Like so many aspects of AoC it simply doesn't make sense
Why? I remember some pre-launch or launch interviews where Funcom said that they wanted to try some innovations instead of coping all of the other mmos. As with every innovation it was a risk, but I think it was worthwhile, especially since they have now simplified it. As a whole it is not very much different from the other games so everyone can still fell at home. As I am playing several mmos, often 2 at a time and playing them on and off I enjoy the small differences it brings to the game play. It makes it something different from the "same" grind everywhere.

I think what he's saying is the game STILL isnt complete. Im no expert on mmo programing but I would think voice overs would be on the simple side of getting the game ready for release. One of the best things about AoC are the fatalities imo but just because they added a new area doesnt mean that its not a grindfest. Tortage is the best thing about AoC. The farther you get in leveling the worse it gets. For those of you playing AoC I hope you enjoy it while it lasts. |

The combo system probably started with an idea similar to fighting games. A combination of key presses resulting in a special attack. but then they decided that might be too tricky, so to simplify, you first click the "i'm going to do this combo now" button. That makes the whole thing wierd, because yeah, if you have that combo button, why not just make it do the combo. Imagine if using the combination of swings automatically yielded a combo, without telling it which combo you were going for. Would make it more interesting, it'd make more sense, but it might be too consolish for a lot of people. So the way they have it is a compromise, I guess. As for why spellcasters don't even have combos, though? No clue. That just seems stupid to me. When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

Great.. another positive review by a guy who is level 9?! Give me a break. Hey OP, come back when you get to the endgame. THEN you will see why 90% of players quit Age of Conan. Meanwhile.. enjoy your Tortage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48 |

Problem with voiceovers is that they are very expensive to produce. And if you want to change the dialogue later, you are pretty much screwed. The fact is Funcom ran out of time and money. THAT is why Tortage was (and still is) the only polished part of AoC and has voiceovers. Rest of the game is unfinished plain and simple. I personally believe they launched about 2 years too early and I'm sure most of the Funcom staff agree. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48 |

To me Tortage is the worst part of the game. Not to say that it isnt good but to me the real game starts when you leave and go into the world. Tortage was a handheld tutorial led from one quest to the next. Polished yes but the world of Conan really begins after the first 20 levels. |

Also the VO thing is really not that big of a deal to me. I played EQ2 for a long time and I liked the VO in the game but it didnt make the game. It does lend a hand in added immersion but not much else is gained from it. Very expensive for the company and takes up alot of space for the consumer. Better sometimes to not have them through out the whole world. Instanced or not the world is huge. |

I have to agree that this is by far graphically and lore wise one of the best mmorpgs I've played. I originally couldn't play AoC when it released because my old computer couldn't handle it, I was glad of that fact once all the negative feedback came in after release. I've since got a new computer and a month ago I saw AoC for £9, I figured it was worth giving it a try for that price. I've not regretted it! I've levelled a Barbarian to 49 on Fury PVP server so far and I'm still having loads of fun, probably more so then I had in Tortage. I can crank the graphics to full and it looks amazing, the quests are fun and immersive, the music is awesome, the fatalities still havent got old, and the constant having to look over your back on a PVP server only adds to the fun. The complaints I have so far probably only apply to PVP servers. The cutscenes for quests - I have to click through them insanely fast without reading them if I'm in a busy quest area, getting attacked when your stuck in one and trying to press esc is annoying. But it did bring about a great moment - being attacked by an assassin, hammering on esc to get out the cutscene and turning in time to stun him and get a fatality that hacks off his arms and head was too satisfying! He ran from me everytime he saw me after that. The biggest annoyance though is the criminal/murder system, it's more then infuriating having a group of players 10+ levels below attacking me and I can't do crap about it because theres always one who jumps into your splash damage if you fight back, and somehow your the murderer for that. Its turned the ganking around completely, getting tracked and unstealthed by a Ranger 15 levels below you (who always comes with a group) isn't fun! But I'm pretty sure that can be fixed easily with a bit tweeking. I might change my mind as I level higher, I might get bored eventually but thats always the case with most games, but for now I'm enjoying it. Alot of old players may be posting negatively about the game but I'm guessing quite a number of them haven't played since months after release or its just not the game for them. For anyone considering playing AoC its worth a try, find out for yourself rather then reading all the negativity still around. |

probably the most obvious flaw in this game in terms of development, which is demonstrated by the VO issue, was management of resources. Seems they were aiming for something that was way too big in scope for what they had money for, and for what money they'd be getting. By release time, it became clear that the money didn't go as far as they'd hoped, and many fundamentals were tossed to the wayside. If they had done everything perfectly, I think this still would have been a game with around 300k subscribers. Nothing to sneeze at by any means, but when you supply a big budget to a niche game, you'll get burnt even if you succeed. I'm at 39th lvl with a HoX, with a bunch of other classes around 10-15-ish, and am enjoying the game. There seems to be more than enough content for my character up to this point, but not enough to make even a second classes' experience unique or even close. So I can see why some people love the game, and why some feel ripped off. Even now, bugs abound. The "always logging in at midnight" bug has been around less than a week and is already getting old. Some of the completely bizarre mission difficulty judgements(20-ish level missions traveling through 70+ level mob country)... the way climb is used; not as an interesting gameplay element, but rather a means to block low levels from certain areas... Despite that sort of stuff, I still enjoy playing. I hope it survives. I have no ill will toward Funcom. I think they did the world of Conan justice. I'll play the game til' it's no longer fun. Then I'll stop. |

Strange thing though is when I dont like a game I sure as hell dont manage to lvl a char to the max lvl before I quit.So even though you hate AoC/Funcom and continually spew your venom on this forum you played it till you got a lvl 80????? Man guess it aint so bad after all otherwise you would have quit. How is the free account you got these days anyway? Still logging in to check the endgame or you stuck in Tortage? Gaming since 1985 and still going strong. |

Yes, I have a level 80 character. Why? Like I've said before.. I hated every second of grinding to that level 80, but I saw light at the end of the tunnel, the "awesome" AoC siege battle!! I kept telling myself that it was all worth it because the endgame is going to be great like Funcom promised. Then I saw the boring endgame and my eyes opened. In my opinion people who like AoC , almost always have a level 1-60 character, and people who hate AoC, almost always have 1 or more max level characters. What does this tell us? It tells us that AoC is fun for a while but once you get to higher levels, you get bored and quit. This has happened to EVERY SINGLE of my RL gaming friends (20+ people) and it happened to me too. AoC is fun for 1-2 months, maybe even less. Why do you think 90% of players quit after launch? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTihsJQHt48 |
