I am looking for an mmog, but not a persistant massive world. I am looking for a game that works using a lobby (or lobbies), and many player-created instances. Take for example Diablo 2. It is not a world that supports 1000 players, but players can create an instance of the game and people can join.

I want dungeon running, team work, character advancement, and item/loot. Each class (healer, tank, dps) must play their role.

Graphics: 2D, 2.5D, 3D. Not text. Browser is ok if it has images.

The ideal game:

A game that has 1 or more chat lobbies. Tank, healer, and dps. Player can create an instance and wait for others to join, then start the game when everyone is ready. The group must work together to advance through the instance. Loot from bosses.

Ive never heard of any game like this, but it MUST be MMOG, IE character and game is on a secure server, not on player's computers. And all players can interact through the lobby (or the lobby they are in)

Sorry buddy, never heard of anything like this. If you find it, post back and let me know, something like this would be good for casual days.

Try Neverwinter Nights. I played it a long while back and I loved it. There's a great community too.

What you are looking for is not a MMOG.

You want something like Guild Wars which isn't massive because it's instanced with a lobby zone.

Even the developers for such games call them CPORGs, cooperative online rather than massive multiplayer.

Basically CPORG is a fancy name for a single box game with multiplayer option.

Sounds like what I want diablo 3 to be like.  I don't think this type of game exists yet.  If it does though, I hope someone posts it here :D

you sure you're not thinking of CORPG?   Competitive Online RPG - http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/CORPG

Guild Wars certainly IS massive.  It's instanced but brings a massive amount of people together to play in a virtual world.  This is different from something like battle.net because of the idea of a world to interact rather than text chat rooms.  The overall feel is very different between the two.

Then again, I remember this being a huge argument when GW came out, and I'm not interested in arguing my point further.  I consider GW an MMO even if it's not the typical MMO we're used to.  Just like I'll consider Huxley an MMO.  I will not consider diablo 3 an MMO because it will use battle.net to be the interface for creating games, rather than a game world that many people can meet in and naturally wander into the next area.  The non-seemlessness of GW does not break the MMO feel for me like battle.net does for d2.

If I'm remembering correctly, EQ2 also has different instances of the same area, channels or whatnot.  So you could be in area 1 channel 5, switch to area 1 channel 6, be in the same exact area but with different people.  If that's not how EQ2 was, then I'm forgetting which game was like that.  That would be considered an MMO even though it took an instances approach, just like I'd consider GW an MMO even though it took an even more instances approach.

My first thought would have been Guild Wars as well, but after reading the OP it mentioned player created instances. Guild Wars doesn't have anything player created in it, but it would meet all of the other requirements. I actually didn't play GW for very long because i didn't enjoy all of the instancing in the game. I prefer a much more open game, and being able to actually find other people exploring the wilderness.

I have not played Neverwinter Nights, but i know it has a lot of player created content and allows people to basically be a dungeon master. My ex GF loved the game... hmmm she was a little crazy though, but I still think it would be a good game to give a try.

Good luck finding the perfect game.

These three are Lobby based, with 4-player team instances, but they can be soloed for the most part if you choose too!

  • Phantasy Star Online
  • Phantasy Star: Blue Burst
  • Phantasy Star: Universe

Huge world, way more options and better than Diablo IMO, enemies scale to highest level character in the room:

  • Sacred
  • Sacred II

...and of course:

  • Diablo
  • Diablo II

Something I just found:

Exteel isn't too bad, but it doesn't have "classes" as much. It depends on your loot and what specific weapons you have. Some weapons heal, etc. www.exteel.com

You can also try MangaFighter. It has classes, but a little on the "children game" side, so not too many complicated things, such as stats or whatnot. www.mangafighter.gamescampus.com

Dungeon Party was already recommended above; that seems pretty close to what you're after.

And finally, Team Fortress 2. Not really "exactly" what you may of had in mind (it's a first person shooter), but definetely something to have a look at. Pretty good. www.teamfortress.com

I would also say Guild Wars, you can get a trial of it on their site. It came out back in '05 but in my opinion it still has one of the best graphics and sound for the PC. It's a absolutly stunning game in that regard. Only bad side to the game is if you arnt into the PvP aspect of the game, you may find yourself bored after a couple months. No new PvE content and the highest level is 20. The abilities by your profession can make it very interesting. Oh, and it has nearly all the stuff you asked for lol.

s'funny cuz almost everything that you described is in Guild Wars

its the game that i've been playing the most, and its turning 4 years this april, but still very much populated. poeple say that its gameplay is more like Diablo than WoW. not surprisingly, cuz GW's developers made Diablo and Battle.net

it's fully instanced, with towns & outposts as hubs to chat & sell stuff, got dungeons and RPG type missions

you may want to buy the GuildWarsTrilogy cuz it contains all 3 campaigns and a real steal to boot. check out my gallery too to see its awesome graphics.

*** did i mention it doesnt have a monthly subscription? ;)

Guild Wars sounds as close as you're gonna get right now. I personally found it boring, but others like it. It drove me nuts not to be able to step over a mound of dirt as a shortcut, but instead have to go around the dirt to stay on the predefined quest path....Drove me bonkers! But it is totally instanced with lobby like towns.

I was stupid enough to buy Sacred II recently, as I was desparate for a hardcore-mode DIablo-like game.

The enemy scaling feature was what made me uninstall it after a few days. For me this is a game killer. Really, what is the point in exploring an entire map, only to find that mobs on the other side of the world are exactly the same level as me, just like the ones 30 feet from my starting point?

It totally removes any good reason to explore, it removes any danger and excitement. Utterly boring waste of money.

Personally i would suggest Lunia online, it's basically  a 3d beat 'em up with combos. It's not room based, but it is instanced, you make a party in town and go on quests, it works with different stages a little like a platformer. I haven't played much but it's pretty fun.

No one suggested D&D Online yet?!

The shared areas aren't exactly a chat room, but they serve the same purpose. Its instanced, has the best graphics on the market, best character development, best dungeons. Its an amazing game.

Guild Wars, Dungeon Runners, and Exteel seem like games you might want to check out with a few friends and see how you like them.

Guild Wars is very heavily instanced, to the degree that all combat is in instances.  You could think of the towns as kind of being like lobbies, as it sticks everyone on a particular server type (e.g., American servers, as opposed to Korean or French European) in the same town in the same spot to be easy to find each other, unless it overflows a district, in which case it makes more and lets you transfer between them in a few clicks.

The ten different classes in Guild Wars do play different roles, but it's not the standard tank/healer/damage dealer setup with the standard aggro system and idiotic AI.  Mobs are smarter than that, and will go after someone just because they think they can kill him quickly.

Guild Wars is also very light on level grinding and gearing up.  You get to max level and perfect gear pretty quickly, with most of the content left for you to do after that.  If you're looking for a level grinder that takes forever to get anywhere, Guild Wars isn't it.
