lol They don't have to get over it, they just won't play it. That's money lost which means its incredibly stupid on the part of Star Vault. Personally,  I love 1st person, and am finally glad to have an mmorpg where i can play 1st person AND see my weapons, hands, etc. But i can't really understand why people can't have a choice. It's not like people asking for a PvE server on a PvP-centric game, its a client-side feature that is a cakewalk to turn on and yields no gameplay advantage in PvP.

Forcing 1st person only = money lost, reduction in overall player base may affect gameplay (empty worlds suck)

Giving a choice = money gained, no gameplay impact

Well, lets hope that unreal engine will give us some properly reflecting water surfaces then.

It DOES have a certain gameplay impact. That was the whole reason to go for 1st person in the first place;

Realistic combat and no auto attacks require aiming which isn't an option in third person. Also stuff like stealth; you don't need 'invisibility' in the game if people can genuinly sneak up to people's backs without them noticing because they happen to have eyes in their backs.

In most third person games you see most people zooming out as far as they can in intense combat situations to benefit as much as possible from their 'god view'. 1st person gives more realism in that it is harder to assess a situation; you have to actively look around and the perspective itself makes combat much more intense since it happens right infront of you rather than 30 feet below. So all in all, allowing them both would have a gameplay impact. Quite a big one.

You are right though, they will not get certain customers who are too much accustomed to the industry standard of seeing their chars through god's eyes and in the middle of a waterfall of brightly coloured numbers. They will get quite some extra customers who applaud that MO is trying something new in the mmorpg department, however.

Have the developers of Mortal Online considered an over-the-shoulder view that cannot zoom out?  I would play Mortal Online if that were included.  The first-person only view is the only thing stopping me from getting excited about this game.

Edit: A good example of a view similar to this would be the one found in Armored Core games.  You still cannot see anything behind you, but you can see your character in action.  This isn't only for aesthetics however.  Depth perception with melee weapons in first-person view is very poor, and your field of view is cut in thirds when in a first person view.  A natural view angle is better achieved with this over-the-shoulder view.

Why does it have to have a zoom? We're just saying we'd like a third person view, not a free camera, per se. I'd be perfectly fine with a fixed over-the-shoulder view like in Mass Effect (Sans the free camera) and Fallout 3. Just give us a small crosshair or something like in both.

I know I won't be playing because I cannot stand first person. Like someone said, restricting it means money lost. And although they have a vision, there must be a way to implement a third person view with a fixed camera to keep the third person players from having an advantage. Maybe more peripheral vision, sure, but it's not that big of a deal.

I think third person without zoom (not talking 'over shoulder view but a further range) would have all kinds of annoying camera fails in tight quarters. Try to think of how much you had to adjust your zoom in third person games. You do it all the time, mostly as a subconscious kind of quick 'view adaptment'. At least that is my experience. The only way inbetween would be closeby 'fixed over shoulder'; the way DF handles it. It could be a viable alternative since I haven't heard complaints about that yet and DF has a similar aiming / real time combat system, I guess.

I like looking at my char as well from time to time but I do think we really have to wait and see how it plays. I am giving MO more than the benefit of my doubt in trying something more realistic and new in an mmorpg. And if you've read stuff on the official site you know that they really aim for immersion by both freedom and realism. By actually 'being' our chars, rather than steering a puppet. If not having 3rd person is the only big sacrifice for that I won't object :)

(I do hope we are able to zoom in and turn our chars in the character window, though, to have at least some way to satisfy our narcism).

Did everything just taste purple there for a second?

I never had a problem with the FPV in Oblivion once I got used to it, I loved it.

The 3rd person view was awful there.

MO looks a lot like Oblivion, so I am not worried. Besides, there will be tons of good reasons not to play if you don't like the game. Your view (1st or 3rd), I would expect, won't be a big deal to people willing to give the game a chance.

I think it will be rather like Elder Scrolls, especially from what the screenshots on the website show. You can see your limbs and weapons in front of you, just without the zooming out to a third person view. I used to be rather adverse to first person, but after a while it's grown on me, sure if I have a decision I will use third person but when it comes to it, it doesn't make it any better or worse of a game, it only dictates how we view the game.

Also, another feature I'm sure will be in there, there will be at least one menu, be in Inventory or Stats or whatever, but there will be one that shows us our characters. And you'll probably be able to spin them around and fawn all over how cool you've made them look etc etc.

Really, I just don't see it as a game breaker.. I think it will as they have intended, immerse the player better and think it may well make for some interesting situations.

There is a balance issue as well. The game is designed so everyone is in 1st player, so allowing people to zoom out to an (unrealistic) overhead view would probably break what they are trying to create.

I think if people are going to give up on the game and write it off simply because of the 1st person view, they wouldn't last long in a challenging game anyway. If the view is enough to make people give up without even trying, those people won't make much difference subscription wise anyway.

I suggest they avoid anything DF players like, so as to minimize the harm that group will do to MO.

Yeah i don't mind either i found out the 3rd person view in Oblivion by accident when i first played it but still played the game throughout in 1st person view since it was more functional that way, the same goes for MO but i just don't see the reason why there shouldn't be a 3rd person view.........................the character model(s) are there, the world is also so that makes the 3rd person view only 1 click of a button away

Iiii-iiiiiit's.... me!!! *Hooray*

I for one am "over it", hehe.

This game looks good graphically in some of the videos and stills. Some of the features sound really interesting as well.

The fact that this is just a first person view 24/7 is a dealbreaker though. Even games that are primarily FPS have options that you can rotate in and out for a change of pace and vision, not as a cheating mechanism. The fact they don't allow you to choose that in this design is pretty retarded imo. I know for sure that after a couple of days in this view only, it would drive me bananas. I can only assume this is something their "base fans" want, although I have yet to read from them who that base is.

Shame... I was interested in seeing what it would be, but this is not personally acceptable as well as those "blurring" effects in combat. I prefer games like CTD 4 and Halo for that type of action and immersion. But even then can only take so much of it over time. Great thing there will be other MMO options on the gaming market when this finally launches, or I'd probably feel like I had no choice but to try it due to boredom.

Meh... good luck MO!

EDIT: Since you can't view your character while playing, I am assuming they don't have a deep character selection screen to build your toon and personalize it. Otherwise, what's the point really if you can't see what you've made yourself, but everyone else can?

i don't care about the third person view. when i'm playing morrowind or oblivion, it's in first person. i see no difference here.

Respect the developers vision and shut up about it - its not as if they have never heard of 3rd Person POV, it was a decision that they made on purpose.. this is how they want their MMO to be played.  You want 3rd person for cosmetic reasons, they want first person for gameplay reasons.. one is more important than the other - end of discussion, seriously.

To some, FPS is more immersive, because you're seeing from the eyes of the character (well relatively speaking).  I think this is a great idea for a PVP game, as it creates more tension and suspense.  Yeah, you can argue it's money lost due to some potential buyers not joining, but at the same it's money gained from people who PREFER that kind of view and that everyone has the same viewing type.
