking about darkfall, who said you can only truly be legendary if your in beta.. and he also stated that he never dies in games.
he was also an idiot. |

It's not the fault of WoW that today's games suck. It's not the fault of any game infact. Rather it's our fault as gamers. We lap up every offering that comes out. We whine and complain about MMO(A) sucks as compared to MMO(B). Or how one game dumbed down the genre. Yet day in and day out we play them. We give them our monthly fee or pay for items in an item shop. As long as we as the players keep giving them our money they will continue to develop the same tired old excuses for games. Sure some of us have taken leave of a game or even the genre but overall the vast majority stay and play. For every WoW hater here on the boards I can find at least 10 that love it. Same could be said of almost any MMO out there. A game comes out and thousands upon thousands of us try out the beta/free trial. Even if some of us don't like it more will still stay and play even if only for the reason that it's "something different" So don't go blaming the games or the makers of games for having a lackluster/clone/stagnant product. Blame those that still give them their money every month. Or those that buy stuff from item shops. Those are the ones who keep the genre stagnant. If a game is making money then why would a company go out of thier way to change it? As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Originally posted by Sithos I agree for the most part but it is also the developers fault as well as the players. The developers are at fault for being greedy, they want to make the next WoW but guess what, there will not be a next WoW. WoW is one of those rare freak things that happen once in a life time. The developers need to realize this and start trying to make a game for gamers not for profit. Now I understand that MMO genre is about making a profit but it should also be about making a game for gamers. That is what these developers are missing, they do not care about the gamers anymore, they just care about the green in there pockets. That is a problem with alot of things in todays world not just the MMO genre. Edit: I am in the same boat as the OP but I am going to resub to EQ1 since I cannot find another game that is fun to play. At least EQ is fun to play. Sooner or Later |

Originally posted by TdogSkal I agree for the most part but it is also the developers fault as well as the players. It's actually a fairly simple concept. Blizzard found a giant crater-sized hole in the market and filled it to the brink. Other developers have a choice: 1. Try to nudge WoW out of that hole (LotR, WAR, AoC) 2. Try to find space in that hole that WoW has been unable to fill and fill it in to the best of thier abilities (Darkfall, PotBS) 3. Step outside the hole and look for another giant hole that you can fill in to the brink The brilliance of WoW is that while the game has mechanics and conventions that older games had, it just does not play like those games. It is a game play experience on a different level. The whole is bigger than the sum of the parts. The next 'big' MMORPG will have to think outside the box. It will have to find a way to create an overall game experience that is unique. It does not have to even that original but has to put enough of a twist on people's preconceptions that it will grab and hold them. |

The manner in which this guy - in just ONE simple sentence - gives HIS opinion on a game in which MILLIONS of people PAY their hard earned money every month/day just to play it is baffling. Of course the way he follows that sentence with 2 times the word "stupid" is more telling than any other "Ftard" (sic). So that leaves us with people telling things about other people. Instead of just playing games and have fun. So are you saying he should not be allow to express his opinion on a game just because others disagree with his opinion. I played WoW, I enjoyed it for a little bit but it got stale. IN MY OPINION it is on easy mode and that ruined any advancement my toon got. I would not say its the worst game but it is not for me and it would seem that some people in this gaming community feel the same way. Personally I am sick of doing pointless quests, the solo and every now again group quest grind got boring to me and mindless solo grinding is not fun to me and that is my issue, nobody else wants to group in these new games because its faster to grind quest solo. Again I am generalizing. Generally speaking most people choose to solo quest grind because its faster. I also would like to see a company release a game with the full feature list ready for release, seems like forever ago any MMO released ready to play. EVE? maybe. WoW was going to have hero classes at release and only one has released? So another smart move by blizzard, make the fanbase buy each hero class with a new expansion. Sooner or Later |
