I can remember a time without games. I was very young but I do remember. So, for people like me, some 20-30 years later, I am very grateful to be alive to have witnessed the evolution of gaming. I am very grateful to be able to play any game at all. So, I don't stress. Darkfall is a wonderful game but it is very rough around the edges and has not had a perfect start. But, that's no reason to get butt hurt and crazy over it. If the problems are too much for you to handle, either seek therapy or go play one of a plethora of games out on the market today and come back to Darkfall in a few months. MMOs last for years and we have seen more MMOs stay in business than not. It is silly to think that because DF's launch was not good that it will automatically fail. Since when has such absolute black/white thinking become so prevelant? Since when have games become a form of a weapon that we use to bash each other in the head with in these forums? Games are about entertainment. We really need to get back to that point. |

You could make this suggestion on Darkfall's actual forums and see how that goes over, but to suggest a division and more moderation because you think it deserves it is, again, silly. The Vanguard forums were just like this when it launched and it was never segregated and neither should DF. |

After reading through each of the previous posts, watching a few of the Darkfal videos, reading the Dev posts in regards to their game, and checking out the Darkfall homepage, I feel it is time to post.
Darkfall is an excellent example of how to not go about creating a game. The amount of time taken in development has caused this game to be outdated at its "launch." The first things I ever heard about Darkfall were full of praise, but unfortunately, it does not seem to live up to its own hype. The videos certainly show it to have the awkward FPS style look, and the graphics are not competitive with the current market. Many of the ideas presented and attempted in Darkfall have a future, such as a skill system where all skills, including weapons increase in rank with use (although even World of Warcraft has this to some degree, and personally I find that game to be an atrocity). Properly handled PvP and consequences will find their way into a game eventually, but it seems to be the consensus that this game does not have it. I have seen an FPS style PvP game handled properly, it is called Fury. It runs on the Unreal engine. The ability to build cities, claim cities, and destroy cities is fairly innovative, but not exactly revolutionizing. The same goes for player created gear.
In regard to the Dev posts, it seems to me that they are indeed a small company trying desperately to be professional, but in general, they lack experience.
The feeling that I received when browsing the homepage for Darkfall was that this game is a culmination of one gamer's desire to make his Dungeons and Dragons home-rule game into an MMORPG. Being a veteran player of the Dungeons and Dragons game through its many iterations, I can easily say that this game has the stink of Dungeons and Dragons all over it. While that might not be a bad thing to some, I personally feel that Dungeons and Dragons Online is doing or has done enough in that mini-genre (I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent playing DDO).
I have seen many aspects of the game I am currently designing reflected in Darkfall, and I thank them graciously for showing me how not to go about implementing certain things.
All in all, I feel that it is a shame that seven years of development were wasted on what could have amounted to a decent game five years ago.
Now then, don't get me wrong. I was fully enchanted by the idea of this game when I first heard of it, and, designing a game that focuses on player interaction and combat myself, I recognize the niche that it was trying to fill. I simply feel, after taking everything into consideration, that it has failed. H A D O K E N !

ok, this is seemingly an incredibly hard concept for people to learn and understand; but i will try again.... WE DO NOT HAVE MR. PEABODY'S WAY-BACK MACHINE, SHERMAN... for those who weren't around for the rocky & bullwinkle show -- we have NO time machines.
darkfall was recently released. if i choose to play WOW - TODAY, am i playing the wow that was released a few years ago, or the current game? if i choose to play EVE - TODAY, am i playing the eve that was released years ago, or the current game? If i choose to play VG - TODAY, am i playing the vg game as it was on the day it was released, or am i playing the game as it is TODAY? what does it matter how eve was two week post-retail? what does it matter how ANY game was two weeks post-retail, if we're discussing darkfall? sure, you can find bad releases, you can also find great releases. intelligent people will have learned from past mistakes, so as to not repeat them -- hence we have some good releases. these intelligent people could be money lenders, publishers, whomever... if they've done their due diligence, they've kept up with the state of the game throughout its creation. this game has potential? great, let us know when it reaches its potential, until that time, a LOT of people are going to be playing games that HAVE reached their potential. why? i don't know why... maybe it's something like... if you can have a loving, devoted, beautiful, caring, kind, understanding wife/husband (whatever your preference) OR you can have a dog that died three months ago and is stinking & rotting in your living room... which would you HONESTLY choose? but, tbqfh, eve fanbois also weren't plaguing every forum on the internet for a year prior to retail release, espousing how eve was the greatest game in the universe, unlike darktard trolls. could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please? |

"I have seen an FPS style PvP game handled properly, it is called Fury. It runs on the Unreal engine" Hate to break it to you Velexia but Fury has been dead for 6 months, so that is not really a good example. They mismanaged that game and it was done by a company that was unknown outside of Aus. except for a RTS game and a model train simulator. From Wiki "It was released on 16 October 2007 and was shut down on 7 August 2008. This puts the total life of the game at a little less than 10 months" It will be interesting to see if DnF can outlast it though. |

The goals and more importantly the presentation of those goals have never been "modest". Quite the reverse. I have played MUDs and MMO's since Bartles original MUD in 1980. I guess I am not one of the hordes you speak of. I was bitterly disapointed with DF precisely because iit dosen't deliver or capture that experience. It is simplistic and pointless, it has no charm, that is why there are hordes of people whining and complaining. Funnily enough NP3/Farlan blamed exactly the same thing (the disapointed fans) for the failure of D&L . Fortunately there are a couple of games on the horizon that harp back to an earlier era one which I have the privallige of testing (sorry, can't say which or I'd have to kill myself) it blows DF out of the water by a metric crapton. There is hope.
Anyway "Out of the Mouths of Babes & Children"....... |

I'll drink to that! I couldn't have said it better myself sir! The DF community is one of the most vile immature communities I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The verbal abuse that goes on constantly on the forums and in ingame chat has to be seen to be believed. There is no good sport attitude going on anywhere in DF, the tone is very elitist and all the hacking that comes with them, you'll see carebear hurled at you for even looking at safe zones as you walk by. |
