SWG is an utter failure.  Talk about a waste of game.  I'm a huge SW fan and SWG was known for years and years as the game that killed star wars by most of the people I know.  None of us liked it.

Who the hell wants to be the heroic entertainer in a bar....nobody know.

Who wants to enjoy the fantasy life of Aunt Beru...

The doctor class had to buy money to make freakin medicines....talk about broken POS.

If they take TOR and make it completely unlike SWG I could not be happier.  I want the game to be fun. Nothing about SWG was fun.   I could care less about this sandbox concept.  Some people whine about that like it's more important than having fun.  Gimme a break, you have your opinion, just like I have mine.  My opinion says yours sux.  Doesn't make yours or mine better.  Deal with it.

How about waiting until the game comes out and THEN giving your opinion on whether it sux or is great.

wow....just wow.

Stop blaming the sandbox concept for SOE's failure to make a game feel like Star Wars. The opened ended sandbox games hav proven time and time again to be real good like with games such as GTA or Fallout.

SWG sucked because it had no content.

wow just wow is right. swg was a great game just because you couldnt figure out its mechanics and how to actualy play it doesnt give you a reason to bash it. everything you described about swg sounded nothing like it.

 Sandbox games rock!

Don't blame Lucas arts and SoE for their failures. I'd be sad if it's WoW in space with lightsabers we're getting.

your absolutely right, and to top it off it didnt have anywhere near enough Star Wars Content. i never did a damn thing that i ever read in a book or saw in a movie.... never! lets review

1. never saw my family get killed, which drove me to pick a side( rebel or imprial)

2. never learned about the force, never learned about the alliance or the imperial history

3. never did any pvp that changed the game world or had any effect on the planets i lived on.

4. never worked on abilities i had to make them stronger, instead i spent day after day hunting dewbacks and big girrafe looking monsters

5. never did anything epic at all( that was the only thing i liked about NGE, the fact that finally added heroism into a star wars game.

I could keep going but im at work. My main thing to say is that SWg was a good game, but it was never in any version a good Star Wars game!

no content and broken POS. Raph said SWG was intended to be a sandbox built on top of quests like current games ( I can give you the quote link if you want), just SOE launched it unfinished and spent more time doing bug fixes that never fixed anything. They didn't know how to fix anything because the building of the game was poorly documented.

for most SWG was a piece of garbage, the people who liked it either ....

a) knew no better

b) were rabid Star Wars fans

c) the things they found to actually do was enough for them regardless of bugs. (this was me)

SOE knew this and used the carrot on a stick tactic and promises of  regular content additions, which they tried to get off the ground twice and just gave up. People started giving up on SOE and left once WoW came out.

Aye

Those that wanna play a sim style probably did like it.

Problem being that Star Wars is about adventure...which just so happens to be the most popular gaming style in MMOs. Should of been a natural on how to build SWG....instead Koster went Sim.

Hopefully Bioware gets it right, and we dont catch a glimpse of Uncle Owen, out in the field tilling, in his crusty pink panties.

Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

It sucked because the developers went from a very buggy release to making major changes to the game through the NGE and CU upgrades. Just take a look at how the subscriptions were affected after each upgrade. It had plenty of promise and content (as well as content that could have been added) but instead of fixing the game they made major changes that should have just constituted a new game.

The sandbox junkies totally highjacked my thread.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't mind TOR being like WoW with lightsabers for one simple reason.  WoW was fun.  I had a blast the first 2 years.  Got sick of it after that but hey, if SWTOR can occupy me for 2 years then hell yes I wanna play it just exactly like wow.

That's the thing the sandbox junkies don't get...your games are NOT fun.  SWG sucked.  Everquest was fun ONLY because there was NOTHING else to do.

I don't want a game that feels like work.  I have a full time job, I want the game to be fun from the start.  I want to be able to have fun if I only have 1 hour to play.  I want it to be fun if I have 12 hours to play.  WoW did this and succeeded so yes I hope it's used as an example.  Bioware would be really stupid not to.

