Above me: butthurt hacker qqing because his "out of the box" exploits are getting proper treatment. Cheaters in mmos are the lowest form of life.

Like so many Darkfall fans you miss the point.  Hacker banning? Great.  Banning someone because of their name? Lame.  You can't just assume that because someone has a screwy name, that they are automatically a hacker.  What happened to investigating?  I guess that got tossed out in favor of being lazy.  So what you don't like someones name, that's no reason to ban them.  If they are cheating then yes ban them.  If GM's have so much trouble with a players name it is because the game is piss poor condition.

Assuming everyone with a weird name to be a hacker/exploiting, is just the height of stupidity.  Banning people without proving they are actually hacking/exploiting based off their name alone, is beyond moronic.  It's the lazy mans way out of putting serious effort into rounding up and banning hackers.

No different than a police officer assuming someone is guilty because of the ethnic background, or those witch hunts that went on back in the earlier parts of mans history.

Permanent ban or deleting a toon seems a bit harsh.  In many games it is difficult to find a unique allowed name, and after numerous unsuccessful attempts you may chose a name that is not in character out of frustration.

However, names that are used as an exploit is another matter.  Some fonts do not clearly distinguish between a capital letter "i", the number "1", and lower case "L".  So it may not be possible to tell what an actual name is when it consists of a string like "lIl1lI".  If this gives a player an advantage, it is an exploit and a warning or ban may be appropriate.

One of the main reasons Im reserved about playing an FFA pvp mmo is because of the 10-17 year old griefers who make names like that and get their rocks off ganking people just for a laugh.

After they get banned they act like they were for no reason. Im sorry you hate your father or get bullied at school.

They just enjoy seeing people get really pissed off and its me some of the time.

I probably will play it in a couple months and break my keyboard a couple times.

Asheron's Call Darktide and Halo are the only games that cause shattered keyboards and Darkfall seems like the 3rd.

Cant wait lol

Well... if you don't like that type of action, these fanboys will call you a "carebear" probably something a little kid came up with... But seriously, thats one reason not to play FFA because the little kids that got beat up in school play this game to get their revenge...

Accually the term "Carebear" comes from the Care Bears series, and yes the series is for little kids, I used to watch it :P

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

2. Anyone named iLLiLLi ( IllIllI ) has chosen that name to be a jerk, period.
I have seen it in many games, exploiters and cheaters use these names to make it very hard to report them effectively i.e Planetside.
3. Why didn't they foresee this nonsense by enforcing a software naming policy?
4. Good for them.

So permanently banning people for having these names and NOT allowing them to change their name instead is fine with you?  wtf?

of course. you'd only name your char that way if you were a dumbass kid. the fewer dumbasses in the game the better.

No! This is the game make for morons by morons. Let the morons, jerks, hackers, and needy children stay in this game as long as possible. The longer they are playing this game, the less time they have to play a game where they can bother normal people.

Reading what you say here, and looking at your avatar and your signature images, I have come to the conclusion that you are a terrible person. I think you are one of the people who makes names like this for the very reason Aventurine is putting a stop to it. If you did something like that, you did it because you are a bad person, and having to delete your character is a light punishment to my mind. If it were up to me, I would ban you just for having the name to start with, without warning.

Of course, I'd probably have a software naming policy. And a better terms of use.

Jimmy99 is one of the harshest critics about this game. He constantly QQ's "This is wrong, that is wrong. Why don't they fix this, why don't they fix that, waaa waaa waaa". Some of what he says IS rightly justified, imo. But this isn't one of them, and he doesn't even play the game, lol. So his opinion on what needs to be fixed first and in what order is just as important as say- an aboriginal Bushman. Carries no weight. I don't play the game either so same as mine. The only weight carried is by the people subbed to Darkfall and they could give two flying farts about this issue. Unless you and Jimmy are reading tons of forum threads about this elsewhere. If you can show that there is a huge demand in customer wishes for this, then you are right. Otherwise, you are just as mistaken in priority as he is.

If you notice, 99% of my criticism ( or QQing as you call it) is pointed towards the company, not the game. I barely say anything about the game because
a) I dont play it
b) I kinda like the idea behind it (it reminds me of Planetside in a fantasy settings)
Its too easy to take something that someone said and you doing agree with, label it as trolling,QQing or what have you. But you forget, that criticism, if its a legit one backed up with facts or logical arguments, will not disappear in the thin air just because you choose to ignore it.

Please, stop with the arguments "You have to play the game in order to say anything good or bad about it". With that logic, you cannot speak in defense of someone who is getting beaten up. Do you actually believe in what you are saying?

Naming policy has to be down there with new haircuts for character models. It's stupid to focus on something this trivial. Yes, trivial. If you have a boat (Darkfall) with a buncha of holes all different sizes, in order to keep the boat from sinking do you fix the small holes first? No sane person (company) would. They would shore up the largest holes first then as they made headway they work on the smaller ones. At this stage of this game's development less than two months out from official launch and limited manpower, all you CAN do at this time is iceberg tip shavings. Don't take on the whole iceberg. Trust me, if Aventurine announced they were pulling some techs off of fixing gameplay issues to fix... this, there would REALLY be a mutiny and mass exodus of subscriptions, and Jimmy would be the first one saying how stupid Aventurine is for doing this first. Dunno how you and he cannot see that.

