Someone raised a good question in another thread that hasn't been answered.

All we seem to see or hear about is the mana missile.

Is that the only ranged offensive spell in game ATM?

No fireball?  Nothing else?

Its been out for a few weeks now, you would think at least some people would have more spells.

I don't have a video, but there are definitely other ranged spells out. You see mana missile a lot because it's free. I'm not sure of any other except heal self that are free, but there probably are some.

yeah people said that you could macro train using magic, i can't believe that someone hasn't gotten better spells and showed them off

Not sure, but who would name any spell "mana missile"?

Does this mean that everyone in Darkfall is wearing ancient Isrealite robes and they're running around throwing cakes at each other? That doesn't seem too interesting...well, at least you can aim.

My guess would be that the grind is so horrible that not even the 24/7 macroers have gotten anything other than mana missile and heal self, or maybe that the other spells they have managed to get looks exactly like mana missile and heal self.

I cant think of any other explaination... I have watched so many youtube videos that im having nightmares of stiff pixel guys in their underwear swinging a halberd over and over... and I have yet to see anything other than those 2 spells.

By the way, no need to limit it to ranged spells, I havent seen any melee spell or beneficial spell (other than heal self) either.

Oh, a third possible explaination to the semingly lack of other spells could be that the animations and effects of them are so obscure that its almost impossible to spot them.

Takes a long time to get magic up.  Don't expect to see fireballs and lightning bolts and icicles become common place for at least another month.

Of course, I'm sure the l33t macro grinders will be throwing fireballs within a few days.

 

Btw, I'm restating the obvious, but YES, there are other ranged offensive spells in the game.  People reached them about a week or so before the end of beta... the l33t magic grinders, that is.

Its called "mana missile" because it depends only on mana pool and not on other ingredients ..background : for higher spells ingredients on casting are needed..(would be another novelty in Darkfall)..payoff for being that "cheap" is it does lesser damage..

Its an old RPG habit to relate magic to a "mana" pool ...

Ingredients for spells isn't novelty, just another feature nicked from UO/AC.

It's really not a novalty, UO (reagents) and Asheron's Call (components) both have ingredience required spells.   But, I think people are confused by the idea of not being rewarded every 10 mins by a new 'spell' because of what Everquest derivatives have brought (WoW in particular).

Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily think that Everquest or all the clones that that game has spawned are bad, I just think that it's wrong to think that all MMOs have to follow the same formulas and trends that game started.

I read a thread where someone in beta tested all the other spells but many where useless ie. did LESS damage than mana missile but cost ingredients etc. so seems like alot of the spells need tuning/fixing.

I did see a video recently where a GM used firestorm and set a bunch of people on fire it was pretty sweet.

It did less damage then using mana missile at high level .. in really  some higher DarkFall magic spells (leveled high) are like "nuclear assaults" compared LOL

Perhaps, and I don't know, that person simply didn't understand how to use the spell correctly?  I've seen numerous people, in various other games, not understand how a spell worked and thought it was completely useless.

They could be situational spells, that when used at the right time or on the right creature, become very powerful.   Just keep that in mind.

The last 2 or 3 patches in beta were focused nearly completely on tuning the advanced spell schools.

This is correct.

The major problem was surrounding the staves not having different ranks (eg... more damage potential). This would be like raising your sword skill, but still using a noob sword... Damage increases slightly but makes your combat skills ineffectual. They did enable ranks to staves which fixed part of the issue.

Another problem was that raising spells in the major catagories costs a tremendous amount of resources in the form of ingrediants. This made it cost prohibitive to raise spells to the upper tiers without going completely bankrupt. Again this might have been partially fixed.

Finally, many of the upper tier spells have utility to them making them benificial over the standard mana bolt... at the end of beta the utility aspects of these spells were not working noticeably. Given that many of these spells to balance their power have smaller or no AOE aspects along with increased ingredient and mana costs made them pointless to level.

My guess is that some of this still needs to be corrected and will not be completely addressed until more people start exploring the upper tiers of the magic system.

One of my guild members is way deep into magic.   He has been throwing around stuff that I have no idea WTF it is.   There are definitely other attack spells, and once leveled up they can do significantly more damage than MM.
