This thread is based on www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/217994 which in detail discuss an significant increase in AoC gaming over the last month. Yesterday the merge was perfectly completed and it is expected that this trend only will increase. Just out of interest lets complete a poll over why AoC seem to again appeal to the masses, after all as many people have pointed out over the last half year it is not normal for a MMO to gain activity again in the way AoC have done.

TAKE THE POLL AND THEN WRITE SOME CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS

Why are everybody getting back into AoC?

The dramatically increased stability
People have upgraded hardware
The added content in form of Revamped dungeons
The added content in form of PvP consequence/levels and armors
The added content in form of increased itemization
The added content in form of new quests and Ymirs pass
The general increased smoothness of the game
The way bugs have been squashed over the last Quarter
The anticipation of DX10 and the 3 new dungeons
The improvements that has been done to Sieges.

Well for me it was simply just that I have read a lot of good things about AoC lately. Getting into the game I absolutely love it. Out of the comments however about the game, it was the PvP coonsequence system that appealed most to me.

You need some more options on the voting board...

For me, I've decided to give it another try now that the merges are complete.  For me, I left the game because my particular server was a ghost town.  WIth more people crammed into a smaller space, I hope the world will feel more lively.

I would also add it was Xmas time. And people had free time over vacation to try or return to AoC.

In the end, why ask why :P

I play AoC .. but I must agree.

I mean "so many" part is just unnecessary.

Question should be more like : Why did you came back to AoC + with options like Dont plan to come back and Still waiting for more improvements to come back.

Some fanbois are AoC worst nightmare as you are over promoting the game as hell ... funcom is slowly getting game better and better yes but lets be honest game is far from ready when it comes to variety of things you can do, crafting is borked, itemization & stats are ... etc...

AoC Players should really try more to promote features and fixes that was added then claming how good game is selling and how many people are coming back -> whoever quit AoC is NOT interested in it -> whats was fixed and added is important.

I enjoy my time in AoC as do quite a lot of other players, however there are still a lot of issues(mainly: crafting, itemization, end game content ).

I cannot answer, as there were so many reasons.

I have not had fun in many other MMO's

I like the stability now

I love the combat

The merges has renewed interest (and to see Global Chat this morning, and how it was abuzz with great conversation was awesome)

DX10 coming...

and more.

So, is there an "All of the above"?

Come on man, I just made another Poll. Could you answer the one that was most important to you...*sigh*

Or not promote it at all, FC / AoC got itself a reputation for dishonesty in over-hyping and over-marketing. The hard sell by the 'Fanbois' comes across as a continuation of the same, and sadly is not helping FC who seems to be trying hard to turn around that image around.

When FC really feels the game is where it should have been at launch they will fire up their  'Welcome Back' campaign they have planned. And if the product is any good it will sell itself.

The Fanbois tryin their hand at used Car sales tactics / Infomercial marketing are just shooting FC in the foot at this point and certainly not doing the game any favors.

Perhaps because, at its core, AOC was fun and had some good ideas and now that quality is improving, its worth trying again?

I started at lauch, and hung around for 3 months roughly.

I stopped because everyone was leaving. I had two guilds empty out, the cities were deserted, I played on a pvp server, but had no fear of dying, there was no one around.

I only got up to the mid-50's on one of characters, and mid-30's on the other. At the time content for 50-80 was admittedly spartan, and I didn't look forward to weeks of solo grinding, so I went back to EVE.

They've fixed a lot of this from what I read, so I'll bet AOC is much more playable now.

Believe it or not...I agree with this.

The only way Funcom can prove ANYTHING is to offer the come back deal...simple really.

People can make up their own minds, and the poll should have been worded differently as well.

Overall, yes, the game has improved. But, no one else will believe ANY one posting here. Seeing is believing.

I went back again, and I am having a blast, so, the only way for people to REALLY know how the game is...just play it.

Stop with the adverts people.

Come on, this is not advertising for christ sake. I have typically posted a lot on AoC population in the past.. Because it interests me, and I honestly thought it would be usefull to get some comments on why people now seem to came back. Why all this flaming? Give the POLL a shot folks, even though you might not agree with me.

I went back because I was trying to find something to play...  yet for all its fixes and new stability it still felt on rails and soulless (to me).  No doubt the game looks fantastic and has solid controls and UI but it was a wasted month of subscription for me.  Good luck to the players and devs, its just not for me unfortunately.

Everyone's getting back into AOC because of its great collision detection.

Some people are so far behind in the race that they actually think they are leading. This "poll" looks like its made by comical Ali himself. Funcom - I want my money back, and I want your advertisers of this board.

Any new or returning player to WOW, send me a PM for some help getting started.

1/14/09 3:12:34 PM#23

I came back because it cost me $2. and it allowed me to see that nothing has really changed.  The populations are not growing.  Even after they reduced it to 18 servers, there are still 10 servers that have almost no population and the 'good' servers still are not having multi-instances like they did the first month.

It's all smoke and mirrors.. game is just as bad at launch.. the only thing that has changed in the past month is now that people only have to pay $2 to find out.

I was cleaning out my e-mail when I saw a buddy key Funcom sent me forever ago. So I sent it to myself (I am my best frienemy) and set up a new account.

3 days in and I'm having fun, which if I recall is merely a symptom of Tortage Syndrome interacting with my altoholism.

As to the underlying "Why?": plain and simple boredom.

I'll level one of my toons out of Tortage to see if anything has actually changed in the wider world, and then most likely cancel the trial account before the 7 days are up.

How can you sit there and say populations are not growing after less than 24 hrs after the servers have merged?

You Can't. You can't speak for all servers. EU hasn't even happened properly yet LOL.

You have no idea, and you say you came back for $2 and the game is still the same with 3 hrs playtime - Doesn't get you anywhere in game - let alone to where the content has been added in or any PVP levels or to see crafting changes etc etc.

Too freakin funny. With the blanket statements there mate.

Btw I don't believe you tried the game again. Screen shot to prove me wrong. Thanks.
