Notice, I didn't say when people say "me" instead of "I".  Certainly not.  Saying, "Him and me went to Vegas last week," shows that you aren't even trying to pay attention to grammar.  But when someone says, "Yesterday afternoon the president gave a medal to he and I," the speaker is trying to be impressively correct but instead makes all the linguophiles cringe. 

 

I always say you and I, it sounds better and it is correct.

Ahem...  the word "I" is not always correct.  If you say, "Hey look!  Someone gave I a pencil!"  That is pretty silly.  Try these:

I felt like the TV commercial was talking right to I.

Oh no!  The train is going to hit I!

Belive I, it was no joke.

These are all very silly sounding, but for some reason when there's a compound object (adding "him" or "her" or "they" to the word "me") people decide the right word is "I" without exception.

If the word "me" sounds right by itself, then the word "me" should be there even if some other word is with it.  For example:

I posted about my pet peeve, and so did hvc801, but someone flamed him and me. (correct)

I posted about my pet peeve, but someone flamed me.  (also correct)

Look how it works if you do it the wrong way:

That jerk just reported I!  (obviously wrong)

That jerk just reported he and I!  (also wrong!)
