I am what you would call a "mature" gamer who has been playing WoW for several years. I played UO, EQ1 and Asheron's Call before that. I do remember life before Pong...I think. Are there any robust PVE games other than WOW that would interest an older player? I love PvE and difficult end game content that require stratgey over boring zergfests. I don't care for PvP since at my age my twitch skills are lol!. I like crafting, if craftable items are actually of value, and theorycrafting. Most of all, I am looking for a game with a mature community and with stable guilds interested in progression. Any hope of there being anything out there besides WoW?

Good luck with that.
More so good luck with finding some one who is actually a mature gamer here rather than calling themselves one.
I'm more of the burnt out, jaded, oldsy gamer...So if you manage to find a new game that actually fulfills the ability to be action oriented and challenging from a combat perspective(pvpand pve) in your searching, give a holler. >_> As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero. - Vaarsuvius |

Well, mature gamers are spread over most games but the one where I seen most is in EQ2. The games seen most kids in are Wow and Guildwars, but it might not be a coincident that they also have most players. I think you should try EQ2, it have very good crafting and great dungeons, the solo play is not so good however but that makes most paople group after the first few levels. And the PvP is bad too. It have a free trial of course. |

The word "mature" has a lot of contradictory meanings; I take it you mean "something older people would play", as opposed to "rated M for mature". Statistically, if older people play computer games at all, it's likely to be simple things like card games. But I don't think that's what you're looking for. I'm not sure why you cite WoW, as it doesn't fit the criteria you lay out at all. If you want a mature community, a considerable emphasis on crafting, and difficult content that isn't a zergfest, try A Tale in the Desert. One could argue that it's pvp, but that's in the sense that political elections are pvp. It's not twitch-based at all. It's a weird game, with no combat (that contributes to it having a mature community), but fits the criteria you list pretty well. |

As for robus PvE games, Vanguard is as good as you can get. It's the spiritual successor to EverQuest and its probably the best PvE game on the market right now. |

Eq2 or LOTRO are the 2 i've played with fantastic communities. LOTRO is pve heavy most quests after 30 needing to be done with a full group or at least almost full. Very storlyline driven not to mention some fun crafting. Also the community is fantastic. Only met 1 or 2 bad apples while playing. Eq2 I've met one of my all time best friends ever in (although she lives kinda far away). Great community and pretty good PVE the only problem i've ever had with LOTRO is sense of character progression is a tad on the week side IMO. But great PVE and some fantastic dungeons.

I play what I like. Currently that is Vanguard. It's good to be able to live in my own skin and not feel like I have to follow the crowd any more. |

Lord of the Rings Online... Fully story driven PvE quests with an Epic Book Storyline that, IMHO, is unrivaled in any MMORPG. While it's true you don't get to be a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, you do get to meet the members of that fellowship, and do things behind the scenes and around the edges of their story to ensure they are successful in their endeavors. Totally segregated PvP in a separate zone of the world that you never have to enter if you don't want to. The Player Vs. Monster Player (PvMP) system that is used allows those that aren't satisfied with being a "Hero" to take on the roles of Monster characters (Creeps) of appropriate level to do battle with the forces of the Free Peoples (Freeps). The Freeps are regular player characters that have achieved a high enough level to travel to this battleground type zone callled the Ettenmoors. There are quests for both Creeps and Freeps in the Ettenmoors, most of them dealing with the capture and control of strategic locations throughout the zone. Whichever side has the majority of control points, also has access to a dungeon that can only be accessed in the Ettenmoors. But once again, should you never wish to be involved in PvP, there is no reason that you would ever HAVE to go to the Ettenmoors. Crafting that produces actual usable items, with items that match up well by tier with the level of character that can use them. And the "one shot" single-use recipe drops that can be obtained as drops from combat or the Auction House make some truly sweet gear for the intended levels when a critical success is achieved on them. As a whole the community is one of the finest and most mature I have ever been involved with in all my years as a gamer. True, there will always be the occasional a$$hat or l33t-speak kiddie in any community, but I have found them to be the rarer exception in this game and not the norm. Maybe it's the material of the IP but to me it seems Prof. Tolkien's world draws a more mature crowd of gamers. I know on the server I play on there are many Kinships (guilds) that have been around since beta days and some even prior to that on the old MEO forums. So if you're serious about the things you mentioned in your post, come check it out for 10 days for free...
Anyone and everyone can feel free to disagree with any or all of my opinions and observations whenever I rarely post them; it doesn't bother me one bit. Just know that I'll likely never respond to YOUR disagreement or personal attack, because I know better than to argue with idiots, especially upon internet Forums. See what I did there? -- Dinidain |

No question, they would be playing PVE games. That does not mean you have none of the immature in PVE games, just less of and more mature. http://www.youtube.com/user/Napolianboo#p/u/15/rCYLLQCNc1w |

Well, depending on what you want most of, PVE, mature gamers and crafting I would recomend Horizons. Definatly has the mature gamers and crafting altho the game is lacking in PVE and new age graphics. The main drawback is the population but I hear Vanguard has a similar issue. Go try both since they have trials. Make games you want to play. |

It all depends on who you associate with really. I had a fun guild in Warhammer which was mature and very organized guild but Warhammer lacked the PVE nature of gaming i enjoy so much. As of now i play Vanguard and eq2., and when i want my sci-fi addcition handled i play Anarchy Online or SWG. Out of the games i play Vanguard and eq2 both have different features i like, plus i know mature players in all of these games. |

Oh well I had to hint nastily at WoW, but polysemy is evil anyway I can tell you only about LOTRO : it has impressive dungeons (you FEEL Evil around, beautiful graphics (the ones you keep being amazed at even if you've seen them many times), enchanting music, serious and helpful community, proper use of channels, decent crafting, very solid PVE with excellently written quests and a backbone of epic quests which drive the general story and where you can help the Book's main characters, real RP on dedicated servers. Personal house, Kinship house, you can play your own tunes with different instruments in the game, you can customise your look, enhance your own weapons with XP, you get free books (= regions and quests) regularly, you can buy a lifetime subscription. As you're not into PvP you can ignore player versus monster that don't impact PvE (it's a large region with objectives, repeatable quests and dungeons, and where you can play an evil character). I noticed since Moria expansion came out an obvious increase in population (on my RPG European server Laurelin) so it's gaining popularity which is well deserved and promising! I'd say compared to many mmorpgs LOTRO makes sense because the vast majority of even petty quests relate to the main story and all seems well knit together and overall I always feel a sense of evil, epic and nobleness in this game. I think Turbine managed in its own way to imbue its game with the kind of greatness you experience reading the Book and at the end of the day there's more than just fun or entertainment in this game.
