1st of all, i dont even know if ER will have melee weapons.

Questions: When i equip melee weapon, im forced to play third person view and with a range weapon, fps?

Can i manual toggle the view when i have a melee and a range weapon?

The whole game is base on fps like fps games or third person view?

Im a fan of third person shooter game like gears of war so i hope i will be able to play in third person view well, because if ER dont support third person view, i will go play fallen earth.

Played DF trial for 2 weeks none stop. Check out my pvp video during trial.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJnU_JEqKRM
So you can stop posting that i played DF only for 2 weeks over and over again.

ER is going to be a third person rpg/fps but you have the option of toggling in between views. They do not force anything upon you.

Earthrise will be an over-the-shoulder third person shooter with RPG elements such as skills and upgradeable equipment. Earthrise will not have any hitboxes, so shooting a player in the head won't do any more damage than shooting them in the foot. There will be a dice-roll effect with each shot, and the targeting will be sticky in Earthrise. The devs decided to do this to eliminate the need for twitch based combat skills and focus more on a strategic feel to the game. Earthrise will also feature full PVP and full looting, meaning you can be attacked anywhere and if you don't have your items insured, the attacker can loot your corpse and take your items. However, there will be measures in place to protect players from being attacked in major cities, and from losing all of their gear.

This is from the EA forums. I hope i understand this correctly and that EA will NOT be like TabulaRasa or Hellgate London, where you dont do anything but aim and spray. That model just gets too boring too fast imo.

Yes EA will have melee weapons :)

In the future Earthrise is ER, not EA. Masthead Studios is MS... Just so you know.. And if I remember correctly TR was third person with hardlock. (My memory could be wrong about that..) But yeah you got the general idea. The game will be softlock that will require assitance from the player to be able to keep that lock on. So if the target is moving you will have to track the player with your mouse. Also there is no hitboxes as been stated with that link you gave. Very well done tho and coodos on the research you did.

But as I said there will be free view... You will be able to choose between first person view and third person view. To back up my statement here is a quote from one of the HoC that was hosted by Stratics.

"zigzag - *hannes* You have mentioned that camera modes will be a mix of Third Person Shooter and First Person Shooter. Will you be able to freely switch between these modes or will there be forced modes, such as only FPS while "looking through your scope" for better aim?
[MS]Ostiak - Player can freely choose the camera they like, no actions will force them to switch to a certain mode"

Thank god its not EA. 1st, they started to kill defjam icon and the 2 defjam before this one was very fun. War, it dont seem that good and its very slow. They killed UO, and they did many other failure just after they killed defjam icon.

LOL are you kidding? Over the shoulder, third person shooters suck asz. Shooters are meant to be played in first person. Hello quake, fear, doom, call of duty, unreal, or just about any other shooter!

As a matter of fact some dumb mmo recently tried and failed  using third person shooter style...can't even remember the name.

I believe you're thinking of Tabula Rasa, and it didn't fail because it was 3rd person, as a player of that game, it failed due to many many reasons (Namely one of the companies involved)

There have been many successful 3rd person shooters, and the idea of using a 3rd person system in a shooter MMO can and has worked previously, look at how successful SWG was prior to the NGE debacle.

And to answer a question from the original poster, yes they do have melee weapons in the game, they also run on fuel cells/batteries and other such things though, so a melee swing does cost something just like firing a bullet, it's not all going to be shooty bang bang, you can club someone in the head aswell

You are not your uptime stats or your oversized screencap.

Mass Effect is a very popular third person shooter RPG. From the post showing a quote, this game sounds awesome. Mass Effect also used dice rolling, and was a lot of fun. I always thought EVE + Mass Effect would be a winner. Now I'm really excited about this game.

mass effect did not use dice rolling. it has a clever system where say increased accuracy stat literally makes you shoot in a straighter line.

dice rolling with manual combat (or twitch/shooter whatever should I call it) is lame, one of the reasons I couln't play morrowind as a oblivion fan.

ughh. keep your filth off these forums. It's clear that you're "offended" by third person shooters, but believe me when I say that its YOU thats the problem, not TPS.

Yet it is the best way to go due to the fact that many players are not skilled enough to play a twitch based game. People will get fed up and start to leave the game slowly due to the fact the game is frustrating them. It is really hard to make a successful mmorpgfps that is balanced and will attract a lot more people than the select few who are really good at FPS games.

That is the main reason why the devs decided to not make hitboxes and not make this game a true fps. So there is a balance amongst players... So that it is not the skill of the player able to get hitboxes (Headshots) but the skill of the player to use his skills, tactics and abbilities to their fullest.

The MMO genre as a whole is a running joke considering a 5+ year old game is so dominant.

LoL, stop arguing with her Joker (her and not him since avatar has a lot of pink...lol), she trolled 6 different ER threads all at once, and is obviously only here to make you waste 5mins trying to respond to her in a two paragraph reply.

But it is an interesting subject to talk about. I had this exact same convo with someone else on my guild vent.  Talking about mmofps. How they would work and how would they no work.

Actually I'm a game design student, and from the discussions I've had at my school on how they could make it work comes down to one unique feature you hardly see in a lot of fps games.

You want to put strategy in fps you add a feature that can block incoming damage, MO is trying an idea similar to this but I believe only for melee attacks.

If they did it for range attacks it could make a world of difference.

Making an rpg instead of an fps is not incompetence.

If you ask me, I think that they should allow the players to chose whether or not they fight through the soft lock or twitch based combat.

this would be awesome. I've seen it in a few games (UT2003/4, SWG, AO). was awesome in Unreal Tournament 2004 when you were trying to defend yourself from multiple players and get away, would pull out your shield gun and block some of their attacks.
