Hello,
I quit WoW some time ago, and never purchased WotLK. I remember reading they were going to add siege weapons, an open PvP area, and defendable buildings or some such. It definetly caught my attention, but, after having been disapointed at the open battlles of the sandlol, Halaa, and the three towers of E Plagues, I wasn't really expecting much. I'm curious how it turned out. I skimmed the WoW boards quickly, but didn't see much, if anything.
Thanks in advance. |

Without turning this post into a WAR/WOW flamefest, can you be a little more specific?

Well LWG is a proper a zone that is dedicated to just sieging, so it has castles, towers etc, and siege vehicles, for you to use to cap and kill people. The new BG is a siege like bg, so it has siege wepaons and towers and forts etc, which you defend and attck, same like lwg. It is alot of fun. |

I played the Strand of the Ancients BG for the first time since WotlK shipped the other day, as I'm not a fan of PvP, but it was really a lot of fun. The siege engines add a whole new element to the gameplay, along with the gun turrets and a destructible environment. I haven't attempted LWG yet as - I have to be honest - I didn't have a clue what the hell was going on. From a non-PvP'ers perspective though, it does seem like a total change from the Battlegrounds of old. And one for the better. |

Wintergrasp is a full zone, similar in size to most of the zones in Azeroth. There is a Fort at the top of the map that has destructable walls and destructable towers. Inside the fort are 2 'machine shops' that make seige weapons for the defenders. There are also cannons situated around the walls that players can use. The cannons are destructable also though. Basically players on defense (inside the fort) will man either the cannons on the walls, or they will make vehicles. There will also be a few bands of players that go on 'offensive defense'.... they go outside the fort and try and destroy the other teams 'vehicle workshops'. Once the offensive team breaks down the walls (they have to actually burst through two layers of walls) then there is just a massive battle in the courtyard. The objective of the offense is to break down a final door. The team on offense also has vehicle workshops that make vehicles, or they can attack the Fort directly on foot. My server is basically a 'medium' size server and our Lake Wintergrasp battles are usually about 100v 100. The battle lasts 30 mins at most. If the defenders hold for 30 mins, they keep control. Once the battle is decided, the winning team has control of the zone Controlling the zone means 1. Any instance you do you get a special drop from every boss mob The winning side controls the zone for 90 mins, then the battle starts again. at the current time, the offense has the advantage. I've only seen the defenders 'defend' a few times. They are adding some strength to the walls in the next patch, which should balane it out. I kinda like it the way it is now though since it's hard for one side to dominate. They control, we control, they control etc. If you are an ex-wow player and want to come back. Scroll of Rez gives 7 free days, boost a character to 80 a realm and faction change. Send me PM for an invite. Only 1 per day available |

So battles last no more than 30 minutes, then you have control for 90 minutes. The opposition then comes in and takes the keep for say 30 more minutes, and there is typically very little defense. You then have another 90 minute wait before you can attack again. Seems like more waiting than fighting.
Ahh well, thanks for the answers. |

Additionally, besides the shards and raid, when you have wintergrasp, you have access to a special mob that drops eternal shards at a high rate. This makes it very attractive to people who are farming PvE gear. However, since it's a PvP zone and you're PvP flagged, farming them is risky and exciting (I've been dominated doing that by a rogue a few times, but it is VERY good drop rates). No. the zone is always a PvP zone and is open to enter (open world PvP). The Keep fights are around 35 minutes. Within those 35 minutes you need to control the fortress (by breaching its walls) and "enter" the last hall. The castle consist of multiple layers of walls and inner spaces (3 layers). Both the attacker and the defender can make 3 kind of tanks, catapults or flamethrowers depending on the casualties you make. The fortress has also extra canons. The big tank can have a passenger that is also a gunner, the other vehicules are controlled solo. AFTER the fight the fortress is repaired and the winner has now 2.5 hours the time to profit from this victory. World buffs mean: extra shards in all dungeons and the possibility to raid a boss which resides in the castle (drops rated PvP gear - very hard to obtain). ---------------------- The zone is world PvP, in that all over the zone small PvP battles can rage on (with proper daily awards), mostly by killing the other faction. So the battle IN the zone never stops because players get rewarded with daily quests, but the Keep fight is only every 2.5 hours. I think there are 5 daily quests total (also professions are there like mining etc...). A few minutes before the 2.5 hours end, there is a City call to arms in Dalaran. At that moment a portal is opened for the guys wanting to fight. The skirmishers rage on all day long, because of the daily quests that give extra rewards. Even these skirmishers are narrowed into the SE and SW of the map, The castle lays in the North end of the map. On our server more and more people play it, and in the weekend there were even MORE than 100/100 (multiple 40 men raids at both sides). A typical evening would see Keep fights at 6.00PM, 9PM, 12.00 PM. Between the castle fights, you have in the conquered Keep a raid (choice 10 or 25) and in the rest of the zone you always have skirmishers to get rewards for beating up players (daily). The zone - Blizz says - is about as big as Westfall. The Keep itself is very big. ALL PvP is automatically on when you enter the world zone. No flying allowed. |
