Well it seams to me space sims interest has picked up again as companies have had some sucess with this type of games in the mmo world.

There is Jumpgate Evolutions. Star Trek Online, Vendetta Online and so on.

Each with they're strong and week points. But most of them do appeal to a like minded player base.

Star Trek Online for instances promisses a more tactical oriented combat system, and who wouldn't like to sit on the commanders chair. Jumpgate provides that fast-paced Freelancer like kind of combat. Black Prophecy from what I gatther will provide a Freespace kind of combat system and it brings the concept of player run stations like it is possible in games such as Egosoft's X series or the classic game Elite.

So what do you guys think is most likely to succed as a sci-fi space based MMORPG?

Ive got a close eye on Black Prophecy as well as Jumpgate Evolution.  I really like the artwork and style of Black Proph, however in the FAQ it mentions an experience based system.  I hope its not a level system.  Also, a game revolving around a universe in conflict with only 2 playable factions?  On the upside, the ship customization system sounds awesome.  I hate to get hyped up so much about it, but it sounds like we'll have more ship options than Eve to customize.  I also like their ideas on clan space stations and resources.

Jumpgate has revealed a lot more about the game than BP has, also has 3 playable factions.  I'll be honest the one thing that turns me off from it is its artwork.  This could change when in-game though, but BP seems to have an edge on its universe design, art and backstory.

What really sells Black Prophecy for me is the graphics. This game looks absolutely incredible! The giant asteroid fields, space stations planets, and the ships, it is all pretty. I think there should be some sort of level system, but is ought to be discreet. A low level player should be able to take on a high level player, and win if he is very good and very lucky.

Jumpgate looks nice, but not as good as this. Only two sci-fi space MMO's worth paying any attention to.

I agree with the first sentence, but if you havnt already go check out Earthrise.  It may possibly be the next BIG sci-fi game.  Its drawing a lot of attention from fans of Eve because of its crafting and resource system as well as anarchy online.

... quick categories for the different games (gameworld / combat system) :

1) Black Prophecy & Jumpgate Evo (space, shooter style)

2) SWTOR, Star Trek Online, Stargate Worlds & Earthrise (most in time on planets, third person, maybe clicky)

3) Eve Online (space, screensaver)

the biggest and direct rival for black prophecy is only jumpgate evo. the black prophecy art direction is a big plus ("real scifi") and if they design the gameplay not to simple and easy, then it will beat jumpgate evo without bigger problems.

Well i think Earthrise looks nice. But i was primarily thinking about space MMO, like Freespace style. I am just surprised that no one is paying particular attention to this game. Many say that Neocron 1 & 2 was failures, i have never played them my self, but i know people are still playing them (i think?).

EVE is not a screensaver though, but it is definently not a shooter either. It is incredible deep and tactical, but it is NOT a shooter, and that is what i am missing. This genre is almost completely dead, and it is a real shame, because i love those kind of games. Freespace 1 & 2, Wing Commander Prophecy, Privateer 2 and X-Wing Alliance. X3 was good, but it was way to complex for a singleplayer game, i would never play EVE if it was singleplayer also.

Black Prophecy looks absolutely incredible. Jumpgate looks nice, but it is way to arcady!

I agree on both of your points of the game looking awesome and that a low level player should be able to beat a high level player " not level one vs max level of course" but if its like level 20 against 30 (just putting numbers) then they are very lucky and probably skilled.

Many people do look at any upcoming sci-fi MMOs vs EvE because of it's successes. I for one personally think that BP will require more skill and less grinding for atleast the levels vs skills in EvE and BP.

I don't worry about the crafting too much and hope they spend more time on the missions to make them "next generation" and the massive battles. The graphics look incredible and way better than some of the sci-fi MMO's i've seen. I thought EvE's graphics looked awesome and compared to this...BP totally wins.

I hope this game can become very sucessful and will probably be a more "World-wide MMO" like Freelancer's Multiplayer was where Russians, Germans, British, Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Australians, and so many more played a game that had so much popularity.

I look at Russian and American fan site boards and it seems they mention Freelancer alot.

To those who don't know Freelancer, it's an old sci-fi RPG which was great with great lore and story. I always tried to find a MMO that was alot like it and hope Black Prophecy is the answer. It has the potential to be great and I hope it will be.

Thank you for reading.

Good post Magter.

