If a game is Fun, It's a good game.

You can easily see why this game isnt going to be as popular as WoW just by watching the videos.

Look closely, check out the combat.

The combat looks limited movement wise and we all know what happens to a good MMO that has slow auto face combat.

The WoW players instantly label the game a failure and the combat as inferior to WoWs.

Those players Need Fps CS controls, games with good combat mechanics like WAR and AOC have been instantly dismissed due to slower combat.

While I look forward to this game if you think this game will come close to WoW or will pull wow players your going to be in for a let down.

Damn typos in the poll sorry!

TOR will live and Die by its combat mechanics due to WoW players perfering Fast FPS movement combat?

I hope it comes as close as they can make it to the other Old Republic games... I loved them dearly :)

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

It will and will also be the reason for all the Hate once it releases.

That combat was fun back in the day. It was nice and slow with a spell queing system but with WoW being the "cool kids MMO" that type of combat wont fly.

Tbh if TOR can't grab WoW players due to the combat mechanics most people will consider it a failure just like they consider WAR a failure (i disagree with them but still im the minority).

WoW is a freak of nature.  The high subscription numbers are not normal for MMOs.  WoW is in a class all its own.  It would be insane to think that any game will take down WoW.  If a developer thinks they are making a game to achieve the success of WoW then they failed already.  Microsoft dropped the Marvel MMO because they realized they weren't going to match the success of WoW.

Now if a game suddenly because the next WoW that would be a huge surprise to everyone because WoW simply has a strong base of dedicated players who enjoy or put up with that style of play.  I laugh when I see someone post "thing game could be the next WoW" because at this time that isnt going to happen.  The biggest thing that SW:TOR has going for it is the Star Wars name but it would take much more than that to compete with WoW.

One day however, WoW will start losing the numbers they have and maybe a new game will take the mantle.  I believe that if this were to happen, it would happen years from now.  However I cant see another game ever getting the number of players that WoW has currently.

I agree with you, but what the fonbois forget is that if WoW players don't back a MMO it basically has 100-300k subs.

Now will you consider TOR a Failure when it only pulls in around 500k and under sub numbers after 6 months of release due to slow combat mechanics.

Ahh I re-read your original post and realized I took it out of context.  I'm sorry for that.

I see your point that ppl who leave WoW for SW:TOR will return to WoW.

As for subscriptions numbers for SW:TOR.  It all depends on the number of subs that BioWare believes will sustain them.  If they can make a profit on 100,000 then they are successful in their eyes ... although the rest of the MMO community will see it as just another failed game.

As for the combat ... didnt BioWare say the combat would be fast?

Sucess is always relative. I would consider any MMO a sucess that makes a positve income for their company and can suport an active development team to keep churning out updates for their players.

I wouldn't even venture to say how many subs TOR will end up with, but even if it doesn't draw the WoW crowd its sure to draw both the Star Wars and Bioware crowds. No one can deny that whatever game bioware puts out seems to turn to gold even though they aren't MMO's. I think TOR will draw many people that have never played an MMO based on Biowares previous reputation.

Who made the rules that WoW players only want WoW-type combat?

There is a shitload of  former or current WoW players looking for a new MMO, if the game is good enough or better they will play it. No one who isn't kidding themselves thinks this game will achieve WoW-like subscribers, nor do they think it's going to hemorrhage millions of WoW subs. You can't compare WARs supposed 'failure' to the fact that the combat wasn't just right or that it wasn't fast enough. WARs 'failure' in the eyes of many WoW players is the fact that it offered nothing better at all, you could even argue it offered worse when comparing it to WoW.

If this game is enjoyable and polished it will succeed and it will take a heap of bored WoW players looking for something different, and if the combat is polished and decent I bet you most of them won't give a fuck how fast or slow it is.

Like someone said earlier WoW is a freak of nature, it's like the Counterstrike of the MMO genre, you can't match that kind of thing... not for a long time. But that doesn't mean SW:TOR can't also have it's slice of success and give WoW a little much-needed competition.

WoW is a freak of nature in the MMO industry cause it's the only game out there that attracts the BIGGEST market..  What is the biggest market out there you ask?   CASUAL PLAYERS!..   Plain and simple..  WoW allows people to play 1 hour a day.. or 10 hours a day.  WoW allows people to customize and level all the way to 80 by themself if they so choose to do so..  WoW has the deepest storyline and lore of any mmo out there, rather you play alliance or horde you basically can play 2 seperate games wrapped in one.. WoW allows for strict PvE..  This means that anyone can enjoy the game for 99% of the content and NEVER worry about PvP.. OR.. if you want PvP, then there are servers, arenas, bg's and contested cities for your liking..

WoW will continue to be King of the Hill until someone can design a game that attracts as many customers as Blizzard has..   I would consider Blizzard the Walmart of MMO's..  I wouldn't expect the BEST in everything, but they offer more then any mom and pop store can at lower prices..  Is that a good thing?   who knows (shrug)..

I've played many mmo's in my years dating back to the 90's with EQ and DAoC..  CoH's rocked right up to the point of becomming UNSOLOABLE.. I got to about 20th level and could no longer fight any trash mobs without dying.. (CANCEL).. SOE's failure of SWG, was uncalled for because of piss poor devs of Sony, NOT LUCAS ARTS.. Currently I'm playing WoW and LoTR.. I like LoTR, but I'm having a problem at 28th level.. I'm going thru quest faster then I can level, and too many "fellowship" quest to my liking..

