You are only posting half the story. Retail, the box is still $31.99. The people selling it for $2 are generally indie game shops who have to get rid of their stock before taxes are calculated. Does this mean AoC is doing "great" or the same as it was at launch - NO. But what it does mean is that you can't say the game will go F2P just based of the fact that you can pick up a copy for $2.
Amazon.com sells it for $30, and it is currently at like #1500 on their sales chart. Saying the retail box is $31 is misleading, because nobody is buying it at that price. Play.com has it for $15, but it takes about 2 mins to find it for less than $2. like you said.. at this point retailers are just trying to get rid of their stock..... which makes it highly unlikely they are going to be ording more boxes. Once you are no longer recieving order from retailers, it would really be smart for Funcom to offer the game as a free download, and then try and get subscriptions after the free month. Which is probably what is coming in the next month. Free client download with free month for new players, and a free month for returning players and then try and hold on to subscribers. If you are an ex-wow player and want to come back. Scroll of Rez gives 7 free days, boost a character to 80 a realm and faction change. Send me PM for an invite. Only 1 per day available |

Interesting to see 645 US players on Xfire yesterday. The day before it was >800 players for EU. All together it will make Xfire player numbers about 1400 for this weekend. Would not be surprised if we see AoC up there on #39 or # 40 by end of the weekend. |

This is a post from the AOC forum about Xfire "Installed it for one purpose only, to try and bump AoC up on the Xfire ranking" Pretty soon Famine will be making a post and some player will give a link to where you can download xfire. But there is one problem. Funcom estimated that 150K subs was needed just to be in balance budgetwise. And considering they have a large debt if they don't make money of AoC it puts the future of Funcom at risk, as their financial report specified that future Funcom profits depended on AoC subscriptions. Funcom also said that should AoC have 100K subs it would be deemed a failed project.

I think this is a last ditch by Funcom :/ |

#45 and gameing is up 16% (5513/4758) since last friday, also number of players are up with like 14% (1279/1120). Very fun to see that many players getting back into the game. Also, was playing on fresh start server yesterday and population is picking very nicely up. Looking on these numbers I would expect close to or over 7000 gaming hours and over 1300 Xplayers tomorrow. That will make AoC #39 on that damn Xfire list. |

The game is not void of high level contant as you both have several end game group instances and several raid dungeons, in addition to the epic instances of normal zones. Thats not void. In addition, the new lvl 80 solo and lvl 80 group dungeon was opened on testlive this weekend, so in a couple of weeks there will be even more. |

Originally posted by finnishguy Yep. That pretty much sums it up. And of course, as of this thread... An increase of 2 spots = "trend showing subs are increasing" Classic double-standard OrionMan logic, right in line with how he denounced XFire as a legitimate way to gauge the game's popularity when the numbers don't look good for AoC. He then does a complete 180 and touts them as proof of the game doing better when they go up a bit. The hypocrisy and obnoxiously blatant display of intellectual dishonesty around this game some of its fans (not all) has always been noteworthy. I see some of the usual suspects are still at it.

For what it is worth the XFire hours are 400 more between last Saturday and this one. Could be the server merges, and people taking another look see Could be the low new low price, hey for less than 10 bucks US cant be beat Could be the XFire threads on the forums and fanbois starting to use it to artificialy bum the numbers Most likly all the above Whatever the reason at least the trend is upward not downward. What I keep asking myselfr though, is the game interesting enough to retain those customers for several months? For me it isn't. Not that I think there is anything terrible wrong with the game, just for me there was not enough to do and all my gaming buddies are busy playing another game that also happens to be very very good and offers me more for my time. |

Xfire fell drastically on Saturday because Funcom wasn't in the office running xfire on all it's machines :) JK... but yeah, I agree it is a combination of all the things you said. Add in that warhammer is hitting some rough spots so with the server mergers and nearly free 30 days, there are probably a lot of people checking out aoc. If you are an ex-wow player and want to come back. Scroll of Rez gives 7 free days, boost a character to 80 a realm and faction change. Send me PM for an invite. Only 1 per day available |

Question is where will it be in March? Could be back down in the 2- 3K range or maybe up into the 7 to 8K range. Time will tell. |

lol. AoC has more than 6100 Xfire gaming hours, something the game have not had since end October or Beginning of November. I fail to see how this somehow is bad news. Also the no. of Xfire players are +9% compared to last Saturday. Very good news. And another thing that I just became aware of. These numbers are with some downtime on the EU servers. Will probably see that on todays numbers also. |

The next few months will determine whether the game is a Eve and recover and maintain a decent population or a Vanguard and continue a slow spiral to obscurity. |
