These are all Tasos quotes from the DF forums.

March 1st, 2009:

"We generally frown on unattended macroing and if you use macros you do so at your own risk..."

March 3rd, 2009:

"Anyone macroing within the tower protected areas will be warned once, and then kicked. Repeated violations could result in a ban."

March 6th, 2009:

"Unattended macroing anywhere is forbidden. Offenders will be kicked. Repeat offenders will be banned."

and finally March 9th, 2009:

"Today we started permanently banning accounts involved in using 3d party programs to exploit."

So they went from "frown"ed upon to "could" be banned to "forbidden" to "banning" within a 9 day period.  That doesn't seem like very well thought out macroing policy for a game that spent 7 years in the oven.  There are plenty of other MMOs that have tackled the very same issues it seems like they could have learned ahead of time from other companies mistakes.

So what you're saying is that 9 days is too long to get to the point where they start banning exploiters/botters?  Uhm... that sounds pretty reasonable to me.  Who cares if they were making the game for 7 years?  Most of us don't even have access to the game yet.  It's good that they decided on their policy before the majority of the general public got ahold of the game.  I'm just glad that they are banning the hackers/botters at all.  I was afraid that, being a small company, they'd let it go on for a while since they needed the money.  Looks like they're doing what's right in the long run.  No one ever accused them of being quick to get things done.  You said yourself, it took them 7 years to get the game made.

7 years in development, a small indie company and no Mega producer to dump 30+ million dollars of cash and force them to compromise their vision and make another McDonalds MMO. They did an amazing job and actually have a functioning game to play, I can cut them some slack on a stupid policy.

So you are disappointed that they didn't have a formal macro policy defined ?

LOL  I guess everyone finds fun in different things,  I would rather get into some PvP then drool over the detailed EULA and TOS aggrement, by that is just me  :P

Aside from maybe the game itself, there doesn't seem to be alot  that is well thought out by AV...

they arent banning right away for unattended macroing, that states 3d parthy programs to exploit = cheat as in speedhack, wallhack and such.

Policy from 6th stands when it comes to Macroing

Funny Tasos says in some interview that they developing protections against cheaters/macroers because they do consider it from scratch developing of engine.

So why we dont see any of these protections and why we have GM Volutenteers (probably supporting theyr mains and friends) like we have in UO on private servers.

If someone don't trust me, someone probably could post a link to that interview.

Is it just unattended macroing?  Have they said how they would be checking and defining "unattended"?

their policy from the start has always been that 3rd party programs that modify or exploit the game were cheats.

either way, i always enjoy the QQ posts of cheaters.

The 'macro' policy is the same as everything else they have done with the game.

It's like they are clueless that other games every existed.. and they are learning the most 'basic' information only after it blows up in their face.

Guard towers -  wow, we didn't realize that people would gank players while they were trying to bank
Rogue changes -  wow, we didn't realize that players would purposefully jump in front of other players to make them go rogue.
Stress test -   wow, we didn't realize players requires actual bandwidth.. we were sure our AI bots could test the game
Naked melee -  wow,  most players will remain naked with their newbie weapons most of the time they play the game (still not fixed)
Macro -  wow, people will stand around in town and shoot magic missles into the air
Unattended macroing - wow, people will create programs so they can cast magic missles in the air while they sleep

They are now in a 'hectic' react mode to all these problems, which anyone who ever played UO would know were going to happen.  They are added last second changes to the game in a frantic attempt to stop exploits that anyone with half a brain knew were going to happen.

The entire city claiming process has already been ruined because guilds exploited to no end the first couple days.  You basically are forced to cheat to ever have a chance of competeing.

I will macro until I am banned.   There are things I want to do that requires tons of harvesting which will take hours, days, and weeks on end.    If I have to do all that harvesting by sitting at my computer clicking a button, then screw it, I would quit the game anyways.

So in the meanwhile, I will harvest macro until I get banned.    That's if they are actually serious about banning macro'ers.   I really don't think they have or they will.

The OP is a little off in his conclusions. The fact is that unattended macroing is illegal. Macroing , where you are present at the computer, is not. To assume that '3rd party programs used for exploitation' means macroing is a wrong assumption. Macroing is ok so long as you are playing the game activly and present. 3rd part programs, like bots and scripts, are what tasos was refering to

No.  That's not what he's saying.  What he's saying is that continuous public posting of opposing policies (say that 3 times fast) is a hallmark of dumb shits who don't know the first damn thing about managing their product.  This isn't something that they can just release an anti-stupid patch for either.

Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

I'm curious how they developed an 'anti-macro' code, when the majority of their testing was done by AI bots.

I think the fact that they have volunteer GMs having to manually go in and check for player responses is a sign that they don't have any automated system.  You either have to be reported by another player, or else you have to have a GM randomly spy on you.

This game is 2002 all over again.  Everything about the game is outdated.

i read somehwere that everyone has a different opinion on what is good/bad in a good and that sometimes developers like to let the community decide what is good/bad, yeah!!!111

we should all go play WOW where all our options as a player are whittled down to experiencing only the content they make for us, over and over and over until we get rep for the next stage, which we can do over and over, until we're attuned for the next stage, which we can then do over and over, yeah!!!111
