Any positive memory concerning ones youth is good in my opinion. I've had so much fun with Lineage 1 when i was a teen and it kinda made me more mature since alot of the playerbase were around 20-35 years old.
I still remember the tickle i had in my stomach just waiting to play after a hard day at school. Sounds kind of like an addiction, but i'd rather call it a passion.
Good times |

Um...ok...thanks for sharing? Daragoth "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill |

I remember reading about the beta for AC in some computer magazine, you could even get the disk for it through the magazine. By the time the game came out though, I was deployed overseas...discovered asian women, and promptly forgot about this new fangled thing called MMO's for several months

I personally don't like WoW. But with that out of the way, WoW is an extremely polished game, and the Devs have a lot of foresight. There's nothing wrong with liking it, though I have to admit that I have "WoW bashed" with the best of them, but I think thats mostly out of frustration because WoW killed a lot of other games. It brought in a TON of people to what was a niche video game market, and made it mainstream. But the fact that it accomplished this buried a lot of existing games, and to this day effects the development of new games. No one is going to come out of the gate and stomp WoW into the ground. They have TONS of polished content, and they can simply mimic anything that is good enough to threaten them with an expansion. Where a new game will have their "new unique" spin on things, WoW has several years of polished content and can quickly add their imitation of any "innovations" into the game, negating the impact of the cool new shinies in other games. For example: RvR: WoW is slowly adding elements of this into their game. LOTR style instances, where you can go back to an area you already leveled through, but it is changed in appearance and what not due to the story line, but will be original to someone leveling through the area the first time. WoW took these things, along with a multitude of others and simply added it to their bloated monster. They will be King until people finally burn out for good on the IP, which could be quite a long time.

Heh, yeah they kinda did to the genre what Sex pistols did to punk musik. My opinion is that Wow is not a bad game but somewhat overrated. It doesn't deserve 20 times the players of any other game, it is not 20 times better even if the polish is good. |

I'd love to play a game other than WoW that would become my main MMORPG, but why pay for a new game that's almost the same as WoW? Also, don't forget that just because people play WoW, it doesn't mean that's the ONLY MMORPG they play. I play a couple of others as well, but more for the change of scenery than anything else. |

Exactly! People think WoW is "unbeatable", but it's not. I play WoW, and I like it. But I also play CoH and Lord of the Rings. WoW isn't the end-all be-all. It's just that it has a good "feel" and a good pacing for new players. But ultimately, the thing that makes WoW better, yes better, is the polish. Everybody prefers a polished game. And non-"gamers" aren't going to be as tolerant of a new mmos lack of polish and growing-pains, as someone who has been in a few betas and is some kind of EverQuest vet. The potential is there for another game to truly compete along-side WoW. The companies just have to be willing to put the work in and release a game that would probably be equal to month 3 or 4 of a 2008 release. It may not be "fair", that another mmo company has to do more work at the start, I'm sure WoW had its own problems at launch; but right now any mmo that comes out is going to be compared to the pinnacle in the industry. New games need spot-on polish, plain and simple. If your stuff isn't ready to go, it will fail in this market. People aren't gonna pay $15 a month for what's basically a beta-test. WAR and AoC probably would have been better received if they came out 8 years ago, but now that there is WoW the customers have gotten comfortable with a more finished-looking product. Loved Everquest for all of its faults. I was there from the start. I was never in one of those elite snobby guilds where you needed a whole job resume to join but had a lot of fun none the less. I sometimes think i quit too early since i haven't found that high in any game since. And i have tried them all.
Those were the days when Buffs had meaning and made a huge impact. the only other two games that made a great emphasis on buffs were DaoC and VG. We need more of that |
