Really good post. I think the problem with Elfs (I guess with Orcs too, but I never play them. Orcs are prey not players. heh) that people chose Elf as race and play it like a human with pointy ears. As pure cosmetics. You dont have to be a roleplayer, but why chose an "alien race" when you play like human anyway? I dont know the D&D lore so well, but from the german Pen & Paper game The Dark Eye Elves are designed as something really strange for human. They have an "Elven Weltanschauung": they dont value money at all and most human habits as odd; they regard death as nothing evil, and leave their dead unburied, because leaving them to feed nature does not seem odd to them. I usually prefer to play Dark Elfs, though I never shared this D&D perspective on them as being evil. In reality this Drow society just would not work anyway. I regarded Dark Elfs always as some kind of warrior culture, like more sophisticated Klingons, if you like. Harsh but not evil. Wood and Light Elfs always were w bit too ethereal depicted for my taste. A Dark Elf is some warrior type of person like, say, Wolverine, for example. I like the Tamriel Dark Elfs (Morrowind/Oblivion) much more for instance. Generally Elfs could and should be depicted much more alien and not just with some odd style of clothing and architecture. It's kinda the same as it was with SWG - Jedi. So many picked Jedi and just played him like any melee class. Playing Jedi should have been connected to certain RP rules, rules how to behave among people, and why not bind Elfs to similar rules? Rules they have to stick to or risk being excluded from their kind. Now it depends on the world what you chose. Essentially when people pick races for mere cosmetics they get devalued and kinda pointless. I dont like people who chose Dwarfs, Elfs or whatever then play like John Doe.

What's wrong with Elves? How would Santa get along without them?

I don't think there are any elves in Conan.
Oh, and SWG is garbage. Always was, always will be. ____________________________________________ |

/rolls eyes I don't think that your comments are necessary. The OP was saying nothing wrong. Also, nobody said that Elves, orcs, etc. arent apart of fantasy. Maybe you need to understand the thread before you post :) |

The real problem with sci-fi MMO's is that most companies that made sci-fi MMO's failed miserably and that discourages other companies to open to that kind of the genre. The only sci-fi MMO close to success was SWG and that failed after some expansions. And you havent seen the extent of it yet.As most of the games that come out this year dont seem to be anything special and will propably fail also. I expect that sci-fi MMO's will start to bounce back with SWTOR and maybe with Blizzard's new IP MMO? ( Since they are creating a new IP i cant really put it in my mind that it will be anything with Elves/Orcs).August will be a great month this year i expect to see an SC2 release date,Blizzard's new MMO and a lot of vacations :P |

I think part of the problem is that the research for game ideas is based on movies, TV shows and comic Books. Why not literature also? How about the worlds created there - CJ Cheryh's Sci-fi with several alien races and 3 separate Human cultures would work well(and no elves or orcs), William Gibson's Works would work well in my opinion, and also Philip Dick's works( Blade Runner was from a short story of his). There was a fairly good Vampire game - single player already that I think would translate well into MMO - Vampire the Masque I think was the name. For the Record I play and love EVE, how ever there are currently some good games without sissy Elves CoV was already mentioned, I loved it but after level 30 I found it hard to find a group. CoH is another. As was pointed out there are a number of Sci-fi games being worked and and 2-3(if the marvel thing ever comes out) Super hero games(no elves) coming. I also believe that Pirates of the Burning Sea - good bad or indifferent - has NO Elves. There are choices and there will continue to be choices, without Elves, but on the flip side there will always be people who want to be a sissy Elf, and they have that right. Myself I would like to see Shadow Run be MMO or something set in a Blade-runner like world. Cyberpunk would be nice, second chocie would be a Gothic MMO(complete with Goth rock), but I will probably die of old age before I see that. |

Originally posted by Broomy Same here but I came across a game called Requiem Bloodymare. Yes you can call it another Korean grinder and stuff but that only happens in the end. It's a Horror themed MMO rated M. The races are Turan, Bartuk, Kruxena, Xenoa. none of these races has a happy magical little kingdom, maybe they did in the past but they kinda destroyed their world and now they live in a wasteland, Post Apocalyptical world. Races may resemble races from other games but they look diferent. Turan - Humans, we al like humans Bartuk - Orcs, intelligent orcs that are not green this time Kruxena - Dark Elves, they have dark skin but they have a metalic arm and metalic legs. you can say they are Vampire dark elves (my favorite although male armors look kinda gay, although Females are HOT ;))) Xenoa - Fairy like creature, like a small elf but with an evil face, he may look gay nad fantasy like but they are the strongest and most evil race in the game. because of them the world they live in is a desolate wasteland full of monsters. Ok I've said enough, it's not quite what you are looking for but it can do until you find what you are looking for

I'm more sick of elves done poorly :-p , rather than the elves themselves. Sick of playing Entropia Universe? Want to quit, but don't want your hard earned money to vanish? Give your items to ME :-) |

I blame the players. Look at WoW's background. Night elves are large, muscular, hairy and are so attuned to nature that they can end up somewhat feral. Blood elves may be blonde and pretty, but they're also completely addicted to magic and will do anything to get hold of magical energy if they go without for too long. Orcs are intelligent, honourable and have a rich shamanic culture.
Most players (and a lot of the writers that work on Blizzard IP, unfortunately) completely ignore this and go with the usual stereotypes. |

I'd rather not see elves gone, just put them into a post-apocalyptic fantasy-scifi setting and I'm happy. Elves with sawed-off shotguns, can it get better? |