So have many other games and they haven't succeeded. Comparing a game to WoW is a potential death sentence. It's time for something that departs enough from all the current mmos. They've already talked about having that “open world feel" they have even talked about using some of aspects of what they call "The elder's game of SWG" (They call it the elders game for some reason) So I'm not sure what you're on about but more than likely it will feel like many MMOs, with some aspects you never expected.

Can you honestly tell me you wouldn't want to have a place to call your own in a game? You want to just mash buttons all day for 12 hours straight, get “stuff”, then log out that's it, and this is the only fun you seek? Well I hate to break it to you but they have stated over and over again the game will have something in it for everyone, and that means SWG fans, and you.

It's fine you want to talk about what you would like to see in the game, but when you come in here telling everybody else what they would like to see is dumb, lame, didn't work ect, won’t be in the game (you know little about) you can expect people to highjack your thread. Everyone wants something different in TOR, rather then trying to run off people why don't actually have an open and honest discussion. If it’s not honest discussion you seek why did you post this? Spam forum is up there^ under General Discussion.

this game will be another AoC.  Those who like WoW will play this for a month or two and go back to WoW.  Those who like(d) SWG will play it for a month and go back to SWG (or WoW/EvE/etc).

It will do decently, but fail to meet it's expectations much like SWG.  Then it will get changed, and people will get mad and it will be like SWG all over again.

SWG was good in it's origional state, it was completely free-form and you wern't forced to do anything, you could be purely a crafted if you wanted.  Thats something thats lacking from new MMOs.

It seems like they are going to make TOR competition for WOW, which is a mistake really.  If it doesn't match wow in quality or content it will fail, just like AOC did.

Trying to bury wow at their own game is suicide, they should do something origional.  Even the star wars badge won't save it, because most TOR players are going to be old SWG ones and they arn't fooled by it anymore.

This I sincerely doubt. Let me explain...

On one hand we have Funcom, a company who is known for terrible game releases and deceiving their own customers.

On the other hand we have Bioware, one of the most respected and loved game development studios of them all. This company is known for quality releases that push the limits of every genre they release a game in... sorta like... umm... Blizzard.

The two companies are nothing alike and neither are the games. Age of Conan was extremely oriented towards PvP and, at least at release, had VERY little to offer in the way of PvE experience (especially for the raiding crowd). Bioware is known for exceptional story-driven RPG content and I have little doubt that this will be a major focus in this game.

One of the reasons I think AOC and WAR are not as successful as was expected is the PvP focus. I personally LOVE pvp and have played both games extensively, but when you look at the MMORPG player-base as a whole, you find that the vast majority of players are more interested in the PvE aspect of the MMOs they play. I think this is one of the reasons why WoW is as ridiculously successful as it is... vast detail and effort was put into their PvE content.

From my understanding of TOR, this game will be extremely focused on PvE with some good PvP content thrown in... very much like WOW. This fact, plus the tremendous quality of every Bioware game I have played, makes me think that this game will be very successful.

Yeah okay.

The failure of SWG had nothing to do with sandbox and everything to do with a company that was in way over its head. Had the game been complete with less bugs and more content it would have been the class of the MMO industry.

But since it decided to chase WOW and change everything to conform to that easy going playstyle, it became an utter failure. If WOW clones were the wave of the future then SWG wouldn't be struggling to keep 10 k subscriptions.

MMOs played:SWG,NGE,Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online,Eve, Star Wars the Old Republic.
Favorite MMO: Star Wars the Old Republic
Least Favorite MMO: NGE

Reply to the OP:

If you don't like sanbox, and you don't want to be a character in the cantina, and you don't want to be a moisture farmer, you should love the new SWG.  I don't really understand where you're coming from.

SOE did it's best to remove all of these elements from the game, and replace it with a badly bugged FPS game.  They deleted most of the game's professions, emptied the cantina's, and allowed everyone to become a jedi at login.  From your comments, it seems that you would love this game.

It also seems like SOE was listening to people like you when they changed the game out from under all of the current players.  You seem like the new target audience.  Maybe you should try it out before you comment...
