9th Vana'diel Census ~ FINAL FANTASY XI has celebrated seven illustrious years of service since its launch in Japan, and as of June this year, boasted a population of over 2.35 million characters.
8th Vana'diel Census ~ On May 16, 2008, FINAL FANTASY XI celebrates its six-year anniversary since its launch in Japan, and will blaze a trail into its seventh year of service! With adventurers now blazing trails across Vana'diel's time stream in the fourth expansion pack, Wings of the Goddess, and with the addition of a “World Transfer Service,” FINAL FANTASY XI's thriving community has grown to more than 500,000 users.
It appears that the 1st - 3rd Census isn't available anymore at least I couldn't find them, but to all those that consider this game not doing so well, you'd best think again! Year after year even with the 10s of thousands of players every few months that Square bans due to cheating/exploits/farmers etc and it still maintains a 1/2 million subscribers! I highly recommend you give this game a trial, take the time to learn the controls and how the game plays, and you'll find an extremely deep and exciting adventure. One of the best story lines ever in an MMO which includes personal cut-scenes that play out at certain parts to greatly enhance the story even more. |

You know, you could even rub their nose in this and they still won't believe it. Like NotArkard said in the other thread, who needs the facts when you have your gut?

Yeah I know they won't really care or believe me even with fact shoved in their face. I wanted to make this thread in general for everyone new & old that wants to try FFXI and have been concerned with the population. 500,000+ subs is damned impressive after almost 7 years and it shows others how well a game not focused on graphics succeeds well beyond those that focus entirely on it. To any devs that may read this, thanks, cause it really is all the content and little things that make this MMO shine forevermore above all others! Then of course when someone does come in the FFXI area and complains that the population is bad, everyone has a thread they can link those tards too...hehe {which has been pretty often of late} |

I actually prefer all the WoW kiddies and immature tards to actually stay on WoW lol, although this was a very nice post. Game is far from dead imo. |

Based on member information, it seems most people on that site are from the Unicorn server. Just more proof that my server sucks. :( The contents of this post do not necessarily reflect the views of MMORPG.com and its management. |

Interesting. At one point I had heard the number was around 700,000. Not sure how accurate that was though. |

I also recall 700,000 subscribers reported at one time. I think that was way back before WoW launch, possibly in the third census? I remember that the 1,500,000 number was when SQUARE ENIX reported having that many active "characters" in FFXI. I think that may have coincided with the 700,000 subscriber accounts. Most of my friends and I have between 2 and 3 characters in our accounts - without doubt we would have made more characters if it didn't increase our subscription fee! |

What i cant wait for is the new census coming up in a few months that i think is going to show a good 10k+ increase in new/returning players to the game. I feel that 10k is conservative but will be close. But even if they have a 100 person increase over the other years that's 100 more people playing it now than were and the game will be 7 years old. This game is strong and has years left in it. The graphics are dated only to the people who think a video game is just about the visuals. Mind you, they dont stick around to behold some of the most awesome Cutscenes from any game i've seen (was during the CoP and ZM missions). The visuals on this are still awesome and stunning and though not cutting edge are still nicely done and add more realisim to it then walking up a purple staircase in a huge tree that you can just jump down from once your turn in that 1700th quest for exp. (Not that i'm naming names >.>)

Bumping this to page one, so more new players interested in FFXI get a look at the population and aren't scared off; thinking its dead! I'll also be updating this thread here in about 1.5 months time with the new Vana'diel Census 2009. I'm looking forward to reading another great report and hopefully even more additional information of which Square has been adding each year! |

9th Vana'diel Census has been released! Check it out using the link above! Some very interesting data this year, not to mention 2.35 million characters and as a rough estimate assuming everyone that plays has at least 2 characters which I know not everyone does.{no reason to have more than 2} That would put the population across all servers at a very healthy 1,175,000 players! Up from 500,000k thats been reported over the past 7 years is truly impressive!

I recently in last few months transferred off the Odin server due to overpopulation... so many people on at a time camp mobs are killed on spawn. Went to seraph awile back but havn't really found many people to play with... sucks after playing for so long to see your friends leave to the point your all alone.

You aren't the only person that happened to. My RL friends got me to play and now, I'm the only that that still does play 6 years later.
I wasn't expecting anything less from this census. Not bad for such an old game, eh?
