Hello people

I've played WoW since...March/April 2008, so coming up for 1 year. But now, after levelling a Paladin to Lv80, and numerous other characters to the 60-70's, WoW is starting to feel a bit...old. End-Game content for me wasn't all it was cracked up to be and the only thing to do is: Farm gold, 'Heroic' dungeons, Raids and 'daily' quests. Daily quests aren't that interesting for me, Heroics get very repetetive(sp?), farming gold is well...kind of boring and Raids can only really be done if you have alot of time.

I've also been a roleplaying kind of person, and you can only really role-play in WoW if you find a good guild, which on most 'RP' servers are hard to come by.

So i'm thinking about cancelling my WoW subscription for a LotrO one. I've heard good things about LotrO and from what i've gathered, the community is much friendlier. Also from reading the LotrO forums, i've come to the descision that role-playing is much better and stronger than the odd spot of it you receive in WoW.

Do you think it's worth it, to leave WoW for LotrO? How's the combat and levelling speeds? Are the quests good and worth it? How is the end-game content? How are the proffesions/trade-skills?

Also I will probably try the free trial to get a taster of the game, which will obviously greatly influence my final descision.

Thanks for any help

List of what I want: (More may be added)

Good community.  Good Role-playing.  Good Quests/Levelling.  Nice combat system. Nice end-game content. Good proffesions. Not Boring!

While its impossible to say if its "worth" leaving a game for another but its always worth to try the trial if you are curiuose of a game :)

Seem like LotrO will fit you so I think you should give it a try. The combat can feel a bit slow and sluggish if you are coming from WoW but you will probably get used to it. If you want to RP choose the Landroval server if you are in US or Laurelin if you are in EU.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Great Community ... Great RP (opportunity at least, not everyone participates - but lore is there to back this up MUCH more than WoW, IMO) ... Good quests / leveling - I think the quests in this game are top notch - take the time to read them, they give you a much better sense of things going on in the world...  Nice combat system:  pretty much the same as WoW - little slower - same type of mechanics though - I like it - each class has different features that make it interesting to play. End Game might be dissapointing you to you - not much raiding - some smaller instances - Moria is HUGE and worth just exploring the whole place - if you are just starting it will take you a while to get up to end game, by then there may be more - but this isnt an "end-game" type game, if you know what i mean - the enjoyment comes from the journey - not the end.

I left WoW about 2 years ago - havent regretted it at all since - although i still do miss Charge on my warrior - best move ever.

Thanks

I will wait until Friday for the trial, because Monday-Thursday i'm quite busy. I'll take the advice for the RP servers and get a (hopefully) nice experience of LotrO :)

Also i was never really into Raiding and more into small groups, so LotrO sounds good yet again, and yes Charge was a cool move :p

I would suggest Landroval as well.  Nice population and it is the unofficial RP server.  I've played WoW on and off since the end of beta.  I finally quit for good last summer.  I bought the LOTRO lifetime sub when it launched just because I thought it was a great offer.  I leveled a few different toons to the 20 level range and ended up going back to WoW for some reason.  When I did finally decide to check out LOTRO again, I wished I hadn't left.  The community is so much different.  The quest are actually worthwhile to read.  It was almost like a breathe of fresh air.

I will state one thing though.  The free trial seems to have plagued the Advice channel with "Barrens" style chat.  I'm sure it will calm down and go back to it's intended use in time.

Thanks Cernan, i'll definately check that server out, and try to ignore the Barrens-style chat as best I can

I left WoW for LOTRO last week myself.  After leveling to 80 WoW had nothing left for me.  I don't do raids and PVP is only interesting for about an hour.  I thought I'd give LOTRO another try, haven't played since Dec 07.  It's come a long way since then!  So much more polished and so much more to do.  It's too bad my characters were wiped.

Did you create a new account when you came back? I find it sort of hard to believe that characters from Dec 07 would have been wiped. There's been no news of a character wipe since the game launched.

You should give the trial a spin.  I am not typically attracted to pve games, playing war as my main mmo at the moment, but the quests and graphics are so nice in this game, that even as a non pve player i was really impressed by this game.

