The genre is fragmenting. We've got your basic themepark game, like WAR, WoW, LotRO, EQ2, DAoC, etc. Then there's your sandbox games like SWG pre-NGE, EVE, Ryzom, and so on. Then there's your MMO FPS, a genre I'm not particularly intereted in. A first person shooter, only massive! big deal. |

Well, if Diablo is an RPG, and FF7 is also an RPG, the genre is not that specific to me. |

Sorry, i'm not so great with english, so my wording was poor. I wasn't calling you guys idiots who are Debating and such, I mean the people who are like "This game sucks because it's lots of grinding" for example, that's stating a fact that isn't nessicarily true. People should say "I think", not it does, because they have no right to say that. The point being is, I think there should be themes like "Theme Park" "Sandbox" "FPS" and maybe even more, clearly labeled so the people who don't like that theme will know to stay away from that theme, and not insult those who do like that theme. I wasn't calling anyone an idiot, or "Porks", I said "What the pork", not "What a pork". I just don't like seeing people state Opinion as if it's fact. |

Oh, and while I have your attention, why are we capitalizing the word "Genre"? ____________________________________________ |

Hmmm... To be honest, I disagree how you are approaching the matter, calling people idiots for having differences and a variety of opinions. I know everyone does not agree and share the same feelings about certain games, but I don't think there is anything wrong with their mentality. Everyone is different and each of us have different likes and dislikes when it comes to our MMORPGs. Furthermore, I do feel that you raise a valid point in what you are saying about categorizing MMORPGs into different sub genres. But, to what extent do you plan to narrow each one down to it's proper category? Are you refering to the type of setting, environment, and world it takes place in? Such categories as Sci-fi, Fantasy, Post Apocalyptic, etc. Or are you refering to the actual gameplay? Such as Themepark, Sandbox, etc. Or maybe you want to categorize it by the developers and what civilization it is based at? Whether it be American, Japanese, European, and so on. The fact of the matter is this, no matter what type of genre or sub category you try to classify each and every MMORPG in, they are all just what they are... MMORPGs. Hence, that is the reason for this site, MMORPG.com. Even if you did categorized each and every single detail about them, it will not somehow magically take away the differences people share about the game. There will still be debates, arguements, and conflicts. What are considered pros to one person maybe considered cons to another. But try not to look at it in a negative way. Many times, listening and sharing our views, we may learn things about a MMORPG that we really didn't know before. True, there will always be stubborn people who their only purpose here is to prove you wrong. Just try not to let them get to you, and realize that not everyone here shares that same purpose. At the end of the day, what matters the most is if you really enjoy the MMORPG you are playing. It does not matter what anyone else thinks about the game because you enjoy playing it. And that my friend, is what it is all about. MMORPGs are here for our enjoyment. Don't let anyone else tell you different. Take care and good luck to you!

While I agree there is far too much negative ranting here the Op’s premise is on very dodgy ground. On the basis of the OP’s reasoning we are not to think something is rubbish if one person thinks it is good. Who am I to say a game, idea, book, film etc is crap? This means every religion and political party is right. Every game, film and book is good; at least the author is going to think so, even if no one else does. Sorry, I left playschool a long time ago, everything is not good, life is full of mediocrity and there are some darn stinkers out there. |

Always fun to discuss facts and opinion. Every fact you get you get it from someone which means it is potentially an opinion. Since MMOs as a subject isn't actually science there will always be something of the person itself reflecting upon the statement made. "This is just my opinion" is a pityful way to devaluate your own assessment of the game you talk about as if it was a matter of taste like "I prefer strawberry over raspberry". The value of fora like this web-site is to establish what is quality and worth noticing and what is just another brick in the wall when it comes to MMOs. Discussions, reviews, various expressions of experience from gameplay etc. make out what is a top rate game and what is not. There will be difference of opinion since we are not discussing rocks dropping to the ground. The discussion about the games and the MMO-genre is the facts about the games at any time. Some opinions are privat expressions of one persons feelings about a game other opinions contribute to bring forward the facts about the game. The latter will virtually never be done by one person alone though one can be the first to discover some original valuable thought about a specific game or the MMOs in general. |
