The folks at Ryzom have announced a new pricing scheme for the game which offers lower prices and a new 12 month payment option.

Dear Players and Homins,

Well, 2008 was surely a roller coaster ride for the game of Ryzom, so many turns of events for our beloved game.
The Ryzom team would like to thank you for all your help and support in keeping the Ryzom Community alive and well over this period.
It is with great pleasure that we wish you all a happy new year for 2009 and extend to you and your families the very best of health, happiness, love and prosperity for the year ahead.
What more could you wish for? Maybe more free play on Ryzom I hear you ask? Well we have listened and for the month of January you will still be able to enjoy playing the game of Ryzom for free.
As you will be aware Ryzom cannot develop and prosper as a "free to play" game forever, and therefore we have released Ryzom's New Pricing structure as follows. I am sure you will be pleased with the new prices.

Read more here.

Not a retired MMORPG.com mod

It's a 5 year old game. I want a fresh server start. Are you listening?

I have no problem for them to start charging for the game, except that I want to know something where that money is going.  If they are going to milk the existing playerbase and not add new things then forget it.

Perhaps they can use that money to add content and make the game enjoyable...

Only 10 bucks a month? wow not bad for a decent MMO imo.

Now that they have the patcher working Ill hold off on the payments until I see the first content patch.

great news though, im very happy to see Ryzom get out of that F2p mmo category.

Why would I play a pathetic MMO when I could enjoy a masterpiece like Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Dragon Age?

Make a WORLD,
Not a Game.

I think they should charge what it's worth... nothing.

I find it a little odd that they start charging now? I mean the game has been around a long time, wouldn't it be more logical to start as a P2P and then go to F2P after 5 years instead?

10 bucks isn't so much money but the competition for P2P games are a lot tougher, will be intresting to see if they will keep most of their players or not.

Anyways, Good luck Ryzom.

The previous two owners have gone into bankrupcy. This company, whoever they are, have saved the game from death and decided to allow people to play it for free whilst they worked on sorting out what was apparently a mess.

Now that that is complete, they're ready to start developing for it. For that, they need money. I think it's a great price for an excellent game. It's what many people on this site are looking for but don't realise exists.

i haven't really agreed with you on the fresh server start but i certainly am leaning in that direction

the economy in this game is just plain dead as the "elders" don't need dappers(money) so they don't make stuff to sell on the market for us newer players - few people if any sell materials on the market and there are even fewer people that buy them

i have tried to buy new armor and weapons - nothing but crappy NPC stuff

as a pretty new player myself i've bought an apartment, all 3 packers you are allowed to have and a mount (twice, as i uhm, lost one once) - still have a couple million dappers which seem to be pointless now

no longer sure about paying to play

a bit of an aside here - funny for me

i've never had a problem logging into this game - now that they've announced pay to play the server is down

i know there is a patch tomorrow that will bring the servers down but it just seems a bit - odd

They told me I'd never survive, but survive was my middle name.

This is the only way this game will survive.

Playing: Age of Conan, Aion: Tower of Eternity.

Waiting For: Guild Wars 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer

Pretty much, good call on offering competitive pricing. Something that a lot of games with shortcommings failed to do in the past.

Ryzom didn't work for me and I wouldn't pay to play it under any circumstances but I wish them best of luck.

I usually don't agree on new servers, I actually think all games should have one server like Eve.

We all know that isnt realistic and since the elders in Ryzom have the game and OPs on complete and utter lockdown Im actually all for a new server.

Once these devs increase the games content, change the way you skill up crafting so ur not a rich bastard that vendors everything, then maybe a new server would be a good idea.

Right now the game has almost no economy, if ur a new player you can't get any kind of gear cause the elders don't need dappers, you actually have to rely on them to give you stuff like a charity case.

This is broken imo.

Hell maybe a total progress wipe would be better? a revamp of a few systems cause right now it doesn't work. No new guild is going to get started and take a OP in this game or craft the best stuff without elders help and thats not how a MMO should work.

Anyway I would like a new server to experience some of the events that the older players went through in the timeline. its kinda crappy that we can see that stuff.

Anyway atm ryzom is a decent game but more of a wait and see for me.

Indeed its the only way it will survive but I really cant see many people subscribing to the game unless they fully relaunch it with advertisements and get cheap boxes in stores etc.

Barely anyone knows that the game exists other than avid MMO fans.

I think this is great news!

It's pretty obvious to me that Ryzom has been, and will always be, a niche MMO... but now it's going to be a successful niche MMO with income!   Seems a lot of the posters on the Ryzom boards are going to resub.  I will too.

Sure, there are shortcomings... show me an MMO that doesn't have shortcomings!  But for me, nothing can beat Ryzom... yet...

It was $9.99 a month before. Didn't save it then, won't save it now. Either get on the ball and put real content in the game to go along with the sandbox elements, and do it quickly, or watch the game tumble again.

That's exactly what they're doing. They patched the game for the first time in ages today. They fixed some bugs, re-enabled a few features and made it more cheat-proof. Clearly they aren't out to milk the playerbase as players only start paying from next month.

Next will come the real content, as they mentioned on their forums.

Good prices, but what is this going to change to the game ?  New contents ?  They did'nt say anything except that the game could'nt survive forever for  free.... we already knew that.

They have stated they will start developing new content for it now.

Very nice price, but who solves the "Monthly Fee" entry in the game list ?
