I wonder if it could work. The reason I came to think of it was because of quests, where you go to do something that seems final, just to see someone else doing it when you're done.

Are NPC's really that important?

I'd like to see games that woould be more player driven, where the developers would leave it up to the players to form the lore if any, the history the true community, the laws and the society.

I'd like to be able to decide where a land should be prepared for a city, to vote for a commander or support a king that would be a player. Not some stale NPC's that does nothing, sitting on a throne, or invisible for the players, who's suppose to be in charge.

To have players form the society and choose their leaders without NPC's and developers standing in the way, without any unchangeable factions.

The only thing permanent would be basic nature like mountains, rivers, deserts, oceans  et.c.

I think it would be interesting to have a living society, that would form according to the players, and that would be changeable by the players.

Asheron's Call 2 tried that already. It failed.

I would prefer a mmo with human npc.  If one side is overpowered they switch side etc.

I havent played that game but it looks like it had a set lore?

i'd like to play a game where the devs only provide the landscape, and everything else is left to players

A Tale in the Desert isn't that far from what you describe.  There are a few buildings that kind of fill the role of NPCs, but no real NPCs.  It might be quite far from what you mean, though, as it has no combat.

A simple truth-"What people want and what is good for an mmo is not always the same thing"-mrw0lf

Isn't there already a game like that called Second Life?

I'm developing a game right now that will pretty much be player driven, there shall only be a few  NPC's in the entire world. Maybe like 5-10.

but does it have combat? I'd like to see some FFA PvP too, so that game mechanics wouldn't stabd in the way of players forming norms and laws themselves.

I guess I'm trying to describe a sandbox game of sorts, where the players have more to say.

A Tale in the Desert takes the idea of a sandbox a lot further than most games that you probably think of as sandbox games.  As for PvP, oh yes, there's plenty of it.  It's just not combat.

Sound frustrating, and extremely boring.

If you want players to be able to craft the best items in the game, and be able to put them up at auction houses, and player to offer the best prices for items that are gathered, or loot drops off of mobs, that's fine.

If you expect me to sit around scratching my bum becuase there's no one online to sell me something I need, or buy something I need to get rid of, no thanks.

Underlight had no NPCs.  The lore was pretty vague and the Guilds filled in the blanks (mostly with speculation).  Was one of the first MMOs but it was poorly managed and thus doomed to relative obscurity, though it's interesting to think about how the MMO market might be different if a game like Underlight became the baseline instead of EQ.

I remember in AC2 the towns were like ghost towns. It was spooky. Players were out questing/fighting or at a higher level cities I guess.

When I play a mmo I want to see "life" in the cities even if its just npcs.

It could work, but you have to give players a reason for populating towns

For instance being able to play or fulfill a merchant role in towns and setup your own shops and such, would work I imagine.

Their would have to be alot of non-combat things to progress and play in.

Puzzle Pirates has a lot of NPCs.  Some wander towns for you to duel them for practice.  Some you fight against on the open sea.  Some come aboard your ship as crew if you have few players.  That doesn't fit a "no NPCs" description.

Wakfu won't have any npcs, or at least that's what I've heard. The game is atm in beta.

A nice outside the box idea, a hugh challenge for developers, unfortunaly a far to great of challenge for the common gamer, as such a game would or could only be played by those with understanding of patients and knowing to put some effort into it even if it's "just a game" keep in mind gamers don't play this genre like jobs, those who are new or have a limited playstyle will play games in this genre like jobs. There for the majority will NOT understand a concept like this because of their fear of the unknown, and perhaps they will think or feel that it will become some sort of second life, because of their limited playstyle aswell having a very limited imagination.

But good idea even though I feel it might not work, how bad I would want it to work.