So.... what will TOR hold for me?  I hope NOT another failure like SWG.. I want to experience 99% of the game content requardless of the class and factions I choose without being foreced into PvP or groups..  I'm a parent with a real life that enjoys a lil casual time in the evenings when I can.. If TOR doesn't allow me to that, then I guess I'll stay with LoTR and WoW until something else comes along..

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off.

3/25/09 8:56:34 AM#10

I don't think they are designing or marketing this game to steal WoW subs.  WoW subs are so permanent that they are not a good population to target.  I think they are targeting console MMO lovers such as KOTOR 1 and 2 fans.  Also, they are of course targeting the huge population of Star Wars fans.  I don't see any correlation on WoW players looking into this game anymore than WAR, VSOH, EVE, AOC, ect.

What is your reason for suggesting that they want to target the WoW population?  What evidence do you have for this hypothesis?  And I don't think that the cartoonish look to TOR is enough to back up your assumption.  I'm not saying you are wrong, I just would like to understand where you are getting your information.

What a lot of people are forgetting is that so many people are only playing WoW now cause there isnt anything that stands out to them. Star Wars is way more reconizable worldwide than WoW is. With that and the amount of Star Wars junkies out there there will be not a reason at all for this game to fail. thats just my 2 cents.

First off, there are other players out there other than WoW players.

I don't recall anyone from Bioware saying that they are going after WoW? If they did can you point me to the article?

Bioware games have always been about making rich story lines so combat isn't going to be a #1 thing. I'm sure they will work on the combat but there will most likely be other things that will make the game attractive.

In addtion, the game hasn't even reached beta so there is much more development to be done.

I just don't see what the issue is.

1) I dont think they ever implied that they want to steal all of WoWs subs, nor do they have the expectation that they will be that big.

2) I understand your gripes with the combat flow and animations, but what you're looking at is pre-beta footage. I sincerely doubt that everything has been finalized as of yet. I understand this kind of post when the game is a month or two away from release, but not right now. There's still lots of development to go.

im going to sub to this game BECAUSE its modeled after the kotor games. The kotor combat system wasnt just good "in its day", it was great and still is compared to most RPG's out there. The devs clearly have stated from the the get go that this isnt going to be WoW, thats it. Its going to be exponentialy more story driven, which I for one will enjoy a HELL of alot more than I ever enjoyed WoW. If this game doesnt steal WoW players i'll be thankful, at least that way perhaps the community might have a chance at not being full of douche bags.

Oh I never said TOR was going to fail.

If you look at most of the games that released in the passed four years the Number one complaint from WoW players has been combat mechanics.

Lotro, WAR, AoC all have very different combat from WoW. WoWs combat appeals to people that actually never played a MMO before, its fluid, quick you don't need skill just fast reflexes and good strafe ability, its like CS the MMO fantasy mod.

If TOR releases with combat similar to Kotor Its almost a given that TOR will fall in line with the rest of the releases of the last four years.

Personally I don't consider 90% of WoW players actually MMO fans so for me I couldn't care less if they played TOR but i'm sure if TOR releases and it doesn't hit a magic sub number people will be freaking out.

Y am I posting here??

Bioware is one of the few developers that have a huge fanbase simply based on their name and product history.  Unlike most MMO developers out there (if not all), I don't think they need to rely on stealing a % of the great behemoth's fan-base.

But don't kid yourself, there is a staggering amoung of WoW players who can't wait to play something else, there is just nothing else great out at the moment.  Plus for some reason a great % of their base always compares WoW in its current state (years and years of patches, content adds, expansions, class balancing, etc) to the games that are released without realizing that it is not a fair comparison.  But oh well, can't wait for this game.  Bioware is just too good.

Any new MMO that gets released doesnt need to be "Better" than WoW in order for it to be a success, it just needs to be fun for a casual and hardcore player. In fact any new MMO that gets released needs to be mostly bug-free, have good support from the company, have decent amounts of content, and be able to run on a moderate system and that game will most likely suck a decent amount of subs away from WoW. Why do I say that? Because pretty much all of my friends(and myself included) who currently play WoW are just plain bored with the game. We log on for the most part only for the ingame friends that we all have made, and well, I suppose out of habit as well. Is WoW still fun for us? I wouldnt say the actual content is fun as much as the time we all spend with each other. If TOR gives players a good atmosphere to play in without adding too much tedium then I see a large amount of players switching.
The question you should be asking isnt whether or not SW:TOR will be able to draw away players from WoW(it will, no doubt) but rather will it have the ability to keep the players playing SW:TOR and not have the players quitting after 2, 3, or even 4 months afterwards.

Main reasons(IMO) that people keep playing WoW are:

Too many hours invested in their characters.

Too attached to their characters.

Has developed a habit of logging into the game even when they have nothing to do ingame.

Formed ingame friendships which cause players to log in just to visit with.

As long as TOR doesnt have a horrible combat system similar to Tabula Rasa then I think players will accept TOR as a decent substitue for WoW.
