Star Wars Fans dont want this game to compete with/kill/steal players from WoW. Star Wars fans are looking for an mmorpg to relive the "Greatest Story Ever Told: Yours". We want a star wars universe, we want good and functional gameplay, we want that magic which the old SWG had (but not SWG itself), we want the sci-fi, we want the space action, we want the conflict.
We DON'T want a WoW killer, we DON'T want to replace WoW, we DON'T want a fantasy setting, and we DON'T want to be #1.

Seriously people everyone needs to chill out about WoW, not everything needs to be compaired to WoW, I would like to bring to your attention that in wow the stroy line is the same no matter what character/class/race you roll. The Alliance and Horde are all mirriors of each other. Now you might say that this brings balance to the game but seriously it gets boring and fast once you notice how non existant WoW storyline is, I mean come on how can you enjoy a story line thats not there at least the TOR offers different stroy lines for each class and how can you not like star wars, you cant go wrong with a starwars story line and atleat more people can relate to the story from the books and movies and lets not forget that you guys are also trying to compair a starwars game ( Futuristic ) with WoW's midevil ( Fantacy ) |

Well, War maybe but definitely not Eve ; ) But I see what you are saying, that since WoW player are quite prevalent and since this game might appeal to a good many of them, that they are going to try it and find that the combat is not to their liking. |

As much as I agree with you, another thing is TOR people (my self mostly) don't want WoW subscribers, you know why? They are terrible, the WoW community is terrible! Every WoW player out there can keep playing WoW till the end of time; we don't need them at all. I played WoW for awhile and for the most part the game is ok but the community is the reason I left. There is something about WoW that turns good people into asshats, don't know why but it's true. |

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what WOW players want. If the TOR developers were going after that market, they would have made their game more like WOW 2.0, but it is anything but that. Their game mechanics are completely different than WOW, leading me to believe they are counting on pulling in new players to the genre, or people that are looking for an experience different than WOW.
I think where WOW is concerned, the fact they have only released 2 expansions is gonna hurt them though. People get bored and start looking for something new. And with the recent crop of mmo failures, I think everyone in the genre is primed to try the next big thing. So I would expect huge initial box sales. However, whether or not they will retain those numbers will hinge on how well they integrate core mechanics, like combat...like the companion system...like grouping, socializing, crafting, etc. If this game comes across as a single player game with some coop I would expect there to be a lot of player turn over and not to cohesive of a community, which is never a good thing for an 'mmo'. |

Well interesting enough I wrote an article that pertains to this perfectly :). The two biggest events of 2009 and 2010 will be these. Blizzard rules the world: Blizzard will announce a new project. It will not be WoWII but a stand alone project that they expect to basically take over the world with. You see, WoW only got 11,000,000 subscribers. That is far, far too few for what this gaming giant has planned. They intend on having 11,000,000,000 subscribers for the next game. I know what your thinking, Hey Snafudamis there are only 6,000,000,000 people in the world where are the other 5,000,000,000 going to come from?. Well Blizzard has planned for that. The project will come in two stages. In the first stage they will announce they have been cloning gamers for years and that they are currently on track to reach desired goals. Stage two will include them announcing they have bought the atmosphere of the earth from Russia and that if you want to breath oxygen you have to not only purchase their new game but play it 2 hours a day in order for your new genetically engineered lungs to work properly (oh wait I forgot stage three). Fanboi/Hater gang wars, news at 11: Bioware will continue to release just enough screen shots and video game footage to grind salt into the festering and open wound that is the Star Wars fan base since SOE basically ripped their guts out over 2 years ago. Fanbois and Haters will form street gangs and have gang wars with chains and baseball bats ala ‘Warriors’ as forums will no longer suffice for this war. Star Wars ToR will release in 2010 amidst riots and Armageddon at every game store from Tinbuckto to the new Lunar Base Blizzard will build at the end of 2009 (oh wait I forgot stage 4 too).

