The game is 9 years old, but it is fun as hell.  The community is great. The graphics are not.  There is no other game where you can tank 40 mobs at once.  There is no other game where you can run 100 miles an hour for hours and hours and not hit a zone wall.  BTW you can train your run skill so your character runs 100 miles an hours.  That's pretty damn cool.  You can train your jump skill where you can jump over rooftops. That's pretty damn cool.  AC is a skill based game so you can create a character that is fully self sufficient.  There is absolutley no reason to group, but people group all the time.  That says something about the game and it's players.

There is consentual pvp on all servers except Darktide. That is pvp full time.  The pvp in AC is more fun than any other game i have tried.   Partially because everyone is running faster than a speeding bullet and leaping over tall buildings in a single bound.  Also because war spells and fire arrows don't home in on you.  You can see it coming and step out of the way!

There are 100s of dungeons to explore and 100s of quests to complete.  Asheron's Call is an epic game.  If you are unhappy with the current state of MMOs, come play an old one with a little more bite.

BTW play Harvestgain server if you are gonna give it a try.  We love new players.

Has the magic system changed? I remember trying this game years and years ago and I hated the whole "component" trial and error type magic thing.

AC1 was one of the best MMO's ever made..

It was FAR better than EQ1..  the problem is it came out after EQ1 so it got lost in EQ1's shadow...

magic system has been updated.  It is very simple now.

yes you can manually dodge war spells and missle weapons.

A warning tho, Darktide is a hard server to play on if you don't know your way around.  Try Harvestgain first.  In DT there is nothing to stop a level 275 guy from killing your level 5 newb and taking his loot.  The players there actually enjoy doing that.  Since you leave equipment on your corpse when you die, death becomes more than a little annoying.

Asheron's Call is the best. I highly recommend it. Its for sure a grind game, but there is a ton to do otherwise, especially if you haven't played in a few years. I split my time between WoW and AC, and I enjoy the both of them. Very different games, though.

I never saw AC as a grind, even though it really was.  You had to grind a lot of mobs to level, but it didn't really feel like a grind because of their XP system.  Instead of having to wait forever to get a level and make your character better, you were -always- improving your character by spending XP on your skills/attributes.  It also felt like less of a grind because instead of killing x things for a piece of armor at the end of a quest, you'd be getting XP the whole time while you were just searching for a good piece of loot.  Sometimes, you'd come out with a bag full of just great items.

Leveling never really felt like a desperate thing to do like in other games.  In others it's just a race to the top where all the content is, but AC has some really great content from start to finish, and they're -still- doing monthly updates adding more content.  While the glory days are in the past, the PvP is still addictive and challenging.  Player skill actually comes into play because of the ability to dodge spells/arrows.  There is more to it, but that's the basic idea.  

Really, try this game.  If Turbine would merge the servers (screw the housing.. give players a couple months to get their things packed up on other characters and then give them a deed to a house)  it would make the game feel like the old days again, with just a couple really nicely populated servers.  It might even bring some old players back.  I certainly would play again.

 I havent played this game is many years but it was and still is the best MMORPG EVER!!!

Asherons Call has things that new "Next Gen MMORPGS" are boasting about!

Customize your character yourself there are no real classes.  

Dodge bullets! (I mean magic and arrows)

whoa. i downloaded this and tried it (was only about 700megs). eeeck i thought Everquest was painfully outdated. Im glad you guys like this but I can not play such a game. I admit I have become spoiled i guess by modern graphics and intuitive controls neither of which i found present in AC.

I love the game, but at this point they should really make this free to play.

They should make pre-Dark Majest (the original AC) free to play. The original AC includes levels 1 through 126, NO housing, NO access to ML, and NO access to anything added in Throne of Destiny. Then there should be premium accounts for $12.95 a month that give access to everything.

I would love to play again but it just won’t work on my xps dell. I got in touch with support and they told me I have to mess a round with ports or something.
Even an old game like EQ1 and UO work ok.
