Ok, i was very hyped about this game when i first saw it. The pvp system and the looting system and i loved how it was a sandbox MMO. I mean this game looked like it was gonna be sweet. Well i got on the forums and i found out that this game is not what it first apeared to be.

This game will have no /tell system over long distances( you can have guild chat channels, but only after you purchase the upgrade on your guildstone and you can /tell people only in your immediate area), no global chat, no minimap and possibly no compass, you will have to buy maps and update them because the world will constantly be being discovered, which means you dont get a world map with the outlines of the continents OR an icon that tells you where you are, HUH!?!?! Which means you have to find out where you are depending on landmarks and your maps (which 'may  not be 'accurate' says a dev.). In order to get a minimap, you will have advance in magic to get awarness spells and crap. Ok...wow, i dont know about you but my interest in this game has been all but  obliterated. This game seems to be geared almost completely toward the role-player and the developers seemed to have no interest in the casual gamer. This disapointed me extremely =(.

I find it very sad that this company would throw away such a great oppurtunity for the sake of realism and roleplayers, when the great majority of players are not roleplayers. So now you know.

Tried: EvE, DnD Online, LotRO, WAR, AoC,
Played: UO, SWG(pre-cu), GuildWars, FFXI, WoW
Liked: UO, SWG, GuildWars
Disliked: WoW, FFXI

This actually made me interested in the game, and i am neither a roleplayer nor very realismcraving.

Suddenly after reading your post, I come to think that sounds like a very decent game. Reasoning : in the setting that it has, you don't have a cellphone to "speak" therefore send tells, if you can acquire a magic orb or something though sounds solid enough. Sounds to me very much like a sandbox as you originally said.

Btw you don't have to be a roleplayer to see the realism in game. And as you describe it all i have to say is /bump at this game!

What are you talking about! That sounds AMAZING!!!

Now if only they would stick to this and not dumb it down...but there's slim chance of that happening

Wow.. I am with these guys... this makes me want to play MO soo bad... finally a game that doesn't cater to the masses and follow the same setup every other game follows. I cannot wait to get into this game.

Proof that MMO players are total nut cases. No global chat? the same feature if goes missing in other MMO you guys make such a big deal about it, but i guess its ok for Mortal Online not to implement it? why double standards? or just sheep mentality here?

Good or bad game i don't know but not implementing global chat is really a stupid idea. Considering how much heat recent MMO's has to take when this feature is missing at launch, for example WAR. But i guess its just COOL for MO not to have it. You people are such sheeps.

It sounds amazing.

Finally exploring will be a real proffesion. Travel will actually mean something. You will hire guides, and get lost.....talk about adventures : )

(and adventures mean content = more playtime)

I agree completely. I prefer wurms system of having a compass as your only ingame method of assisted travel than a full map and mini map. You actually have the sense that you are exploring something and you need to pay attention in order to do so without getting lost and this sounds even better, being able to make maps etc.

I think you're all missing the point, I think the OP means casual players as in people who would only play a few hours a week and like to talk to friends and stuff with the little time they play, and don't want to spend all their time grinding for necessities pretty much all other games provide.  I too am slowly losing my desire to play this game, with the cocky mods on the official forums to the "revolutionary" ideas that will cut a lot of casual players (including myself) out. I for one don't want to have to go exploring for 3 hours before finding where I need to be, and then need to go exploring again to get back. Shastra is right though, any other game would have been a failure from the start if one day they announced they were removing global chat and long range pms, why not this one?

Edit: about the whole "no cellphone" thing, it's supposed to be a completely made up fantasy world. Give everyone a magical stone that let's them communicate or something, don't remove half of the interactivity between players.

I think the OP assumes a little too much.

Why would casual players be impaired by the loss of a minimap and global chat?

You can still talk to your friends, there will simply be restrictions to it in-game if you're not anywhere near eachother. And really, if you're playing with people you know, you should be using ventrilo or teamspeak anyway =)

We'll see how MO pulls it off. It sounds like they're trying to remove a lot of the handholding from their game.

the uproar about aoc, and war chats, was that big, that i doubt this will work out well for them,

you are fast to forget past failures, and hail future features based on huge failures..

This actually sounds like real exploring. Real work to find things. btw i think you may have a mis-understanding of sandbox. I love no global barrens chat lol. Damn u mean this will not mimic wow? It may actually be similar to original mmos from pre 2004? I am actually really interested now if this is all true. I might even be able to handle the fp view to try this concept.

I'm not sure if the lack of chat options is a good idea or not.  As someone else said, many guilds will get around it anyway by using VOIP.  So the real impact of restricting text chat will be to make voice chat even more of a requirement.  For people who don't use voice chat the world might feel like a very lonely place which is probably not a good thing in a MMO.

The lack of minimaps I love.  Maybe it's just me but I've noticed something strange while playing some games with minimaps: I spend more time looking at the minimap than I spend looking at the world.  There have been times when I've run through a large chunk of a game world, navigating with the minimap, and then suddenly realized that I have only a vague idea what the area I just ran through looks like because I was mostly watching the little blips on the minimap.

It's kind of messed up to think that game makers have been pushing the graphics envelope more than anything else for all these years and then find a way to send us back to the begining of video gaming by having us watch single pixels moving around on a minimap.  Of course I know I could simply not look at the minimap but like all self imposed restrictions you end up feeling like an idiot if you don't do it because it's easier and it's right there to use.

A lot of what I've read about MO sounds pretty good (which doesn't necessarily mean that it WILL be good).  I've already found the flaw (in my opinion) that will stop me from playing it but good luck to those of you who do.

Do you have any sources for that? I know about the map and so forth, but I think it would be a really stupid idea to not have /tells. People will just use third party software for it and you've created a whole new problem with people having to switch out of the game to speak. Those who follow the "rules" would just be stuck with running around the world trying to find their friends for hours... something that just takes the fun out of it. Realism is all fine and dandy as long as it doesn't make the game a drag... So, sources please?

I think it is unwise to make any assumptions before at least Beta. Good Betas are known to make or break games, so let's see how the developers balance out any shortcomings of -otherwise- interesting features on paper.

Not having global chat had NOTHING to do with WAR or AOC's success or failure.  I played both of them, several months after launch and it was a very small issure that I had absolutely no problem with.  Sure, it was annoying at times.. but not a game breaker by any means.

Some of you guys need to understand that they are actually making a game that breaks the mold.  They are not only making it for the RP hardcore crowd, but they are making a game that they want to make.. not something the higher ups are pushing on them.  And do you forget?  EVERYONE will have to pay attention to where they are, where they are going.. a compass to find your direction.. buy or make your own maps.   Not just you.   There will be plenty of landmarks in this type of setting.

Does anyone remember LoTRO?  In that forest?  I have NEVER been lost in any game and that game had a minimap!!!  And it was awesome!  Talk about immersion.  Stop knocking features that you know NOTHING about.  That's why you get labeled a troll.  You are just spewing random garbage with no backing.
