Seems blizzard have another game the go aside from SC2, D3, unannounced WoW expansion & the new mmo. The interesting part is they are using the WoW engine to prototype.. so is this another MMO? http://www.starcraftwire.net/blog/comments/fifth-blizzard-game-in-the-works-update/ I guess with SC2 more or less done, and going into beta any time now theres room to move a bunch of Devs to a new project. Discuse |

Unannounced title could refer to the new MMO, which has not been officially announced, it is merely "we're working on a new MMO". It is highly unlikely the SC2 team will move to a new project as SC2 is a trilogy and they've committed themselves to making all three. Given the technology they've developed in the past the only reason you'd use the WoW engine for a prototype is if the network code was required for the project. I still think their new MMO is the new IP and unannounced title, but we'll see in a year or two when they finally release the name of it. |

Page is working for me. It says it's not related to the unannounced MMO and that they are using the WoW engine for testing purposes only. They are hiring someone to write an engine from scratch based on their skills and asking people to send sample codes and resumes. So it is interesting to know that they are working on a fifth title. What I'm wondering is with their new MMO that's unannounced, is if it's gonna be a WoW clone with a brand new shiny skin to it....god i hope not. I hope with all the money made from WoW they get creative and take a chance with this new mmo, maybe go sandbox with this one. Guess we'll find out one day.

Using the current WoW engine for testing? A clue? If they are prick teasing fair enough, but if it's a genuine clue, then the person they are looking to hire will be helping to write World of Warcraft 2. - More realistic toons? i.e choose head shapes, different body types, etc. - Deeper realism in persistant world? i.e. LOTR type floral effects, photorealistic sky / distances and objects. - Less arty races, more biological realism (i.e. NElfs are more like Warhammer and LOTR elves rather than cartoony artworx). Just an impression of what they might be looking for in the new person they want to hire for the built-from-scratch new client engine (to be). TM. - I predict that once level 100 is reached in WoW they will think the ultimate barrier has been achieved and will look on ways to reinvent the game to keep players interested (and hence, subscriptions). WoW 2 would make sense.

World of Warcraft skin in the form of starcraft? might be. World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around. |

Okay so the link says the page was removed or whatever but if you go to worldofwar.net and scroll down the homepage, you will find the article relating to the fifth blizzard game in the works. It is indeed a fifth blizzard game, possible a new IP, and not another WoW expansion. This is great news. TRULY great news for all Blizzard fans. My initial guess was that blizzard was epanding upon their roots of the rts genre or hack and slash genre, but the fact that they are using the world of warcraft engine to test the new game makes me believe they are developing either another mmorpg or maybe an action/rpg game seperate from the typical fantasty mmorpg formula. well, they are working on another WoW expansion according to the inside grapevine at WoW-Insider. More than likely it will be the maelstrom. Hints to this are the recent buff to water breathing we had with wrath as well as introducing an underwater mount which is suppose to be out in 3.1 but other than that, Blizzard did say they were planning on releasing a significant title/expansion at least once a year not limited to World of Warcraft. ..buy blizzard stock.. |

This is awesome news. I can't wait for new blizzard games. Honestly, I think they are some of the best developers in the world atm with solid customer base and money to back up their quality in production. PBBG List. |

How to people get that this is their 5th game? Cuz on their site it shows they made more than 5 games Warcraft 123, Starcraft, Diablo 12, WoW, Arcade Classics. Im not sure what you would call it their 5th game universe?
But anyways, Im guessing its going to be WoW2, like others said why else are they using WoWs engine? Why not use the engine they have for the MMO they are developing now. |

I actually wouldn't at all interpret the use of the WoW engine to mean that the game they're prototyping is a MMORPG (though it certainly may be). As it is WoW's engine is probably the best polished engine, with the best toolset, that they have. The Starcraft or Diablo engines are still probably being fleshed out or having their toolsets expanded. In the last six years they've released only one product: WoW and its expansions. It's bound to be a very mature engine at this point.
They're basically prototyping with something equivalent to Unreal Engine 2. It may be missing some bells and whistles that will be wanted for the final product, but it lends very well to getting something up and playable in a fairly short period of time. (The WoW engine is actually probably more mature since it has been developed continually, whereas at a certain point the advancement on the Unreal Engine went into Unreal Engine 3). |
