About once every 6 months I come in here and ask the same question, and look forward to the answers.

Is there any games out or coming out soon that have skill based systems like Ultima Online, Asherons Call, SWG, or even (the unfortunately cancelled) Wish.

Do you mean the skill of the player, or the "you have to level lots of different things separately" system that is sometimes ham-handedly called "skill based"?

Well, unless you know of a game that completely automates everything for you, then it should be pretty obvious that I'm not asking for a game that requires player skill.

But I'm pretty sure you were just trying to start an argument.

If you are not asking for a game that requires player skill, what skill are you asking for?  A game in which your character's ability is measured in skill levels instead of character levels?  Oh so instead of saying you are a lvl 24 hunter, you are now known as hunter mr X with bow skill lvl 12, longshot skill level 8, close combat skill lvl 4 and ambush skill lvl 2.  Hmm nice.

So your total character lvl is 12+8+4+2.  Nice game.

Darkfall was supposed to be that game, but its plagued with underfunding and was released to early.

Maybe wait for Earthrise or Mortal Online.

Not entirely trying to start an argument.. But he presented the question in a terrible way...

There are games that require more player skill to be good at.  But I'll assume you mean a game that has a skill based "class" system.

I believe Darkfall is skill-based.. It's also hard to get into because they can only sell a limited amount of accounts until they get multiple stable servers.

I think everyone talks about Mortal Online like it's Darkfall except better/less disappointing.  Darkfall doesn't have the best performance right now, but the concept is good from what I can tell.  A lot like UO, but that's what we all say whenever a new "hardcore pvp" game comes out.

Sandbox is a popular term for what the OP was asking about.

DF is not really skill based, you have skills in steps of 25, 50, 75.  You can call skill lvl 25 = level 1, skill level 50=level 2.  Moving up from skill level 4 to 5 is just miniding.

Since there seems to be some confusion regarding "skill based", despite me giving examples and despite this being a freaking MMO website. Let me try to explain.

A skill based MMO = you pick your own skills and develop them.

A class based MMO = you pick a class and level the class and the skills you are given.

If you're going to refer to a system in which you have to level a bunch of independent things as "skill-based", then what do you call a game with a substantial emphasis on the skill of the player?

I realize that the terminology is used by a number of players, but it's disastrously named.  It's as if whoever named it that wanted to insist that the skill of the player could not and should not matter, so wording that could refer to that needs to be diverted to mean something else--and indeed, nearly the opposite of it.

Well the hidden world by FunCom is supposed to be skill based but it can take years before we see it.

A game without levels or classes is called a class-less, level-less system.  Like the new game Secret World.

If you need to level up skills you could call it skill based. But I have played game that has classes and levels and you level skills.

So you really just need to be specific and just spell it out.

If you want to try come class-less skill leveling single player games, Fallout 3 and Oblivion – both rock.

Check out a game called Ryzom, www.ryzom.com, sandbox type of game with an ever changing world shaped by the players.  It is f2p for now but going to be going back to p2p soon so check it out now while you still can.  It's got a player based economy, crafting that matters, and you level skills.  It is a skill tree sort of style though, like level your magic skill to 20, then once to 20 it branches to offensive and defensive magic, level on of those to 50 and then branches again, all the way to 250 i believe.  It is like that with harvesting, crafting, fighting, and magic.  I really like the game myself so check it out.

I like the term classless. Yeah... no more misunderstandings. This should be made official.