I am leaning more towards BP myself and I have been looking into both deeply and I think BP has the advantage. Especially since JGE will come out first they can see what people like and don't like and fix it. And of course have different elements of the game that EVE and JGE don't have. Right now I think the storyline is solid and the graphics are better looking than all the Space MMO's coming out. And with it being a twitch based combat game that will bring in a lot of hardcore gamers that loved the freelancer games and I would have to agree that I think BP will be more of a global success in the end. But we shall see we still have some time before it comes out but I would like to see a beta soon since they advertised it coming in 2008 :)

There is no reason both BP and JGE shouldn't do well... but I'm worried STO isn't going to do well.

Anyway, Just saw the video for this today, on Kotaku, and was like wow ok, this could be very good.
This looks closer to want I was looking for that JGE is, but I sure I'll enjoy Jumpgate just the same.

My biggest worry with BP is that it's biggest selling point will also be it's biggest turnoff. Although some of the most amazing space gfx I've ever seen. It will get alot of attention, but how many people will quit soon after they realize there is no way in hell they are playing it smoothly on those settings. Though it's not worry for me, I have good computer, and damn the cockpit view is another 1up.

Now JGE is somewhat similar to freelancer, The artistic style is very beautiful, "Not as advanced as BP but none the less nice" It is too stylized and not very true sci-fi. Also, the way the camera pans around the ship when turning reminds me too much of a arcadey type game and is kind of a turnoff.

STO- to me that is a nerd paradise, and I don't really consider myself bleed through the tooth nerdy. Hell im a dork, a jerk, and a SOB, But not a nerd. Actually, im sorta just a casual gamer and <_< STO is kinda lame imo. All I can think about when I think about STO is a bunch of really faggy kids at a startreck convention.

Vendetta online..... Well I have a nice computer and have money, so anyone who cannot afford there own hardware or in fact install something directly to their computer. Then this may be the way to go. But for me hell no, I can be a lil picky.

To be honest, I think the most likely to succeed is a tossup between STO and BP. BP for stunning visuals and almost a natural lure that it has. And STO for it's IP and the fact they will be able to do a hella lot more advertising than most of the other companies making these space MMO's.

Personally it shouldn't be much of an issue on avg most people have a broadband connection. Space games are easier to render because they use backgrounds and really the only rendering goes into the ships, planets, stations and weapons fire. This is still a DX9 game so Nvidia 8800+ type video cards should do just fine. I play Crysis Warhead on full settings and works great on my 8800 and BP isn't even close to that complex.

I've been keeping an eye on JGE and now I'll be looking too at Black Prophecy.

What really turns me down about BP is that there are only 2 factions, and that raises population imbalance issues.

JGE has 3, and that makes the game more entertaining, and helps with all the population issues, because the 2 weaker factions will most likely help each other against the biggest one. Or atleast not fight between them.

JumpeGate Evolution shouldn't even bother releasing now. Who in their right mind will play JumpGate Evo over Black Prophecy? Black Prophecy just looks and feels better in the gameplay footage over JumpGate Evo gameplay footage that came out recently. JumpeGate feels like a Arcade game moving about with your ship.

You don't even know anything about any of those games. You don't know anything about their progress system, about BP PvP, about their missions, their crafting system...

If you just look at a couple of videos and make your mind according to that, you'll miss some of the best MMO that will ever go live, and instead play some good-looking crap MMO. (not talking about BP or JGE in this sentence)

I asked that question to the devs and i'll see what I get back. It is like that in most games... people may like the description or the look of the ships of a race and if you have too many people going towards one race then you have an inbalance. This could be offset with racial bonuses or better idea NPC ships could help with battles/wingman to help even it out more. Or maybe even have some technology advances that help the little guy out. I'm sure we will be able to play both sides. And don't forget that the 'Restorers' are the main enemy and the enemy of the Tyi and Genides so we might even have to work together sometimes.

I have never met anyone who actually played neocron that called it a failure, in many respects it was way ahead of its time, including features many new mmo's tout as being ground breaking now. The games only failure, was one of piss poor marketing, as very few people got to hear about it when it was at its peak; however, many people do still play, in fact, it still has a healthy community.

I hope the devs can bring the same level of innovation to BP as they did back in Neocron, if they do, we are in for one hell of a ride.

With BP's huge emphasis on instanced content, population imbalance shouldn't be an issue.
