I will still search and fight the good fight until I find the game to own all games. |
I have a friend in EvE that feels that women do not and would not like EvE. I was wondering if that was true.

eve -- too complicated for women? seriously, you put that as a female-only option?
keep in mind, hundreds of eve players do not frequent this forum. matter of fact, right now there's 173 registered folks and 1013 guests total on this site. that number MIGHT double during primetime and it's for the entire site, not just this forum.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please? |

...I'm sorry, but I do not understand your point. I am simply trying to find out if my friend's opinion is correct based on the opinion of the women of this site. Currently Playing: Aion |

The author is probably just hoping to get an indication that there are women in this game, then decide to play it based on the results. Just a horny guy, no doubt. A dyslexic man walked into a bra. |

I dont know any women that even like Sci Fi at all.......I seriously doubt most women would like Ee because they are playing a space ship instead of a person and the total barbaric style of the game probably would not appeal to many either.....I'm sure tehre are a few that play but I doubt very many. |

Based on the fact that I know a lot of people who play with their husband or wife, there are a lot of female eve players. However, I think most of the people are males, based on the fact that's it's so slow paced, and - at least this is what people tell me, I've never seen it that way - a spreadsheet geeks wet dream. |

I think that is a flawed assesment based on peoples experiances, I know very many women that like mmo's and sci-fi stuff, the problem is most of those girls are not found in the places guys usually hang out, trust me I had to change where I looked to find girls that liked me and that I liked. Now personally I do not like eve, it's to clumsy to understand at first, then it's just a sand box after it. (warning opinions may vary person to person). In the end you gota get outa your comfort zone to meet people, yes there are girls out there in every mmo, many of them are infact attractive and this is a way to vent. Some simply love gameing and have great personality and are cool to hang out with. The usual way to tell if it's a guy behind the wheels is listen to how a toon talks in game. Girls are a sizeable lot different that guys when they play, though my ex had a bad tendancy to constantly ask for me to level her toon. |

I used to play EvE a couple years back.. its funny cause one of those I used to play with was a homewife.. oh ye there were a teenager gal too.. but its hard to say from my experiences how big the female community is but EvE ladies exist.. and well I remembered asking why they play and she told me it was relaxed, she could chat and browse web.. it also had a great community. I left who knows she might still be playing :)

Actually, I think people are being way too hard on the OP. His question has merit. For instance, I'm sure that statistically there are women who play eve. However, every single video I've seen with devs and players asking them questions there seem to be mostly men. I say mostly because I can only remember seeing men in the videos. To that end, now that the op brings it up, I don't remember seeing anyone stating they were female who played the game. I don't think that it has anything at all with the idea that the game is too complicated for women if this is the case but might have more to do with taste.

There's too much testosterone e-peening that goes on in Eve. That and being stuck in a ship 100% of the time. I tried the game again for the 3rd or 4th time but I'm letting my subscription end this month. |

I think its more along the lines of No Wussys allowed. Ten people who speak make more noise than ten thousand who are silent. |

I don't know about Eve, but I have met a lot of women playing Hellgate, D&D Stormreach, some of which are in my guild. From the previous posts however, it seems as though Eve might be more a male oriented experience, though I'm not to sure why that phenomenon is. Perhaps they should change it to Steve online? Ok, first of, to you sir *resists my normal reaction of saying something smartass*, you ARE right about one thing...I am a horny guy. But no worries, my wife takes full care of that. Now to the point of the thread... I find two things interesting: First of all, everyone who posted, save 1, it seems, is male. Second of all, those that actually seemed to look at the issue of the thread critically, seemed to narrow all of the available options of the poll down to one; the game being too complicated for women. And that is interesting because that is where the idea of the post came from. I have a good female friend from LotRo who I did basically everything with in that game. She was the first person I talked to in the game, and helped me immensely with crafting and gear, etc. She seems very intelligent and game savvy. So when I went off to try EvE, after about the first 2 hours, I knew I was going to really like this game. I met a guy there that was great help; helped me with some starter money, gave me some ideas on how to fit my first new ship, and was there to answer any questions I had. After the tutorials and a few questions to him, I had the concept of the mechanics of the game down, and I could pretty much figure everything else out. So I invited my female friend from LotRo to come play with me...maybe she would really like the game too because she is into sci-fi. She gets in and seems to really like the game, but simply can not understand anything about it. Even after doing the tutorials and me answer God knows how many questions and my male friend I met in EvE doing the same, she still could not figure out how to buy something on the market on her own without...and barely with help. So my male friend made the statement that EvE is not for women because it is too complicated and they do not want to figure it out. I want to know from the female perspective, if this is the case or not. Currently Playing: Aion |

I saw a dev post on the official EvE forums about a year ago that said EvE's population was 98% male. Given my own in-game experiences this seems about right. I can think of a number of reasons for this. In general...

I played Eve for several months before I became bored with it. I never joined a corp though, that may have added to being bored. I never felt it was too complicated. It takes a lot of patience and a lot more reading. Also, if you pay attention to the rookie chat, many of your questions will be asked / answered by people there. Oddly enough when I told my ex I was playing Eve, he said that the game was too complicated and way too boring for him. ( Actually, I think his words were that he would have to scratch his own eyes out if he had to play one more minute, lol. ) Personally, I've known quite a few women that were into sci-fi. Not many of them went to sci-fi conventions or visit online forums. Heck, I knew one girl that was president of the Star Trek club at her college. As to the option that "the game was just too complicated" as an option, it's not that it's too complicated, but rather some people don't have enough patience to learn it no matter what their gender is. |

In that case I wouldn't agree. There are female physicists and computer scientists and plenty of women at MIT here in Cambridge. I would probably say that anything a woman wants to figure out she can given her natural talents and abilities. Meaning that if she has the inclination to be a computer scientists or mathmetician she can. I am a man and there is no way I could do that as my talent and inclinations reside elsewhere. what might be more to the truth is that women (and this is a generalization) need some sort of other type of input/reason in order for them to "engage" so to speak. In your example, I think the real issue is that the game just didn't appeal to her and she was just sort of doing a cursory glance at what she needed to do. she probably wasn't interested. I know I do the same thing when something doesn't appeal to me. Women are every bit as smart and able to deal with complicated things as men. but there needs to be something different in order for them to relate to certain things. I would say that over my life I have seen many groups of women interact together and it does seem different than how men interact together. They want the same things as men but they want to go about it differently. But I have known women who were very organized in their thought and could easily handle eve. However, knowing them, I don't think they would get into eve as it seems too impersonal and to be honest, a bit to picayune with its gameplay. |

how many guys put an answer at random, so they could see the poll results?

I think the number of women in-game is a lot higher than people think. Most women, however, probably don't let people know that they are female in real life, due to the sheer amount of harrassment they might get in-game because of it. I know a female who loves EVE/PvP, but she isn't playing at the moment. There was also a woman in EVE University that did classes for new players over voice chat. |