Ha!  I figured it out.  Wrong server.  My old toon is on Gladden, for some reason I was fixated on Brandywine (i guess because that was the Beta server).  Now I got two alts on separate servers

Always worth a try but I do not see a major difference here. They both play pretty much the same. The only difference is that Lotro has better graphics and pvmp.

Apologies to the OP for any derail here but that's because both are fantasy based DIKU games. Most MMORPG's are level based DIKU design. Degree of polish, art style and secondary features are all the really seperate game such as LoTRO, EQII, AoC, nad Vanguard. At the core level they are all the same.

Myself I loved EQII and LOTRO but the graphic style of WoW just never appealed. I say give the free trial a shot. You may liek it you may hate it but you won't know till you try it.

I miss DAoC

Pacman is worth leaving WoW for..heh, nah. Lotro is good if you like your lore in mmo's as it apparently leak lore out of every freaking orifice it got Else it's a pve grinder aka WoW, just not with the retarded cartoon look.

I liked the battle grounds alot more than monster play but other than that I thought LoTRO was just more of the same but with different lore....... The UI feels the same and LoTRO is even more quest driven (yeah i know hard to believe) than WoW.......If youre bored with WOW and need a change then go for it but I doubt LoTRO will be a long eterm solution for ya.

LOTRO has a great atmosphere and i really like the scenery.

As for professions, the thing that really got me was that anything you make is usually of better quality than what most of the drops are... at least for the first 20 or so levels... i had a lot of fun being a weaponsmith.

Itinerant MMO player.

A comment on the quest system in LotRO that is different from WoW: there is an epic storyline separated into books that you can participate in. Some of these quests are instanced (either soloable or group-based) and the instances quite often play like a movie.

The lore is more prevalent and obvious in LotRO than in WoW because it is a game based on the books. Most of your actions are woven into the Tolkeinesque world. For example, quite a few of the item name's are related to the Tolkeinesque mythology (influenced heavily by Anglo-Saxon mythology and folklore), the deeds and traits are all related as well to your character and how people might perceive it in the game world. That's why you end up with deeds related to the overall storyline and world view, and you get traits with names like Empathy, Loyalty, etc instead of Improved Vitality.

Though LotRO has solo elements in it, it has a lot of fellowship elements as well, and Turbine seems to encourage people to play in fellowships for a lot of the interesting content. Don't be afraid to call out for groups and/or form your own, people are pretty friendly from what I've seen though some people take themselves far too seriously too.

Back in EvE. Started with BatMUD. Main MMOs have been EvE and DAoC.

I wholeheartedly agree with the atmosphere. The scenery reminds of an upgraded version of EQ. Or more to the point a 'realistic' as opposed to a highly stylistic with WoW.

To comment on gear, the made items are often better than drops or quest items. I estimate 90% of my armor is mastery made (think critical success). Other slots such as jewelry or weapons are quest items with a few made items. My high amount of armor mastery items could be just sheer amount of armor slots compared to weapon slots.

But another fun aspect is dropped items often look very good. I tend to keep dropped items if they look well with other items. That leads to the appearance tabs. You can have two sets of gear for appearance. How it works is that you drag an item to the appropriate slot, and now it's only for cosmetic purposes. Then you can sell/destroy the item if you want. Also you can control if certain parts show, like shoulder armor or cloaks. Or even feet if you are of the hobbit variety and prefer to go barefoot. I don't as they will wear boots if necessary like going out in to the mud or wading in pools of blood. (Yes this is in lore as I have been rereading the books again).

There is one more point. The lore. I highly recommend to read The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. It enhances the journey. When I was reading The Hobbit, there was mention about a hobbit that killed a goblin by basically playing golf. The goblin head was the golf ball btw. And in Bywater in the Shire, there is a statue of a hobbit about to wack the head off a goblin. That's detail and lore for you. My hats off to Turbine for inferring so much lore out of the books and making a wonderful world.

Enjoy the trial.
