Ultima Online will shut down entirely before WoW even begins shutting down and merging servers. I totally expect a WoW sequel someday, and in between a graphics expansion to further milk what is there. I don't expect their next MMO to be anything like the gameplay of current MMO's, I'd expect it to cash in on FPS or some other genre, but not neccessiarily a space or sci-fi game. Don't forget that WoW someday may have an expansion similar to SWG's Jump To Lightspeed, as the inhabitants of Azeroth understand their place in the universe and maybe decide to explore it. It wouldn't shock me if they added Eve and SWG elements in the future(dumbed down versions obviously) since they've pretty much completed their dumbed down DAoC cloning process. |

For several days now, I've been unable to find an open group in Northrend that's not for the level 80's. The expansion was too easy and solo-oriented, and many folks just blitzed through it. There's not a whole lot left to do other than raid Naxx endlessly. And Blizzard's own VP said that someday a game would come along and "cannibalize" WOW's player base, so it might as well be themselves doing so. WOW will not last forever, fantasy is uber-popular, so it only makes sense to follow WOW with a better fantasy MMO to catch the bailing players. Following the dying WOW with an off-genre would be a big risk. But we shall see; they have to announce the new MMO someday. hopefully this year.

Yea I am going to agree with everyone else in this thread... for Blizzard to bring down WoW because they don't want it to compete with their new MMO would be a very stupid and unrealistic decision. Blizzard knows there aren't just 12million people playing MMO's in the world, they want a game that will take the players from the rest of the games and bring them to their new MMO. But I do think that if they make it for casuals, and its decent, it will steal a lot of players from WoW because of people wanting something new. I loved WoW back in the day before Burning Crusade.. they started making it way to easy to level and get gear so its not fun anymore. Maybe if they make this new MMO for hardcore players I will go back to being a Blizzarombie. "Da bigger da Orc, da stronger da Orc. Da stronger da Orc, da more dat's Orc's da boss. No wonder da Black Orcs is always da bosses!" |

If you had a gold mine that's churning out millions upon millions every month would you close it just because you found a new gold mine? Neither will Blizzard.

Why the hell would they shut down WoW if it were still going strong then?
Blizzard doesn't care if you're paying your sub on WoW or their next MMO, long as you're still paying it to them. The only thing they may miss out on is more onetime boxsales (a lot of people don't play 2 MMO's at the same time) but even then it's possible they get a lot of box sales from people who try, don't like it, and then go back to WoW. (assuming it's still going strong)
And even then they can offer a slightly enhanced fee for access to both MMO's.
There's no good reason to shut down WoW at all :)

I think its funny that someone would actually think about this as a real possiblilty, why would a company create an addon to the already leading mmorpg, then close it 6 months later. The game is lively and there are lots of lvls running around, yes there is a lot of lvl 80's but there were a lot of 70's, and then a lot of 60's, obviously people are going to rush through 10 levels its not that long. If they made the cap from 80 to 160 i would expect them to take ages to get there lol. But no there is no way Blizzard would ever close the many servers full of paying customers so they hope that they will go to thier new mmorpg. No company would take that risk as they know the customers will compare it to WoW and not all would bother buying a new game and starting from 1 on a completley different game. If this was the case wouldn't Sony of shut down EQ, SWG etc, because there are newer ones they own? |