I work as a programmer for a small telecommunications company. Since we are also small company, we are understaffed and seems like we never have enough budged. Bugs are common, so are human errors. But... hers a big but: we NEVER... EVER.. punish our clients for our mistakes! This is what AV is doing. They had a bug in their code that allowed to create user accounts with short names. They fixed it but those players were unable to login into their accounts to resubscry or cancel. They closed 2 tickets without ANY communications. They DEMANDED to change names of players they deem "confusing" or get banned. This is so ambiguous that any name could potencially be confusing.

Again, poor coding - thats kinda OK, it happens. Making paying customers suffer for it - UNACCEPTABLE in any business.

If anyone were to actually quit over something as silly as a naming policy, it would be less than 1% probably. Know why? Because most of us normal folks use somewhat normal names even if they are corny or stupid. And the vast majority of people care whether they are having fun playing any game; they could care less that !l!l!l!l!l!l!l got permabanned, lol. These guys clearly have a problem they have to hide, not getting properly reported. We all know DF has a limited supply of technical people. They've apparently had this problem since Day 1 ten years ago (?). So why on earth would someone ask them to prioritize names? That's just plain batshit stupid.

Who are you to judge my name? What if my name is IlIlIlIlIl - you have no right to tell me what to name my character. That name is not offending anyone, its not racist, its not sexist, its neither -ist or -phobic. If I want to make a stupid name like that - then I will.

But, this whole thing is not about the naming. This is an issue of how they are handling this. This is how they handled it so far:

PROBLEM: confusing names wont let report hackers for GMs or let GMs ban them with ease.
SOLUTION: tell everyone with "confiusing" name to delete their character or be banned.

This is how it should of been:
SOLUTION:
-a simple CTRL+C shortcut copies the name of your current target into a buffer, thus allowing you to paste their names into a message
- have a '%t' command that most MMOs already have, which basically paste your current target's name into chat
- GM's have the ability to see not only character names, but also their IDs. All characters are stored in database, thus each has a unique ID number associated with it. IDs are easier to see, easier to remember and are less likely to casue a typo.

I agree with you on this one Jimmy.

You do not punish the end-user for your lack of defensive coding.

There is a naming policy outlined in the contract you sign every time you load the game, if you were stupid enough not to follow it, then you deserve to have to reroll. If you made some kind of idiotic attempt to confuse people with IIllIIllII as a character name, then you deserve to have to reroll as well.

No, it wasn't sarcastic. Anyone with a brain in their head knows they are bound by the terms they agree to when they use a software product. Ignorance of the licensing terms does not absolve you from responsibility -- or any punishment due to your inability to know what you agreed to, for that matter.

EDIT: typo.

Please, please for the love of god refrain from posting until you get some proper education on the subject matter.

The contract you sign right when you join the game explains the rules for naming the character.  It's been there since beta. If you're too stupid to read a contract before you sign it, then that's your fault.

Here's a thought:  A company has 12 employees, two of the employees decide to right "**** You" on their name tags that publicly represent the company.   Should the company  A) give the empolyees new nametags telling them the previous ones were inappropriate   OR  B) fire the employees and leave room for new ones in their company?   Ya, I thought B was right too.

That's just how it is for Darkfall, or any other MMORPG game.  It's not just the product that represents the game, but also the community that plays it and makes up the population.  If the community is full of asshats, it'll get a bad reputation and a bad point of view.   However, when a company takes a stand and removes the asshats, then the potential customers see this as a better community to join.

Also, this tells how their customer service works.  Some companies do nothing against bad names, horrible players (those that hack, cheat, and/or total dicks), or help the players that need it.  With this kind of responce just against bad names, I can't help but think that their in-game support is atleast 2x better than most MMOs (which have a 72hr wait time for GMs/CSRs).

Big difference with people who BUY THE GAME and people who WORK FOR THE COMPANY...

This is how their customer service works...?  Perm banning people because they don't know how to code their game... I would rather have a competent customer support that would take 72 hours than one that bans people for no reason...

You do know that they are banning people just to be able to sell more accounts because it frees up space right?  Get it?

in before yet more crying from the carebear crowd.

Carebear?  Is that your defense?  Are you that ignorant?

So they have no clue how to code their shitty game so they start banning people instead of allowing them to change their names.. wtf are you people smoking?

I logged in for the first time in ...roughly 9 months just to comment on this very sad post.

Get it?

Don't worry, prow can move on to other games soon enough. However, while is conspiracy theory probably isn't true, the meat of this thread is. And that's not whether names like Illlililil or whatever are right, or whether or not they're all hackers, etc. It's that Aventurine is being a bunch of dumbasses for perma-banning such names (or politely telling the user to delete their character) instead of giving warnings or using another more standard form of punishment, just in case there's an innocent thrown somewhere in there who is not a hacker.

Inquisition: "Kill them all, let God purge the innocent from the flames".

Darkfall: "Ban them all...laugh because they can't come back."

Surprisingly, prow is also right about the flaws of Siphaed's example. When you buy a product, it's different than being an employee of a company. Darkfall already has a community image of a bunch of nerdy asshats running around killing each other, and nothing will change that.