It''s one thing to have a opinion, but enforcing one is unconstitutional. |

I think your mistaken in that if BioWare does this correctly in which i know they will they have yet to fail me in any game except jade empire i dont care what the reviews say that game blew chunks, i still beat it but it blew chunks. But this game has potential to be great because if there is a IP that is bigger then 11million people its star wars. This is how the Old Republic will look. launch - roughly 300k-500k boxes sold And every few months they will have a Content upgrade with 5-10% increases in player base. at the anniversery of the launch 1million players at the second anniversey 3 million players Max players for TOR will be 5 million in my opinion, i know way less the WoW. But Star wars is branded with a certain swagger that some people dont want to be known playing a star wars game even though they love it. WoW isn't branded with that swagger and won't be for along time IMO.

I think the more important question is, how the hell are you an "apprentice' with 3911 posts lol.
Looks like a WoW verses ToR thread to me. A failed one at that so I figured I would liven it up which is going well so far. |

I really hope no one from wow, comes to this game. That would be a crappy community from the start :( In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect. |

TOR will not even come close to WoW's sub numbers. People underestimate just how large a number 11 million is when it comes to subscriptions, and there is no way in hell even half that number will leave WoW for TOR. Its not about game mechanics, IP, or Bioware's reputation (which is non-existent outside of nerdy hardcore gaming circles, by the way). Its about the way that WoW has crossed cultural barriers and made gamers out of people who traditionally have not played games. Its about the way WoW can make tongue-in-cheek references to popular culture that non-traditional gamers love (something Bioware can't do if they're making a story-centric Star Wars game), and its about the fact that these millions of first-time gamers have spent so much time in WoW that they're not interested in jumping ship and abandoning their characters/world just because TOR is supposedly the next big thing. You folks hoping for Bioware's game to come along and 'dethrone' WoW are in for a disappointment. Star Wars has very limited appeal outside of geek circles. Those who grew up with the original trilogy are an aging and limited audience, and the rest of the world sees Star Wars for what it is: a bloated, kid-friendly fable that has seen its best days. TOR will do well enough and will certainly turn a profit (and hopefully be a fun, innovative game), but the odds of it competing directly with Blizzard's numbers are approximately 3,720 to 1. |

Must every thread on these forums turn into name calling and trolling/flaming? This isn't a WoW vs TOR thread either. Here's a little scenario. TOR releases and sells near two million boxes, 50-75% of those players are Ex-WoW players. They all get to try the combat and they don't like it since its slow and not fast with FPS movement and macro spamms (they've done this in other mmos). Most of them leave and go back to WoW..... How does TOR look? Think people wont care that TOR lost near half of their players after the intial month or so? This game could be the best thing going but if the combat isn't there the WoW players will leave and like it or not they make up a massive majority of the mmo community.
Edit: someone said something about the SWG community, tbh I don't see why that community would bother since the majority of them are sandbox fans and TOR clearly isn't. Playing: EvE, Ryzom |

Bioware has a fanbase of something like 5 mill registered users on their gaming sites. That is alot of users considering they never made a mmo before until now. They have a large following and I believe many will come to play The Old Republic because Bioware has that good reputation for making great games. Do I think 11mill plus will play ? Probably not but one never knows how it will turn out. |

On a game thats feature list is pretty much a list of what the devs want to do eventually ie a game in development the tag WOW killer is the first sign it's most likely not to get anywhere close. Box sales might be great but in the first few months there is going to be alot of disappointment when all those little things that add up into great big things that weren't caught in Beta raise their ugly head. From there it's a rocky road to recovery and will most likely never reach the potential in terms of subscription numbers. Want proof just look at all those games that attracted the lable before from Vanguard to AOC to WAR. Al of these games now have to fight their way through the negative first impresions from launch and I would say while they may very well get profitable sub numbers they will never reach WOW. The lesser of two evils is still evil. |

You guys are forgetting how Blizzard came to hold the best mmorpg out there Blizzard was once just a RTS game developer that everyone loved and when they designed their MMO they had that healthy fan base much like the healthy fan base that bioware has from their previous rpg games imo bioware attempt at a MMO could be a next big winner
